Dragon Quest IX gets torn apart, Square Enix shrugs it off photo

You'd think the Dragon Quest series could do no wrong, but despite DQIX's ridiculously huge Japanese success, there are haters. Japanese consumers have been ripping the game a new arsehole on Amazon, despising the game's character customization, cutscenes, costume changes and female character Sandy. Square Enix boss Yoichi Wada, however, doesn't really care. To him, this is just another day online.

"Because it's the internet, well, that's the Internet for ya," shrugs Wada. "We were telling the game creators 'Don't worry about that. Regarding likes and dislikes, there are good opinions and bad opinions."

By all accounts, Dragon Quest IX seems to be actually quite good, and there could just be a few hundred morons upset over some little things and going on a rampage. We'll have to wait and get our own hands on it to see. If we don't like it, however, Square Enix better not come knocking on our door over a bad review. It's just the Internet!

SquareEnix has balls, unlike most of their characters.

Well, if you can't get past that horrible art-style, then more power to you. Personally I didn't care for the previous one in the series.

Let these be customers praising the game and I'm sure he'll sing a different tune.

Good job Square-Enix... completely ignore your consumers.

So tell me, when is Square-Soft coming back?

There's actually an interesting write up about this in GamesTM this month from their Japanese Correspondent Tim Rogers regarding how some of the more obsessive otaku responds to things that happen with their favourite franchise. One thing he mentioned was a story of a comic fan who burned their stack of comics because the author mentioned the 'pure' female character had a boyfriends and lost her virginity prior to the start of the story line (creepy).

But more topically he writes; "However, it [Dragon Quest IX] scored just two stars overall on Amazon.co.jp with a brain-numbing number of one-star votes that all spill the same story.; they hate the tanned girl fairy character, and wish it was on PS3. Japan's biggest internet community, 2ch.net contains a 94,000-post 'anti-Dragon Quest IX' thread where bored people [...] have organised 'trolling efforts".

He also states that he himself thinks the game is damn good, if not perfect, and it scored the full 40/40 from Famitsu. 94,000 posts is an insane quantity.

When you get an avitar.

But all's good, this was in responce to 2ch being a bunch of pricks, so basicly this is the equivnat of teling 4chan where they sit in the great scale of things.

The funniest part is that people think the guy in the pic is posing, like at a photoshoot.
He's just watching TV. The drool must mean he's watching a reality show.

The game is actually really pretty, as I have just started to play it. I cant say anything about this tanned character but its stupid to bitch out over 1 character in my opinion.

The same thing happened with Final Fantasy XII. DQ and FF have some very conservative fans.

Completely ignoring their customers, huh? Square just might be the "Epic Games" of Japan. It will be cemented in truth if they start banning people from their forums for reporting bugs.

Jim Sterling lately has been making quite a point of putting at least something slightly controversial in every one of his posts that aren't designed completely to start fights.

More reason why Square-enix should stop thinking they know best with their mediocre 360/PC games and constant remakes.
Granted they put a lot of quality into the remakes but I haven't seen a truly great, truly original game from them in ages!

Hopefully their partnership with a western company (Eidos) will bear interesting fruit.

I truly dislike Square Enix but like with the recent lawsuit I have to find myself agreeing with them. These people are probably Dragon Quest haters who got bored or "hardcore" fans who dislike any minor change in the series. I'm just hoping they don't make it end up like Sonic where they have so many different opinions on what's working and what's not they try to please everyone and fail.

HE'S NOT FAST ENOUGH! HE'S TOO FAST! 2D FTW 3D SUX! EWW 2D GO BACK TO 3D! GET RID OF HUMANS! GET RID OF EVERYONE BUT SONIC, TAILS AND KNUCKLES! GET RID OF TAILS AND KNUCKLES! WTF YOU GOT RID OF MY FAV CHARACTERS! NEEDS MOAR OVERWORLD! NEEDS LESS OVERWORLD! EGGMAN SHOULD BE THE ONLY VILLIAN! WAIT ONLY EGGMAN WTF GUYS! EWW BEASTIALITY!

And many more useless complaints have screwed up the entire series to the point where you think with so many games in so little time they're just throwing the games out there to see what will hit or miss. We can complain that Square Enix aren't listening to people but maybe they would listen if people simply stopped making dumbass complaints. Nothing good ever comes from messing with the designer's orginal concept.

He makes a good point. People are always looking for something to be angry about, especially when it's a popular video game franchise like DQ. I played an imported version from Japan, and although I didn't get very far because it was all in Japanses, I really liked it.

Didn't DQ9 get a perfect score on Famitsu? Yeah, there are japanese trolls too. Although I do agree that it should be on PS3.

Usually, DQ fans are traditional. Some have been playing only one game on each generation of consoles. And that game, you can be pretty sure it was a Dragon Quest.
When your fanbase is comprised of people between twelve and fifty year olds: you can be sure some part of it is going to be mad when it sees any kind of change in the series.

It's mostly just PS3 fanboys rating it down like a Halo video on GameTrailers. You'd think they'd have gotten over it by now.
