Dragon Age II dev on DLC: add-in instead of add-on photo

"Oh, look, we've got a 91 Metacritic," begins Dragon Age II lead designer Mike Laidlaw. "But it's not 100, so there's got to be room to improve." Over the life of Dragon Age: Origins, Laidlaw's BioWare Edmonton team attempted to do just that using DLC as a proving ground for new ideas and fixes.

The DLC packages for Dragon Age boast a litany of improvements -- they introduced stamina draughts, a much-needed weapons locker, the ability to redistribute skill points, and Shale -- but they were also a way to explore new narrative structures in standalone campaigns, not all of which were successful.

The "Leliana's Song" campaign, for example, was an "amazing experience," explains Laidlaw. "People really liked playing it, but they felt a little disconnected because it wasn't their Warden involved. Fair point." BioWare's approach to DLC has been to take lots of feedback, but also to ground each package in the world of Dragon Age:

We took ... the best parts of [Origins and Awakenings], the parts that we are very proud of and very passionate about. Team-based combat, epic story, having the world of Dragon Age stay the world of Dragon Age, not some weird hybrid -- these are all things that we put a lot of effort into and we're very very happy with. And then, we continue to refine. So, we look at what we have in DLC: Where were our successes? Where were our failures? And we live up to them, the same way we did with Origins.

While packages like "The Stone Prisoner" and Awakening stand up as some of the best uses of downloadable content out there, fan response to the others hasn't been as positive. "Return to Ostagar" and "Witch Hunt" seem short and anemic, and most players thing "Warden's Keep," should have been included on the disc from the get go.

Laidlaw's team is listening to that, too, when planning for Dragon Age II DLC. "The lesson that we've learned from that [response] is that what people want is more content, a bigger pack that's a little weightier per piece. Maybe a little bit less of it as a result, because there's only so much effort to go around. And that they want it to be more of an add-in instead of an add-on, if that's not too fine a definition."

As for Hawke, the Champion of Kirkwall? "[Any DLC would] continue Hawke's adventures. It expands on the story that [players are] currently invested in, but adds a new element and a new piece of gameplay that makes them go, "Oh cool. That's really neat." So, that's the approach we're taking right now, and we'll just continue to learn and take feedback as we go."

Dragon Age II hits store shelves in March, and you can read my preview here.

I can't comment on the rest of the DA:O dlc, but The Witch Hunt was infuriatingly bad. Quite disappointing.

I've learned from the Dragon Age DLC as well. It's probably not the lesson the devs wanted.

Wait for the Ultimate Edition.

Witch Hunt was the worst DLC pack I've ever played.

the only good dlc that wasn't included in the preorder of DAO was awakenings the rest was kind of pointless and over priced

I don't count Shale as DLC - it came with the new package - but everything else was shit - and I bought every single pack just to support Bioware.

Golems of A. was bad - Leliana's was bad (and oddly $7) - Witch Hunt was horrible - Darkspawn was horrible - the Feastday pranks and gifts should not have costed money - Return to Ostagar was bad - Warden's Keep was...a stash box that costed $7.

Awakening was amazing, but it was appropriately priced for such content.

I have a feeling that EA will run Bioware into the ground.

Warden's Keep was good, but the short length made it obvious that it wasn't really "DLC", and instead a reward for buying new. Part storage should ABSOLUTELY NOT be something you have to buy after the fact. That really, really bothered me, even though it came with my copy.

What I mainly hope they've learned from the DA:O DLC is not to release DLC that hasn't been tested to work with the game. I had so much trouble getting the DLC to work, and I never did get the Shale DLC working. EA tech support even told me to go look on the forums, which I had already done, because they "couldn't help me with gameplay related problems". It was a horrible, infuriating experience. After all the problems I heard people were having with Return to Ostagar, I didn't even bother from there on out.

They need to do a much better job this time around for me to consider DA2 DLC.

Criticisms of Shale as "fake" DLC aside, I really loved that character, and I hope DA2 has more characters like her. I RPGs like this, I always prefer companions with unique abilities that no one else in the game world has (see also Planescape: Torment).

Seems like Bioware partnering with EA was the worst decision they ever made. Of course, with Bioware there's only two real decisions, a third one that doesn't really mean anything and a bunch of people to screw.

Well DA2 looks to be light years beyond DA1 in quality, so I guess that partnership isn't all bad.

@Armis, don't worry. Bioware caved in and made Dragon Age 2 specifically for you guys. Even though it sold respectfully on ALL platforms.

But hey, if it did not sell a million copies on console SOMETHINGs wrong apparently >.>.

Every game needs more Shale. He/She/It might be one of my favorite RPG characters of all time.

@keptsimple The more I played with Shale the more I realized that... "It" was created with the core game and just ripped out to sell back to us. No way Bioware can lie their way out of it, especially after releasing it with Day 1.

Loved Shale.

Hated having to create another goddman account just to download the DLC.

I don't use it other than to download DLC.

I hate silly wastes of time like that.

Just let me download the DLC.

DLC is fine when it is just "more of what you liked". It is not fine when:
1. It gives you some game changing item (eg player chest)
2. It is used to milk loyal fans who then get 15 minutes of second hand dungeons for $7 (eg RTO)
3. It is marketed aggressively in game (eg Warden's Keep) which breaks immersion.

Dragon Age DLC fails on all the above. I wonder if a different team at BW makes Mass Effect DLC - that is so much better...

@Sota: they had to strip out Shale because her character model literally didn't fit into the gameworld architecture. BioWare had time to trim her down in the time between when the game went gold and when it was released.

At least, that's the official BioWare story.
