Dragon Quest V pirates: get ready for a long boat ride photo

The piracy of Nintendo DS titles has making headlines lately, so it's no surprise that game makers are doing their best to thwart the piracy of their own titles in whatever way possible. Of course, their efforts to block copying are usually defeated by the piracy community fairly quickly after release. It's like a game within a game!

This time around, Square Enix tried to block flash cart usage by making the opening sequence of Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride loop infinitely. If pirated, after the game boots, the player can only watch a never-ending boat ride. According to Nintendo World Report, Square Enix confirmed that this was a copy protection mechanism.

Of course, modders have already found a way around this boat ride, and a modified ROM dump is out and about... if you roll like that.

Modders always seem to be one step ahead of these copy protection mechanisms, makes me wonder when squeenix will finally have a failproof method.

There will never be a failproof method. The end. See joystiq, they tried it and look where it got them (spoiler: fail).

Honestly, they should go with Stardock and stop wasting resources on piracy prevention. Attack a few romsites once a year, but, other than that, maintain focus on making games and selling them. They'll never defeat the piracy community. All they do is piss-off legitimate buyers and waste resources.

Not only that, but they got rid of the beta english that was found in the japanese version of DQIV.

They're onto us.

This doesn't surprise me at all. Everything that publishers and developers do to deter piracy is all for naught. Within thirty minutes of finding out the feeble attempts at stopping these guys, there's already a work around. Awesome.

Copy protection might have made some sense years ago, but in the days on the Net it's really useless.

@Professor Pew: what about Joystiq?

As long as there are games, pirates shall try and make them free. But hey, at least their efforts give us something to talk about.

On that picture... you're doing it wrong.

Eh, when nintendo gets over the money printing and starts making stuff that holds attention for more than 5 minutes maybe people will stop pirating.

@ DGX Goggles: Right, cause only Nintendo has piracy problems.

The information age will never relent. Yar!

Heh, in any case I doubt I have time to ever get to this game anytime soon. If I were in to the series like I am Castlevania though, you'd see me buying it. Even though its not that rare to see a JRPG translation rerelease compared to a 2D release, I'd still support it.

It seems like Square has some new piracy protection with every DS game they release. Seriously, FF:CC: Rings of Fate, The World Ends With You, FFIV (actually, I'm not sure about this one but some slot-2 users seemed to have huge problems with it).
