In the case of the Wii U version, if Nintendo is not planning on providing a suitable platform for online gaming... they shouldn't even bother in releasing the console. And I am not a huge fan of online gaming...
Do OK for a while, Then people will realize that [s]SonicTeam[/s] Square Isn't updating anything, the game is full of hacks and cheaters and did I mention no Updates?
The slow exodus from the game will start and it will eventually implode on itself leaving behind a super hardcore fanbase. A fanbase that will never be offered a game that will fill the void. Instead being offered several crap spinoffs that don't do quite as well as the first game and implode themselves.
Eventually (see decades later) leading to a game that is surprisingly similar to the first game that they knew and loved?
Prognostication FTW!
Now? Fuck it. I don't care anymore. Japan - or at least Square - doesn't respect itself any longer and doing this to Dragon Quest just proves it.
And now, The Question: are Square-Enix the new Ubisoft?
entire game can be played offline, but some parts require online connection. no permanent connection is needed since you can simply either play with NPCs or human players. it's simillar to Monster Hunter where you will have some missions exclusively for multiplayer
I hope they really consider whether fees fit the game or not. I don't this game to be a free to play free for all for dlc, but I'd like it if they'd consider dropping the fees for everyone outside of Japan. Dragon Quest would be even more unpopular/niche if they tried to charge us.
MMO's have become the new "we cant think of anything new to do with our IP, so lets milk this series for more money by making it an MMO" thing to do.
make it an MMO. everyone likes paying more for games now thanks to internet connections and DLC. so they will be willing to follow their favorite series as a pointless ,go no where MMO, now with a subscription fee.
But this goal is impossible because a scientific double-blind study has proved that forfty percent of people don't "role-play" in MMO's, instead they act like anus's, so how can the classical charm and feeling of immersion in DQ be preserved in this format?
Really, though, is Dragon Quest a series that you want to turn into an MMO? It had such a rich history of thoughtful and meaningful singleplayer quests, but I guess everything has to come to an end.
