Dragon Age: Origins invites you to Orzammar photo

As far as fantasy races go, I've never liked dwarves. It's not that I'm prejudiced or anything, I just find them more boring than your other fantasy stereotypes. I've always been one for the undead myself, but that's mainly because I grew up obsessed with the skeleton fight scene in Jason and the Argonauts, and now believe that anything involving skeletons is awesome.

None of that was really very relevant, so let me just inform you that BioWare has squirted us in the face with what it calls the "weekly blast" of Dragon Age: Origins content. This week's blast is all about the underground city of the Dwarves, Orzammar. If you're a fan of the stunted ones, then this will be the place for you.

Dragon Age: Origins is the first BioWare game that I've been truly excited for, and hopefully that anticipation pays off. It's looking like a really promising RPG, and I hope to get my hands on it soon. Meanwhile, check out the gallery for pictures of Orzammar in all its splendid subterreanean glory.

The Dwarven City of Orzammar? I can't wait until the later weeks when they reveal the Orc City of Ironblorge, the Elf City of Stormflind, and the Troll City of Darmassus.

Fact: Dwarves love Marilyn Manson and his song, "The New Shit."

This will be the first game I've played in a very long time where I am actually excited to play as a Dwarf. I'm going to design the most fugly looking Dwarf Commoner imaginable.

I have seen nothing that makes me want this RPG. Nothing at all.

I don't know, maybe it's me, but this one...just doesn't look like something I want to play. Maybe it's the "I've never play Baulder's Gate" thing....

Has anybody read the prequel book? Surprisingly good.

Stryffe:

Finally got round to finishing it tonight. I really liked it. A surprisingly good fantasy story, even as a standalone book.

Yeah... I've never selected dwarves or orcs... I've always chosen human or Elf form usually.

@Daxelman... Bioware has a really good reputation for creating excellent story and NPC's you come to care about. In the BG series there were optional romances (which they've said will be in Dragon Age:Origins as well). I still have fond memories of Anomen, my studly knightly boy toy... my romance partner in Baldur's Gate. I also loved Minsc and his pet Boo - they were great party members! :)
(it's just a deeper experience than games like Fallout3 or Oblivion)

Johnathan Ross wins. I thought the same thing.

It even kind of looks like Ironforge, but I guess that's to be expected. Dwarves and whatnot.

I'm kinda torn about this game. The fact that it's made by BioWare makes me pretty much expect it to be awesome, but from what I've seen it looks so unoriginal, and these screens really cement that idea for me, with this city looking like it could easily (like others have already said) be part of Ironforge in WoW. Seriously, just lower the polygon count and it would be impossible to tell the difference.

You've never played a Bioware game? Man, that sucks for you.

I really wish some of the other D&D properties would get some attention. Forgotten Realms and Ravenloft in particualr. I would instantly purchase games where I could play as Bruenor Battlehammer or Lord Soth if they were available on consoles.

I bought the prequel book, but Im waiting til a couple weeks before the game is released to read it. I checked out the demo of DA:O in front of the San Diego Comic Con last week, and I can say it looks pretty great. Looks so much better on PC though, and controls better too. I was impressed by what they could do with a 360 controller, but keyboard just has many more keys.
The world does look a bit "generic DnD" but so did Baldurs Gate and Neverwinter Nights, and those series were great. And a big part of the reason DA looks a bit generic is that so many games have copied the look of games like Baldurs Gate and Neverwinter Nights.
Some of you say parts of DA look like WoW. Thats like saying that Fleetwood Mac copied the Dixie Chicks when they sang "Landslide"
Or that every R&B and fuck musician of the 70s and 80s sounds like P Diddy.

Dragon Age isn't a D&D property. It's an original property of Bioware's, and it has more in common philosophically with the mature fantasy of George R. R. Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire" than the fairly straightforward heroic fantasy of D&D. Which is not a slight against D&D. I'm just saying that Bioware is trying to branch out on their own terms here.

Dragon Age isnt a DnD property, but much of what we see, when we see a DnD video game is Biowares vision, thats what I meant to say.

Oh...I don't know why I thought this game was related to D&D’s Dragonlance (which I don't really follow) series... “age” and “lance” aren’t really close (brain fart I guess) Oh well, it looks cool enough. I still wish Forgotten Realms and Ravenloft received more game translations. When I played Demon Stone on my Xbox, I flipped out when we were allowed to play as Drizzt Do'Urden and Bruenor's Gutbusters made a cameo. I don't mean to take away from Bioware's efforts to create their own characters; I just really like the stories written for 'Realms, ‘Loft, and D&D in general.

All fantasy has been built up on Tolkien's shoulders. I don't know why it's such a surprise to anyone.

@The Don

Yes and no.

Much in the same way we can say all 'Science fiction is built up on Robert Heinlein's shoulders' but we don't because while the 'traditional sci-fi' of marines, space bugs and space alien war can be credited to Heinlein we would be looking at science fiction in a very narrow way, right?

Typically when we say Tolkien-esque we refer to a decidedly European setting with aforementioned folklore of of that continent like Elves, Faires, Dwarves and Orcs.

A fantasy based on a very Eastern setting or an HP Lovecraft-esque Eldritch fantasy or even a French/Germanic Gothic fantasy that is devoid of any sort of magical creatures save for the celestial and demonic. We could go on, eh?

@ GameraTheGreat: totally agree with you on the need for more Ravenloft games. Although as people have said, Dragon Age is unrelated to D&D, D&D sure had some amazing worlds that developers should utilize if they can't come up with an original campaign of their own. I'm excited about Dragon Age because I love Bioware, but it looks soooo generic.

Was never that big a fan of Forgotten Realms as it had the typical Tolkien cliches but Ravenloft, Dark Sun and Dragonlance were SO awesome.

I suppose the setting is probably why I haven't paid much mind to this bit either... Jade Empire 2 plz. Still my favourite Bioware game, even if the game itself was eh. Just combine that setting with more interesting lewt to collect and maybe a better balanced combat setup and it'd be amazing.

Yeah, I really think Ravenloft and Forgotten Realms are unexplored goldmines for developers and movie/animation makers aswell. Dragon Age is a draw for me most def and I will be buying the game, but I think some of the generic feel has to do with developers not having much experience with material outside of Tolkein-esque fantasy.

Dwarf fortress made me love dwarves way too much. But that city doesn't have enough engravings of dimple cups and cheese on the wall to satisfy me now.
