Double Fine is making an old school adventure game, but can't do it alone. In fact, the ambitious developer intends to fund its next project entirely through Kickstarter donations from people like you. No corporate middle-men, no signing away of rights -- this is the good stuff!
The game will be on Steam and aims to utilize modern touch technology. October 2012 is the planned release date for what is simply called "Double Fine Adventure" for the moment.
The Kickstarter page is right here, with donation rewards starting at $15. Those who donate the minimum will get the game, plus access to the beta. A tie-in documentary will be available for those who pledge higher amounts.
This is an exciting venture, and something I'm very excited to see. Here's wishing Double Fine the very best of luck ... though something tells me they'll get the cash from gamers easily. I just donated ... you gonna?

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!

Did you even read the article? They don't want to deal with a publisher. They want it to be entirely done in-house and self published. As for capital, remember Psyconaughts and Brutal Legend (their two retail releases) were huge failures and while I'm sure their downloadable titles have been doing well, Microsoft has been publishing them.
Rebellion is probably the worst example you could use. Game development is only a small part of Rebellion Developments. They do a lot outside of video games including movies, books, comics, and table-top RPGs.
I'll have to give the Sesame Street game a try, but I'm not too keen on Double Fine at the moment. Still, this is a pretty big first for an independent studio, so maybe I'll donate just to help them out.
I gave 'em 15 bones and I don't even LIKE adventure games.
This is a brilliant idea and by the looks of it they'll reach
their $400,000 goal in less than a day. :D
If they went back to that IP, I'd love that.
You know what? I didn't hesitate. I know it's worth it.
It is Tim freakin' Schafer!!! Let's make it happen people. My favorite adventure games have Tim's name somewhere in the credits.
It mentions "touch technology" and that makes me curious, but then it mentions it is for Steam and not iOS (unless they get way more than the goal), so that helps set my mind at ease.
You go Tim, you go!
Holy hell.
