Dragon Quest IX becomes best selling game in the world photo

During the third quarter, Dragon Quest IX not only managed to be the best selling DS game in the world, but the best selling game, period. When you consider the fact that the RPG has not even been been sold outside of Japan yet, that is an immense accomplishment.

Between July and September, Square Enix's handheld romp sold an impressive 3.93 million copies, single-handedly giving the Japanese market a huge boost. It defeated Wii Sports Resort and its 3.0 million, as well as Pokemon Heartgold/SoulSilver with 2.1 million.

The top five global sales for Q3 are as follows:

1. Dragon Quest IX: 3,925,000
2. Wii Sports Resort: 3,014,000
3. Madden NFL 10: 2,612,000
4. Pokemon Heartgold/Soulsilver: 2,068,000
5. Halo 3: ODST: 1,847,000

So yeah, Dragon Quest IX deserves major kudos for beating stiff competition while restricted to an ailing market. An undeniably amazing achievement.

I'm just amazed that Dragon Quest continues to be this behemoth title in Japan, even after all these years! Whatever it is that it does, it does it well.

My mom is planning to buy a DS to play this game. That's how much she likes this series!

If it were released on the PS3, 500,000 PS3s would have to be sold in Japan before it would even be possible to reach this number.

That's pretty impressive. I can't wait until it's released everywhere else and the number grows even larger and the line on the sales chart will match the joy in my pants.

Wow, but I'm not too surprised to be honest. While the DQ series has much less pull here in the West, the franchise is absolutely f*cking insanely popular in Japan. People falsely call in sick (keep in mind Japan is one of the most workaholic nations on the planet) just to buy it on launch day. If it wasn't going to be #1, it was going to be damn close.

This is a nice thing to hear but myself and many others who don't want to import are going to have to wait along to time for this game's western release. Dragon Quest and Yakuza are two of my all time favourite series but I'm not willing to play them unless I can get a English Sub.

but still, holy god damn ballsack on a cross. that is an achievement.

I'm usually not into RPGs, but if this thing gets a release in America/Europe and gets great reviews then I'll definitely try it out.

I'm a bit shocked that the DS stole a PS3 exclusive... guess S-E wasn't all that concerned with Blu-Ray's storage capacity.

I'm starting to wonder if this is the beginning of an exodus for S-E. Just imagine if Sony suddenly announced a platform shift for FF13... probably the same reaction from Americans that they're getting out of the Japanese with the DQ9 shift.

Also, for playing the game for it's realism... I know completely what you mean. As I was telling a talking blue animate slime yesterday, I love how the DQ series pulls from real life so much. I mean, that's exactly how much damage I do when I cast magical spells.
