Being a European means my ability to play Dragon Quest games have always been rather limited. However, we Brits did manage to get our hands on Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King and all I can say is that it was pretty bloody challenging. If anybody felt that was too hard, however, they better run for the hills -- DQIX is going to be even tougher.
"We make the game to be quite hard," says series creator Yuji Horii. "It's harder than any of the previous titles, and the enemies are also powerful ... We strengthened the bosses, stuff like that."
Apparently, part of the reason for the high difficulty is to offset the fact that gamers can look up things on the Internet these days, which seems to be accepted as a part of the gameplay experience. I guess the thinking here is that a hard boss is hard, no matter what you look at on the Internet.
I don't mind this news, but the DSi is certainly more frail than a game controller. Please don't make me throw it, Square Enix!

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
I'm talking about my penis.
Maybe I grinded more than I realized or more than most people, but the only hard part of the game was the post game bosses which were pretty ridiculous and could only be beaten with SIGNIFICANT grindage.
Damn Metal Slimes and their RETARDGAY evasion rate...
In all seriousness, I kinda wish RPGs didn't force level grinding on you. Sure, it's a bit fun to stretch for that next level. You get that feeling of accomplishment, but after awhile, it just gets way too tedious. Why can't they just level scale the way FFVIII did?
