Double Fine to fund game exclusively through Kickstarter photo

Double Fine is making an old school adventure game, but can't do it alone. In fact, the ambitious developer intends to fund its next project entirely through Kickstarter donations from people like you. No corporate middle-men, no signing away of rights -- this is the good stuff!

The game will be on Steam and aims to utilize modern touch technology. October 2012 is the planned release date for what is simply called "Double Fine Adventure" for the moment.

The Kickstarter page is right here, with donation rewards starting at $15. Those who donate the minimum will get the game, plus access to the beta. A tie-in documentary will be available for those who pledge higher amounts.

This is an exciting venture, and something I'm very excited to see. Here's wishing Double Fine the very best of luck ... though something tells me they'll get the cash from gamers easily. I just donated ... you gonna?

$15. Go for it, Tim. Though I wish I had $10,000 so we could hang out. :(

I just finished Psychonauts after 9 straight hours of playing. (I'm crazy) The game is great, not much else I can say. I am seriously considering putting my money forward on this. I also happen to love adventure games too. :D

I have a really hard time believing that DF has no capital, and that no publisher will give them the time of day, if crap studios like rebellion can do it, anyone can. I think they just want to ride the indie train.

Just backed them $15. Would have loved to have given more, but grad student life isn't exactly known for high income. Once I land a real job, I will totally give more.

Thanks for bringing this to our attention, Jim!

@npa189

Did you even read the article? They don't want to deal with a publisher. They want it to be entirely done in-house and self published. As for capital, remember Psyconaughts and Brutal Legend (their two retail releases) were huge failures and while I'm sure their downloadable titles have been doing well, Microsoft has been publishing them.

Rebellion is probably the worst example you could use. Game development is only a small part of Rebellion Developments. They do a lot outside of video games including movies, books, comics, and table-top RPGs.

I don't buy that a normal point and click adventure game could cost 400 grand, I certainly don't believe a touch based one is worth that kind of cash.

I'd like to at least see some kind of concept art, first. While I really like Tim Scahfer, I wasn't a fan of Brutal Legend. Like, at all. That game really upset me.

I'll have to give the Sesame Street game a try, but I'm not too keen on Double Fine at the moment. Still, this is a pretty big first for an independent studio, so maybe I'll donate just to help them out.

Wow, Tim Schafer/Double Fine really has clout. Already the $10k spot is gone and nine out of ten of the $5k spots are gone.

Did it with very little hesitation. I'm not even sure I like point and click games like that anymore. But I want Tim Schafer to do a game his way and come out on top.

I actually really enjoyed Brutal Legend, but the stage battles were pretty weak. I much preferred the hack n slash aspects coupled with my magical guitar. The story was pretty neat, too. And FUCKING METAL!

Put down the $15 immediately, as far as I am concerned its just a preorder for the next game I would have bought anyway.

their $400,000 goal in less than a day. :D

Brutal Legend was a great game for the most part, however it was obviously rushed towards the end. I really wish they would have taken more time to build the end of the game up. Instead they kind of just suddenly introduced a new boss right after you defeated the guy who you thought was the actual boss and then you fight him without much build up after the fight with "Emo/Goth" faction.

If they went back to that IP, I'd love that.

BRILLANT. This is so much the right way to do it. Publishers don't believe in adventure games done by Double Fine, well I do. storytelling, humor, crazy characters, trying amazingly stupid things just to read the protagonist say "There's no way I'm doing that.", Adventure games are the best.

I'm going in pretty hard on this one. Like, "I don't want my friends to know how much money I put into this because they'll think I'm irresponsible" hard.

You know what? I didn't hesitate. I know it's worth it.

I legitimately started crying tears of joy while reading the kickstarter, I'm typing this through teary eyes right now. This is everything I have ever wanted and hoped for since going behind my mothers overly cautious watch and playing Grim Fandango back in 1998. 100 dollars pledged! I didn't know what I was gonna do with my income taxes anyway.

Kickstarter is the greatest idea ever. The level of pure joy I feel giving my money to a business project through it is something the marketing teams of EA and Ubisoft could only ever dream of making me feel when I buy their products.

$30 all in! They are already half way to the goal of $400k.

It is Tim freakin' Schafer!!! Let's make it happen people. My favorite adventure games have Tim's name somewhere in the credits.

It mentions "touch technology" and that makes me curious, but then it mentions it is for Steam and not iOS (unless they get way more than the goal), so that helps set my mind at ease.

You go Tim, you go!

$100 and glad to do it. It's amazing! In four hours they've broken the $200K mark ... and they thought it would take over a month to fund! I'd love to know what Tim Schafer is really thinking right now.
