Dr. Phil trying to steal Jack's thunder; Oprah is not amused photo

Oprah's #1 prodigy, the bald-headed freak known as Dr. Phil, is now trying to steal Jack Thompson's crusade and make it his own. What a dick! Of course, he sorta looks like one too, but let's move on. Look at what this talking head had to say on Larry King Live:

“The problem is we are programming these people as a society. You cannot tell me - common sense tells you - that if these people are playing video games where they’re on a mass killing spree in a video game, it’s glamorized on the big screen, it’s become part of the fiber of our society. You take that and mix it with a psychopath, a sociopath, or someone suffering from mental illness, add in a dose of rage, the suggestability is just too high. And we’re going to have to start dealing with that. We’re going to have to start addressing those issues and recognizing that the mass murderers of tomorrow are the children of today that are being programmed with this massive violence overdose.”

Come on Phil, there's already one crazy Jack Thompson, we don't need another. Or do we? Hmmmmm.

So...is this industry going to defend themselves? Or are the news channels not allowing an interview or point/counterpoint with someone other than batshit fucktards?

This is what we call "jumping the bandwagon". As Dr. Phil would say "As a sand storm in July on a hot Texas day, video games are helping train your children as social killers. I mean, c'mon people! I'm bald!"

It's kinda funny that he is condoning violence and all that kinda stuff in media, when he was in that shitty Scary movie 4 or whatever. That in and of itself would send most to the brink of insanity, but he glorified violence in that movie, parody or not, he did cut his own leg off.

Did the even bother to wait until information on this bastard hit? No. They just assumed he was a gamer or learned how to kill from GTA. If you read any of the bios on him people say the kid didn't do anything recreational other than play basketball. Maybe basketball taught him how to murder people. I mean, you've seen the people who make it into the NBA now. Being a VT graduate I am certainly affected by this whole disaster, I even know people who were locked up in that building at the time of the shooting, but I can look past the whole "blame the media" thing and recognize that this kid was just apeshit nuts.

One of his English professors today said his writings in class were strange enough for her to report on several different occasions. Maybe we should blame books for people getting shot.

Accountability seems to be America's problem. It's never bad parenting or just some fucking insane person that gets the blame. It's how media influenced their decisions. It's such bullshit.

Precisely why I don't like Dr. Phil.

He's the feel good pill for all the fat-assed middle aged women in america.

Jesus I hate fucking talk shows. I watched his show that was like a 6 month report of that girl that got kidnapped down in Jamaica(?) last year. He had the mother on was suggesting to her that her daughter had been sold into the white slave sex trade. What a fucking tool. That's reassuring, seeing covert video footage of creepy looking men scouring for your daughter in pedophillic Mexican brothels.

I'd want my kid to be dead at that point.

Dr. Phil: The creepy low-life shitscum you can turn to when you think your life can't get any worse.

Yea this was on Gamepolitics this morning.

It's really sad to see them attack games without having any information to back it up.

Imagine how sweet it would be if the Industry started firing back and suing these people for making false claims.

I mean really to say a game trained us to use guns is ridiculous.

Related to the current tragedy or not I think both have a point but I don't agree with Thompsons way of solving the problem. Video games much like any other popular mediums will inspire the freaks out there to do really nasty stuff. Overall though I think video games do more good then bad but that doesn't mean we should ignore the few "problems" that might exist.

Banning or censhorship isn't the way to go though.

the only real problem in phil saying this regarding VT tragedy, is that noone knows a reason, cause, motive, history for and about the incident. So to be jumping the anti-violent media ship is way too early for this tragedy.

I sent Dr.Phil a comment,
Dear Dr. Phil,
I seen you on CNN the other day talking about the recent and tragic Virginia Tech shootings. You said that video games are what made the shooter do something like this. How do you know that for sure? Have you not seen or heard about violent movies and TV shows? Heck, there has been violence even before TVs, computers, and video games. Anyway, I have been playing video games since I was five years old and you don't see me shooting or harming anyone. Please stop with the un-creditable information. You are starting to sound like Jack Thompson.

Sincerely,
Aj Collins

dont forget to add
a smidge of a father thats to busy for his kids
a pinch of an alcoholic mother
a dash of pornograpy
and a heaping helping of no love.

and you got a person who will kill even if they havnt played a video in there life.
video games have nothing to do with it.
damn jerks.

I have said it before and I will say it again. Video games are not different than scary movies. Horror films glamourize mass killings and murder, but those are still around.

AS he said--"a psychopath, a sociopath, or someone suffering from mental illness." Which means not a normal person. I know that horror movies went through the same ordeal back in the day, and they are still around. That is why there is a rating system for games...To keep them out of the hands of children. If a child has the game, maybe we should be looking at the parents instead.

There will always be these violent murder sprees as long as guns are readily available. The fact that the weapons' numbers were filed off tells you how easy illegal arms are acquired in this country... all this energy should be put into aggressively searching and confiscating weapons, and disposing of them properly, not wasting that money in biased law suits pointing the finger in the wrong direction.

".....mix it with a psychopath, a sociopath, or someone suffering from mental illness...."

So you get someone who is fucked in the head and let them kill people virtually.....wow that almost states the obvious if they are messed it doesnt matter if they read a book about killing they still might adapt and believe it to be real/ok to do. The bibel has the debil in it so that means god says killing is ok...right? Burn every piece of knowledge that man kind has ever produced about any kind of violence then we will all be safe.

Put an alcoholic in a room full of alcohol and they will drink. Put matches in the hands of a 10yr they will burn somthing, give a murder a gun theywill kill someone. Let a blind person drive, they will crash....needs I go on?

I agree but I don't even think parents shouldn't give their kids violent games. My parents just taught me correctly, I guess. They told me that this is make believe, and death is a horrific thing in real life. I've played FPS mature games all my life, starting with Wolfenstein 3D and I've never found the need to go kill someone. I haven't even been in a fight since 5th grade..

Dr. Phil Says -You take that and mix it with a psychopath, a sociopath, or someone suffering from mental illness, add in a dose of rage, the suggestability is just too high.

[b]That part isn't hard to believe at all. Someone who is unstable won't need much, if anything to cause them to go over the edge. The problem is, you can't single out music, or videogames as the cause of this. An unstable person could just as easily freak out over seeing a kitten, or some other harmless (non-related) object.

This sort of behavior happened long before video games came on to the scene, and will still be around if video games leave us. People are always looking for something to point the finger at when tragedy strikes, or to help us deal with the things we cannot explain. Just so happens that video games are the current scapegoat.

This will change with time, as those in office will be gamers themselves. Then this shit will cease.

From the article, and the horse's mouth:

"You take that and mix it with a psychopath, a sociopath, or someone suffering from mental illness, add in a dose of rage, the suggestability is just too high."

Well ... no shit. DPhil answers his own question: games don't turn normal people insane, it's just that, every once in a while, a psychopath (to use his words) gets his hands on Doom. Every once in a while, some psycho stabs someone with a butterknife, but we haven't outlawed those yet.
Goei's Avatar - Comment posted on 04/17/2007 15:53

At least he says that video game violence add to the psychopath's violence, not make it. And of course tomorrows murderers are children playing video games today - that is where the psychopath-hellspawn child vents his rage and violent urges. Video games don't program kids to kill, the already violent kids just take notes.
