Dragon Ball MMO coming to Japan in 2008 photo

DMV. DBZ. MMO. Capeesh? Ok, I'll slow things down a little. Over on Japanator, DMV found out that there's an MMO DBZ game in development for a 2008 release in Japan, and a beta testing session in Korea this summer:

The game is set 200 years from the end of the manga, so all the main characters are dead, or so it seems. The world has been divided by some evil organization, and with the help of “Time Patrol Trunks,” you’ll help to reunite the world.

In Dragon Ball Online you get to play as Saiyans, Humans, Nameks, and possibly other DBZ races, but the cool Molyneux twist is that you start playing as a young fighter, and grow to be an adult anime character. That's a lot of damn hero haircuts, Krillin clones might be a cheapest characters to play. Akira Toriyama has stopped playing Blue Dragon and now plans to help design the new characters, buildings, and backgrounds for this game.

I'm sure there's already an "over 9,000" population party being planned. Here's some scans from a magazine showing what we can expect so far. If I ever get a chance to play this I'll make a Hercule look alike and try to live up to Japan's generous name for the American character from the show: Mr. Satan.

DBZ sucks. Therefore, I can't imagine the MMO being too good.

Question: How many times will the "over 9,000" joke be used in reference to this?

Answer: OVER NINE THOUSAND!!!!!!

@MechaMonkey

Imagine how many peoiple will name themselves and guilds with that 9000 gag.

Worst part about it is that it never was funny. I could be the biggest DBZtard and not find it funny. Granted I watched one half of a DBZ episode my entire life but still, what was I supposed to be laughing at ?

can anyone please explain to me what the flying fuck was so hysterical about that 9000 gag?

That's actually a fairly fresh idea compared to most of the MMOs that are out and pretty open to change. I'm in.

For the same reason the Nintendo 64 kid is funny. The over-dramatic way Vegeta screams it. Over 9000?

I'm surprised they didn't think of this sooner honestly. At least it's from a different mold than WoW.

Also good to know Toriyama will be involved.

A long time ago this would have really made me excited. Anymore, it sounds cool, but I don't pay to play games. I just really hate that whole premise. I would love to have a cool DBZ game where I customize my character and go out on quests and stuff though..just not MMO style...it's getting really boring, really fast, in my opinion.

I really wish every RPG under the sun wasn't a MMO these days.

Im really getting bored with MMOs, partially because I never liked WoW(GASP, BLASHPEMY) and pretty much every MMO has the same battle system, which is retarded. Id much rather just talk to people on AIM for free while playing a game then pay each month to talk to people in an MMO with the loose premise of quests to do being the actual game(it isn't, the actual reason MMOs exist is to interact with other people, not play a game). That being said, the DBZ univers(along with the Star Wars universe) could be the best universe ever created for video games. Massive explosions, unlimited power, flight, crazy hair and outfits for multiple races, legends, easily compared "power levels"(in games this is also called "exp"). And the entire series is based upon the group of fighters getting stronger, and so there is a lot of equipment and such already thought up(weighted clothing, scouters, senzu beans). But, for some reason, most of the DBZ games are crap, despite all of the advantages I jsut laid out going for them(except for Budokai 3, that game is a pretty satisfying fighter). But my distaste for the "press 1 and wait for the enemy to die" or "sit in the back and cast shadow damage spells over and over until a big boss is dead" battle system keeps me from even thinking about trying this game.

@Nintendragon

I pretty much agree. Remember the old GBA DBZ games that were like Pokemon, and yet actually kinda good? Would be nice just to see a more Oblivion-esque RPG instead of pay-as-you-waste-away.

I actually knew what scene in the show everyone was referencing but that's the first time I've ever seen that video and damn, it actually had me laughing most of the way through. Probably because I'm so tired but still, good stuff.

The only reason i would play this is if it had an amazing PvP element (that is literally the only reason i play WoW) and for that, it may as well be a fighter. They should just make a DBZ fighter online!

Wonder how they're going to work saiyans into the timeline, seeing how its 200 years after the end of the manga.

One or two I could understand, staying dormant... but potentially OVER NINE THOUSAND? That just doesnt make sense.

@Rockso-Secret hideaway planet where a lot of them went, and have been for years, possibly by suppressing their children's power or by developing better techniques to hide their power level. Its easy to just make up crazy crap, and in that world its believable.

That video is absolutely RETARDED, but I couldn't help but laugh, maybe only because it was so bad, rather than because it was so good... maybe its both O.o

Can you imageing if the fighting system was based very much like the cartoon itself?

"You are powering up!"

3 days later

"You are powered up and ready to fight!"

3 minutes later

"Your Spirit Bomb has been Reflected back at you!"

3 minutes later

"You reflect Spirit Bomb at Gohanlin!"

2 hours later you're too tired to reflect any more.

"Spirit Bomb hits you for 500.000.000 damage. You die go do 10,000,000 pushups"

I can't imagine DBZ being the same as WoW. Takes healers, tanks and dps classes. Just dont see that happening in DBZ. I'd imagine it's way more pvp based (except for leveling your charater)
