Dr. Zilog is a self-described "electronica, experimental, death metal" group that, until today, I'd never heard of. That all changed when they released a chiptunes cover of Animal Collective's "My Girls." The chiptunes version is missing the (charming) lyrics, and, in a comment thread on the band's 8-bit Collective page, Dr. Zilog explains why: "Honestly I'm not a fan of 8-bit with vocals over it. Most of it just ends up being auto-tuned bull crap."
Even without it's lyrics, "My Girls" is still one of the strongest tracks from Animal Collective's Merriweather Post Pavillion, which was released earlier this year. While most of the band's catalog sounds like a sonic mess for the first half dozen-odd listens, "My Girls" is immediately enjoyable. More impressive, however, is the 8-bit re-creation of the psychedlic music video that Dr. Zilog have cooked up (after the break).
If chiptunes covers are, like, your thing, you should also check out Dr. Zilog's cover of MGMT's "Kids." You can download both songs for free from 8-bit Collective.

I actually quite liked both versions. I'm familiar with Animal Collective, but I admit that I've never really sat down and listened through any of their stuff. I liked it. I'm also becoming a bigger and bigger chiptune fan every day, so that was a good listen, too. Thanks for the story, Joe.
I think My Girls gets a lot less interesting without real vocals, but it's still quite impressive (especially the video). The MGMT cover is so fun and fantastic though.
Thanks for the awesome comments guys.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
I love this song, if nothing else from them.

You are right sir...that was ridiculously amazing.
Well...hopefully I can change that soon.
Original is better. Chiptunes are rad though.
