Dragon Quest IX only has one save slot: Everyone PANIC! photo

Here's a bit of odd news for you. Usually, you can expect three save slots for almost every DS game out there, but it's become apparent that Square Enix's Dragon Quest IX will only allow you to have one at any given time. Now that's hardcore.

The intel comes courtesy of Dragon Quest IX's back cover, which was leaked online recently. In the bottom right hand corner is a warning that says "Only one save game can be created." Certainly unusual stuff, and should make the game even tougher and create a real sense of urgency in the player's choice.

Latter day DQ games are known for being challenging and limiting the player, so in some ways I am not surprised by this news. However, this also essentially means that friends cannot share the cartridge, with only one player able to use it at any given time.

Something tells me that Square Enix isn't worried about that little fact in the slightest, though.

Why would you want friends to share your cartridge? It has multiplayer. Let them screw around on your file, make sure they don't save and then tell them to go buy it and play it with you! It's not like Dragon Quest games have vast choices that sculpt that landscape or anything. You can almost always go back for whatever items you missed (unless a town gets destroyed).

It'd be pretty stupid to whine about this.

And it sucks (not the game, the fact that you can only save once).

That's so that you can't exploit it to clone Pokemon.

Options are good. Not a deal breaker by any means, but this definitely kills it for anyone that, say, has a little brother and usually shares carts because of multiple save slots.

Also similarly, for example, my mom and dad would probably be interested in playing this (If their kids are thoughtful enough to get them a DS before it comes out). In this case, they'd have to buy separate carts. That's a kind of jerk move, getting a retired couple to buy two carts to enjoy the game together.

Cave Story had one slot. It would have been helpful to put in a few more instead of forcing the user to keep multiple copies of the program.

This sucks pretty hard if the game, like basically every other RPG in the world, has moments which can't be revisited or secrets that you get one chance at finding or they're gone for good.

I know I always have a backup save (usually alternating between the two) in case something stupid happens.

It makes perfect sense in Pokemon (as you could have an infinite supply of every Pokemon for trading if there were multiple saves), but it doesn't make much sense for any other standard RPG.

There are adapters that can transfer savegames from DS carts to the PC. I used one to copy my save from TWEWY so a friend could start from scratch.

Ill just go ahead and state the obvious... This is what happens when you put games that belong on the PSP on the DS. Oh well good thing Im not buying it, I like having a million saves when I play RPGs.

So what happens when 50 hours into the game you get stuck in a dungeon with no potions and half your party dead and you're pretty much stuck? You restart the whole game?

Yeah thats totally CHALLENGING! /eye roll

Eh, I'll manage. Provided IX doesn't force you to choose between a spoiled bitch with a dynamite bod and two less important girls as marriage prospects.

Aside from the occasional game lending to my girlfriend, I only ever use one save slot anyway. If I recall correctly, the Phoenix Wright series of games only has one save file as well.

Forgive me if im mistaken, but don't all of the Dragon Quest games return you to you to a town with half your gold if you die?

I use all the slots in RPG games... might be a challenge to have just one save.

@Genius

Not that I _want_ to take the bait, but it's not a technical restriction caused by the DS hardware.

One save is plenty. It's when games come out with zero that you need to worry.

@ tgammet:

If you die, you wake up at the last church you visited. That situation doesn't exist in DQ games.

I always keep back saves of JRPG games because of missable items or under leveled characters. This kinda sucks. But with the way the game is going with Multi-player I can understand.

DQ Has always had three slots and you can't save different savefiles for one game so the "Sense of urgency" has always been there I guess. That's the DQ Way. If you miss something or ruin something, that's it for you.
