Downloadables: Every night is Monday Night Combat! photo

In about a month, I'll reach my one year anniversary with one of the most satisfying purchases I've ever made from the Xbox Live Arcade: Monday Night Combat

When Monday Night Combat first piqued my interest, it was probably 4 years ago, 3 years before the game even released. I remember seeing a colorful trailer with 6 different, colorful characters of varying designs, fighting against robots, turrets, and other characters like themselves. The setting was some sort of futuristic, sponsored death sport with colorful characters and maps.

I was jaded by the Call of Duty franchise and military shooters as a whole. They just felt too homogenized as many players used the same perks, same guns, same killstreaks, same everything! When you've been killed by one ACR/AK-47/Famas, you've been killed by them all. But I couldn't play one of the best class-based shooters,Team Fortress 2, because my PC is old enough to be considered my older brother. To give you an idea of how old it is, its original hard drive, which is still installed on it, is 40GB big.

But Monday Night Combat was different.

I had never seen a game like this before. What do I mean by that? It looked like it offered the same general experience as a real AAA title, but from indie developer Uber Entertainment and for only $15! Truly it was an oddity among its peers for quality.

Everything about the game, despite being a $15 indie title, seemed to top everything I felt about other shooters like the ever ubiquitous CoD. The chemistry and match ups between the 6 classes was intriguing. The focus on objective gameplay and lessened focus on kill/death ratio made for a different multiplayer experience. And despite the (extremely) high barrier of skill, this high skill requirement allowed dedicated players to always been in control and know how they died. In games like CoD, death can come swiftly and oftentimes randomly.

A regular, dreaded sight from Modern Warfare 2, slightly different in Black Ops, soon to return again in Modern Warfare 3.

It wasn't fun to run into a room, meet a bogey, and see both your guns fire only to find yourself dead and respawning. What happened? Why did it happen? Did I deserve this death? What a load!

But in Monday Night Combat, everything is much more controlled. If I enter an area suddenly and run into a class such as an Assault, the results are within the grasp of my control. For example, if I were a Tank, I would have the advantage and could kill the Assault. If the Assault knew he was at a disadvantage, he could also control his game and try running away. There are no random, instant deaths or uncontrollable circumstances in MNC.

It also helps that the characters are quirky and colorful.

The game is also on Steam and is clearly balanced differently due to the inherent difference in control between a pad and a mouse/keyboard. I have still stuck with the game even though the PC version continually tempts me with their slew of updates. Microsoft's rigorous certification process is not very nice to my favorite game as it delayed the release of MNC's first DLC pack and has hung the status of the second DLC into a state of uncertain limbo.

But that's how big a fan of the game I am. Even though the last update was in December, even though the PC version has received 8 updates since its own release in January, and even though support of the game seems doubtful at best presently, the game is still fun enough that I don't care how the game will be supported in the future. Even if the game turns into another example of Team Fortress 2 on the console (which is very pitiful I believe), I'll continue to play the game for as long as I can find good lobbies.

Someday baby. Someday.

I can go on and on about the intricacies of the game. I'm a long time, registered member of the official Uber forums, so I've fully invested myself in knowing everything about the game. Half the videos on my YouTube channel are probably devoted to MNC gameplay and commentary, even though the game is such a niche title that will never get me many hits. This is the extent of my devotion to the little indie game that could against the giant, corporate names that dominate the market.

YES!!! MNC!! Seriously bro, you need to join up on our Friday Night Fights and play with us.

Anyway yeah, I adore MNC over TF2 - it's more lighthearted and I think the characters are a lot more colorful.

I like the look of MNC. And I'll agree with Caiters, it looks more lighthearted than TF2 (which just frightens me at this point - its userbase just seem insanely invested in that shiz)

I still play this game consistently online, which is more than I can say about pretty much any online shooter. I still say it's fun even though I spend 90% of my time raging while I play. >_>

Heck yes! I'm definitely frustrated with the lack of updates and balance fixes to the 360 version, but it's still a very fun game that's a hoot to play with friends. :)

I'm actually fairly new to Dtoid. My sister suggested Dtoid as a place to continue writing while I search for a job. I'll definitely research all this jazz about FNF.

MNC is probably the best purchase I've ever done.

300 hours of enjoyment for some spare change.

Join us in FNFs. Watch Caiters try to do the assassin. It's comedy of it's own.

I didn't buy the Steam version cause the community became a straight up joke. Also, for the entire time it was on Free Weekend mode, I absolutely destroyed everyone and everything ever with just the Tank class. And this is someone who bought the 360 version at launch. So the skill level in the games are either terrible or Tank is seriously overpowered.

Fun game but I just got tired of it. I also wish they went Valve on it and added more stuff but...what can you do.

Hell yeah, been awhile since I played but I loved it when I did. Probably hop back into it soon.

MNC is often called a TF2 clone. This is unfair and false - there are a lot of differences - but the fact remains that TF2 is more fun to me, personally.

A large part of it might be that none of the classes really fit me...

The reason its called a TF2 clone is because of the following.

1. It has classes
2. They have distinguishable personalities.

THATS. IT. It is unfair but it's not blatant whatsoever. As long as they make it their own.

Yeah liked this game, however it lacked a lot of basic options that make a dota game good, there are no ranked matches, the charaters are set in stone and aboutt he only amount of cousitmisation is very slim, but it has kick ass gameplay that seems to make up for those qualitys.

I hope that they build onto this game more bring the fps to more of a true dota

It's pretty funny how DOTA is always brought up for newcomers but dedicated Pros view turrets as a liability. I play Assassin, so they're definitely free money to me!

I just wanted to come in here to say that I love you.

Err, I mean, I love this game. Seriously. Been playing it nearly every day since launch...first on the 360, then on the PC. Dunno how many hours on the 360, but on PC...since February...I've accrued 200 hours. I've abandoned the 360 version for the PC version, even though the competition the the PC is...laughable at best.

Best 15 dollars I've ever spent.

Sounds like the community here plays it, but...on the 360. :(
If any of you folks wants to play on PC...hit me up, ashpanic on Steam. :)

I spoke to Eka recently and he said that there would be something revealed for PAX...wonder if the 360 owners will finally see something for them!?

DOUBLE POST AAAAH Oh yeah, check out my favorite achievement on this game: not a single person on my team dies, even though we had a few randoms. Pardon me and or my friends, you can hear our chat in the video and I freak the fuck out at the end when I realize nobody died that round.

I really do enjoy MNC, but my problem is the same as just about every other online game - no one really seems to want to work together or plan anything. It's all a bunch of Lone Wolves Lone Wolfing it up and as a Medic that gets old. I got back into it slightly after the Spunky Cola update, but found myself encountering the same problems all over again.
