Dragon Age: Origins DLC planned for the next two years photo

So yes, BioWare loves downloadable content. Not only will Dragon Age: Origins DLC be available on the game's launch date, the developer is also planning to further drain our bank accounts with content spanning the next two years.

"Yeah, we have plans that stretch out for basically two years," explains executive producer Mark Darrah. "And it's going to be everything from really small stuff like item packs up to larger quests that might last an hour or two up to even fully fledged expansion packs. Really it’s a broad long term support plan for the game."

Darrah also confirmed that the DLC will hit all platforms, except for anything related to the PC-only game creation toolset.

Dragon Age is looking like a contender for RPG of the year and is a game I am incredibly stoked for. I really do wonder how overboard they're going to go with the DLC, though. Hopefully there is some solid content that's worth the money, but two years of the stuff seems ridiculous. Anybody for horse armor?

Shit.

"larger quests that might last an hour or two "

Fallout 3 rocked these hard. As long as they're good, I'm in.

"up to even fully fledged expansion packs."

So...like Shivering Isles? I'll buy two copies, Dragon Age devs!

Don't you mean "EA loves downloadable content." Bioware didn't release any DLC until they were bought out by EA.

I have to say their releasing DLC on the day of release smacks of EA's influence, but maybe that's just me.

Hmmmm... I still don't know if I can deal with the combat in this game, I hope there is a demo, otherwise I'll be renting this.

As far as RPG of the year, it think it will have to face off against DEMON's SOULS for that honor. Man DsSs is kicking my arse, but I cannot stop playing it.

Honestly, on a lot of levels, what I've seen of Dragon Age has looked lackluster. I need either a huge gameplay blowout or a demo to perk my interest back up.

And in general, so long as a developer/publisher follows the Fallout 3/Oblivion DLC model, I'm in for it.

Really?!

Looks like we have another "we'll support L4D just like Team Fortress" bullshit statement, folks.

Better be worthwhile content if you're gonna stretch it out that far and make PC users wait a whole year when it was already done. Hopefully that extra year provided more polish and less bugs.

I'd rather pirate this and send 200 bucks to Bioware's private account. But, seeing as I don't know their account no, and even then they are a subsidiary of EA... I guess I'll just have to buy it and feed those leeches.

Well, Mass Effect didn't received a lot of DLC love, so are they trying to redeeming theirselves or just good ol' greed?

I'm all for real gameworld expansions that include new areas and quests. Microtransactions, on the other hand, can suck my ass.

Agreed. I remember in Sacred 2: Fallen Angel, there was a dlc where you could get this portable chest, so you could basically pick up as many items as you wanted. Thats bullshit. Make something thats gonna add extra ( And new ) gameplay to the game, not something thats supposed to make your time on it easier.
Also, you couldn't pause that game at all. Fuck that.

Sigh, if anyone remembers this is the exact same thing they said about Mass Effect. Why, we were all going to be swimming in massive DLC for Mass Effect that would expand the universe in interesting and unique ways. Two years later and we got Bring Down the Sky which is an obvious case of content originally cut then polished up and reinserted as DLC, and the glorified shooting gallery of the last one DLC pack. So I won't exactly hold my breath on this one Bioware.

Two years of DLC? well, I guess I'll wait till they've finished making the game before I buy it then.

@allisonaxe,

That's one of those things everybody says but it's a complete fallacy. The game is finished. It's playable from start to finish. The DLC is nothing but extras. If you're waiting 2 years for that, you're a fool.

You sure about that, though?

Fallout 3 had an obviously incomplete ending, and a laughable level cap of 20 (in comparison to their previous games' 80+). Sure enough, some months later, Broken Steel comes out and patches in the full game at a $10 fee. Allisonaxe could be not that far off the mark here.

Waiting a few years for the "Dragon Age: GOTY Edition" that includes $100+ of extra DLC is actually a really thrifty decision. Do you know for SURE that there won't be some sort of "Epilogue DLC" that will increase the level cap, and add an extra ending (no one does). I know all of the Fallout 3 hold-outs are pretty floored right now with their GOTY purchase.

The point is, it's all speculatory, but either of you could be right.

Note how I'm comparing Bethesda to Bioware/EA here, but hey, it could happen.

I'm going to check reviews before I buy a DLC. So complaining about things I'm not going to buy seems rather pointless.

Fallout 3 was a complete game by itself. I don't feel Broken Steel added that much in to the game to make it a requirement. Broken Steel felt like the other expansions. I could do them but they weren't necessary for me to feel the main storyline was complete.

My hope is that with this DLC it is like the Fallout 3 ones where it is more questlines / new areas to explore. Unlike the Fallout 3 ones I hope it feels more relevant to what occurs in the main game.

I'm just comparing Fallout 3 to every previous Bethesda game before it.

Elder Scrolls games have an ending that you can play after you beat the game (there's no cliffhanger cop-out as well).

Elder Scrolls games have a level cap four times the size of Fallout 3's. Fallout 3 really felt out of place upon completion until Broken Steel came out (which I love, by the way).

bioware did release dlc before they were EA. they actually promised more dlc before they were bought, but the opposite happened afterwards.

Xaliqen's suggestion that Bioware didn't release any DLC until they were bought out by EA is defnitely not true.

Neverwinter Nights had some of the most extensive free and paid DLC of any game out there.

Disclamer - I work for Bioware!
allisonaxe's Avatar - Comment posted on 10/14/2009 01:08

That is true, Kitae, and I'll admit that i bought NWN and its first expansion, and then I bought both platinum and diamond editions when I found them in the clearance bin (got a copy of diamond new for 4.86, if you'd believe that) I didn't pay for any DLC but the only thing diamond has over platinum edition is the lack of an instruction manual plus the Kingmaker paid dlc on the disc. but the difference between Neverwinter Nights, and its DLC, and something like Dragon Age, Fallout 3, or even, to a degree, Mass effect, is that the DLC was all self-contained new adventures. Playing Neverwinter Nights on its own, without Kingmaker, won't make the story any shorter, that content never actually comes into play, and it is therefore already a complete game.

I really don't like that sections of console games seem to be left off at retail and sold to me for 10 bucks more a pop if I want to get the most out of the game. and as far as Mass Effect goes? Bring down the sky came out after I had completed the game once through. I didn't really feel like playing through the game again, and all of my save files were after the point where you're back inside the colony, fighting Sovereign, and there really isn't a way to get back out into the main game from that point, so my only choice is to skip it or save it for the time when I want to play the game again some day... but since I'm happy with the choices I made with my characters, that probably won't be till after I've completed the sequel.

DLC has the potential to be a good thing, and some of it is even worth paying for when the price is right. but a lot of the time, I keep feeling that it just seems like they didn't finish the game, or they left a feature out, or the bonus of getting the dlc really isn't worth the price. games are expensive enough as it is.... is fallout 3 (60 bucks) plus its 5 pieces of DLC (10 bucks each, so thats 50 more) really worth 90 dollars to enjoy the content that is available? yes, I know that there's a GOTY edition out that includes the dlc, but when I've already paid for a game at launch, I really can't justify paying 50 bucks to get it all over again. All DLC is doing is causing me to no longer buy games at launch, and instead wait till i can get it cheaper (the clearance bin has become my friend) so I can maybe afford to buy the pack that is required to complete the game. and even then, oftentimes, i find myself just skipping it altogether. Odds are, when fallout 4 comes out, I won't even bother buying it until the game releases the GOTY edition. same goes for dragon age: I'm going to have to wait for it to go platinum hits or for a complete release if they're promising DLC before its even out.

its really turning me off to certain kinds of gaming, and thats really unfortunate because otherwise, in the past I would have probably really enjoyed them if it weren't for being nickled and dimed. money is tight now, after all.

why can't developers just ship a whole, finished product on the disc, and then start working on their next complete project?
