Dragon Age: Origins coming to the Mac soon photo

Dragon Age: Origins is coming to the Macintosh soon -- as in, December 21st soon.

Earlier this morning, Bioware and Electronic Arts announced the little white edition of the crimson-drenched RPG, stopping short of promising a similar experience to that Xbox 360, PS3, and PC owners have had thus far. But there might not be much to worry about: this port is powered by Trans Gaming’s Cider engine, a bit of tech that is powering the Mac versions of Warhammer Online, City of Heroes and multiple Ubisoft titles.

We should note that this version is digital only as of now and will launch in two different ways: as a standard edition package (which includes The Stone Prisoner and the Blood armor DLC) and as a Digital Deluxe Edition (which includes the aforementioned DLC, wallpapers, bonus items, the game's soundtrack and Warden's Keep DLC.)

Concerns over visuals and mechanics aside, I need to know if this game supports the Magic Mouse. Scroll wheels are so last decade.

You should really get on this, Brad, because this shit controls beautifully with a keyboard and mouse.

Hurrah! Well done Bioware. Wonder what the required specs for it will be? (GMA graphics card support please!)

I sure hope they don't port it like they did with The Sims 3 since that is just a custommade version of Crossover-games... which kind of makes the whole porting thing a mute point as lots of games can be run through emulation anyway :-)

it just not as performant as it could be on these wonderful machines... just too bad EA is too lazy to actually port the games and rather just emulates them :p

Too bad its not a BOXED RETAIL COPY! I guess they just assume all Mac users download stuff since everything for the iPhone is an App.

@ mistic,

Is a "mute" point the opposite of a talking point?

It's moot, by the way.

I know.. you knew that.

Anyway.. dragon age.. macs.. yay. Now good times can be had by slightly more people! Which is never a bad thing.

@runtheplacered sorry man, english is only my third language ( after Dutch and French, German as a fourth language) so indeed I didn't know that...

I love playing games on my mac, but when they do it in such a 'cheap' way, it just makes the game run like shit compared to what it could be... The sims 3 has to be turned WAY down to be able to play it since you're basically emulating windows in the background, while the mac is really good at playing native games ( like anything from ID Software )... even the laptops are pretty great gamingmachines, but if they have to emulate it's just wasting a lot of the available power of the machines which is truly a shame :-(

Lame. Cider is so shit.

Or you could just use Bootcamp. Although I guess that ruins the point of having a mac in the first place, eh?

Funny note - all Apple stores' gaming sections are lined with "Games for Windows" games. Ironic really.

It's cool that mac people can play DA:O now though. It's a great game.

@Jon B, that's the thing, if they use Transgaming, we're better of using our bootcamp-partition, which as you say ruins the whole point of having a mac :-)

dammit, I just got this game on the xbox. I should have waited and just gotten it for Mac. The console versions are a huge pain with regard to controls.

Use bootcamp and run windows in its own partition. Problem solved.

My friend does this and runs Borderlands, L4D2, and plenty of other new PC games on his Mac Book Pro. They run just as good as a true windows PC so I dont understand why more people with Macs dont do this!

No offense, but people have been doing that for quite a long time now. Releasing games on Mac is for people not interested in purchasing boot camp, purchasing windows, and/or having several partitions on their harddrives.

Dude, bootcamp comes free on every mac. Not to mention it's easy as hell to make a partition and then turn it back into one partition later.

Also, Dragon Age Origins is bullshit on consoles, the only way to play it is on pc. Or subsequently, a mac like I do running bootcamp.

I don't think that mac will continue to be able to put out games for their computers because the tech really doesn't allow a lot of graphics to be processed. Mac needs something like DirectX to help it out.

"Mac needs something like DirectX to help it out."

Snow Leopard has OpenCL, OpenGL, and Grand Central Dispatch so the onus is on developers at this point.

Despite Macs being the fastest growing computers outside of netbooks, the iPhone and, if it exists, the Tablet are likely going to drive most of the gaming on OS X. The desktop computer market is pretty set in stone and Windows' dominance will impair much desktop Mac gaming until things like WebGL become usable.
