Download free Dragon Quest IX maps at retail stores photo

Fun fact: Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies is my first foray into the series. This is made even weirder by my general dislike of turn-based role-playing games. Something about it -- most likely the jolly presentation -- grabbed my attention.

I'm not sure about the rest of you, but I sure as heck don't know anyone nearby who owns Dragon Quest IX. Considering how much effort was put into making its multiplayer compelling, this is an issue. Thankfully, that's nothing a few in-store events can't (temporarily) remedy.

  • July 31: Select GameStops will throw a DQ meet-up, while most stores will offer the "Zoma" map
  • August 7: Select Best Buy locations will have the "Estark" map
  • August 7 to September 19: Select malls will have the "Malroth" map and hold sampling events for the game

Treasure maps can be obtained through Tag Mode, which is accessed at the Quester's Rest Inn in Stornway. Details on which store locations are participating in these Dragon Quest shenanigans can be found by clicking here.

Maz-
Seth Green playing a DS? Where's that pic from?

@ Jordan Devore and anyone else concerned: NONE of these treasure maps are the random grotto maps. They are boss maps, which are the same for everyone. If you don't get these maps at these events, they're still DLC months from now.

@Maz - That's from the US TV commercial for the game.

Yes, yes, but which one will have the fabled masayuki map?

More than likely, the Masayuki map will never be distributed through the retailers. And really, why should it? Given enough time, you can create your own map with similar conditions. There have been people on GameFAQs telling about how they have found their own "metal king slimes only" floor in a dungeon. It's not like the Masayuki map is special, it was just the first MKS-only map to be found.

@teriyakiCHICKEN - I was kidding, mostly. ;-). And yes, I have heard about a TON of new maps emerging that have metal king slimes only floors.

Supposedly someone found a map with a platinum king jewel only floor, but I'm not buyin' that one until I see a video.

Uh, yeah. I'm skeptical as well. But I did read that posted on GameFaqs earlier.

Man, I beat the first Dragon Quest (known to me as Dragon Warrior at the time) many many moons ago. However, besides a few random hours in a few of the NES sequels, I haven't played any in the series since. This is especially odd, as I love RPG's and especially love classic J-RPG's. My only explanation: my slow transformation into a PC gamer...

@killias2 - Ah yes, I remember the good ol days of Dragon Warrior. I was a tad bit obsessed with that game. All I can say is that if you own a DS, it is in your best interest to pick up DQ IV, DQ V, and DQ IX. Also, DQ VI is supposed to be announced for the US soon, finally completing the Zenethia trilogy.

Wait, wait, I still haven't picked this up yet, as I just beat IV, and have V waiting in the wings.

But what's this about exclusive maps?
Does this mean that if I don't buy the game and go to Gamestop on the day of 31st, I'll be missing out on this Zoma game content... forever?

That really doesn't sit well with me...

@jp007 - It should be available as DLC in the future as TeriyakiCHICKEN posted above.

So if walk into one of these stores on one of those particular dates with my DS in tag mode, I'll pick up a map? I've heard about this several times and I don't even know If I'll go because it's not a short trip for me.
PappaDukes's Avatar - Comment posted on 07/29/2010 15:43
PappaDukes
@superdeeduper51 - That is correct. The Gamestop will have a DS setup in tag mode with the map. Plus, you can (possibly) pick up other treasure maps from other people that show up if they have any.

Hmm, don't you need a DSi to download these maps? I can't stand the DSi Control Pad, so I'll never be buying one.

Will the map simply be unlocked on the cart?
Electrium's Avatar - Comment posted on 07/29/2010 15:58

@ Killrig - No, you can download them from any DS. I'm not sure exactly how it works, though.

@Killrig - You can use any ds, but it uses the built in wifi which has to be configured. You can configure it from the DQ 9 load screen. So you'll have to configure it when you get to the gamestop to work with the wifi there.

Great. Thanks guys! Depending on how busy I am, I'll hit the stores up to get in on this DLC action.

Someone who isn't me has a copy on his/her DSTT, I imagine he/she would have problems acquiring these maps at said event?

@ScurvySee - Nope. This person who isn't you shouldn't have any problems.

I'll definitely be hitting up my Best Buy. Doesn't look like any of the Gamestops near me are doing it. Jerks!

Still need to pick this up. Also quick question (sorry if asked elsewhere). Is a DSi needed to download the maps DLC style.

Why do so many people think wi-fi requires a DSi? Has no one played a DS game with wi-fi before now?
