The piracy of Nintendo DS titles has making headlines lately, so it's no surprise that game makers are doing their best to thwart the piracy of their own titles in whatever way possible. Of course, their efforts to block copying are usually defeated by the piracy community fairly quickly after release. It's like a game within a game!
This time around, Square Enix tried to block flash cart usage by making the opening sequence of Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride loop infinitely. If pirated, after the game boots, the player can only watch a never-ending boat ride. According to Nintendo World Report, Square Enix confirmed that this was a copy protection mechanism.
Of course, modders have already found a way around this boat ride, and a modified ROM dump is out and about... if you roll like that.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
They're onto us.
maybe it's me, but I actually like wastin money on my DS. PSP on the other hand....
@Professor Pew: what about Joystiq?
Eh, when nintendo gets over the money printing and starts making stuff that holds attention for more than 5 minutes maybe people will stop pirating.

Nice Boat.
Heh, in any case I doubt I have time to ever get to this game anytime soon. If I were in to the series like I am Castlevania though, you'd see me buying it. Even though its not that rare to see a JRPG translation rerelease compared to a 2D release, I'd still support it.
