Spotted on Power Glove's always epic C-blog, this new trailer for Street Fighter IV could be the most thought provoking yet.Not because it has an alarming amount of new content, because it doesn't. Everything that shows up in this trailer is at least ten years old: old favorites like Ryu, Zangief, and... Faith No More's Epic?
Clearly Capcom is trying to appeal to the nostalgia (and disposable incomes) of young adults, now out of college with good paying jobs, who ten years ago were experiencing puberty, "Alternative Rock and Roll" and Street Fighter II allfor the first time. That's all well and good, by why the Youtube-yness, Capcom? When this video ended and there was no "Created by a 14 year old 'Make your own Street Fighter video' contest winner!", I almost fell over.
There is borrowing from YouTube the right way, and then there is this. Or am I being too harsh?

I think we are being a little harsh only because the trailer was intended to tell the general masses who were tuned into last night's Pride FC event that that there is a new Street Fighter game coming out. It was a commercial for the general public.
I did think anything special of the trailer itself but I believe that it serves its purpose as a commercial.
I have got to be in the minority as the more I see of Street Fighter IV[i] the more it looks more like a parody of a street fighter game then a true successor to [i]Third Strike.
Ummm, I don't see anything wrong with the commercial. There trying to reach out to the original street fighter players with a small amount of old footage from the old games, but the commercial contains 3/4 of the new game's footage.
I like the music. It's upbeat and hardcore. It's better than some half-@ssed Sony commercial with a weird baby in it. I see know reason to complain about this video.
this was the trailer that took place during the EliteXC fight on CBS. Man that show put a bad taste in my mouth as I wonder why CBS couldn't just deal with the UFC. The trailer wasn't that great, but its good to see Capcom get back into MMA.
You're being too harsh. This isn't a trailer for gamers, it's a trailer for the general public who thought Street Fighter was the shit a decade ago, who've grown up and now watch MMA, and it's meant to appeal to their nostalgia, something Capcom is quite good at.
It might not look like I'd want it to, but I'll be damned if I'm not looking forward to this game.
Looks like shit, and the song makes the whole thing feel homosexual. Listen to that song and then combine it with what you see bare chested dudes an anal pile driver and some guy staring at you like hes going to molest you all night long.
I was thinking the same thing as i was watching the WCW-esque MMA program that is "Elite XC". As i watched it i couldn't get over how amateurly the show looked like it was made. I just kept feeling the comparison between WWF and WCW. WCW always sporting the exageratedly deep voicced announcers that look like geeks, the smoke machines and the lazers. But then when i saw the Street Fighter trailer i just got sad. Really sad. Definately looked like a youtube trailer.
Also, if you go on www.streetfighter.com you'll see in the background a gif that some random ass guy made as the background. Shitty quality and all. As for the trailer, I felt very betrayed that there was no ALPHA, OR STREET FIGHTER 3 action AT ALL. It almost made me a bit sick.
@Kia
Yes, and Joystiq and its readers are the absolute finest of all internet users and gamers. Also, I swear, you people take this shit way too seriously. It'll be a fun fucking fighting game, not the Second Coming of Christ. Chill out.
EXCEPT FOR CAMMY. CAMMY IS SERIOUS BUSINESS, MOTHERFUCKERS.
After a few watchings, I actually really like the commercial. I always did like it. It was who Hamza peer pressured me into saying bad things about it.
Or, Faith is peer pressuring me into saying good things about it. Depends on how you look at it.
And for the record, "Epic" was a huge hit for many months, as was Faith No More. I saw them open up for Metallica/Guns 'N Roses back in the day, and the crowd completely loved them.
It wasn't the best of game ads, but it got the word out. However, telling people about something that is not due until next year seems a bit premature. And while 'Epic' is a classic of that time period, they did a poor job of integrating it with the video clips. The biggest problem is the history. Street Fighter has been out of the picture for so long. Your average Joe is probably saying to themselves, "There was a Street Fighter III?" And those who played SFIII and then dropped out of gaming are looking at it saying, "Why isn't anyone from SFIII?" And some are probably saying, "Capcom is making another Street Fighter EX? Man, why can't they just make a 2D Street Fighter IV."
Well, "Epic" was a huge hit for Faith No More, but most of their other stuff was a bit too weird to make them a household name. I, however, loved the commercial and if Faith No More was featured prominently in more commercials, I'd probably buy more stuff.
I personally liked it. It tugged at the old nostalgia heartstrings on two fronts, and I thought it was very well edited.
I don't see where all the hate is coming from. I mean, seriously, it's a one-two punch for the masses: new-school 3D graphics for the mainstream, and enough fanservice for the fanboys.
Unfortunately, it seems the fanboys are pissed, so they're screwing up somewhere.
"young adults, now out of college with good paying jobs, who ten years ago were experiencing puberty, "Alternative Rock and Roll" and Street Fighter II all for the first time."
Ummm... I dont' know about you, but 10 years ago I was playing Street Figher Alpha 3. Who the hell still played SF2 in 1998?
Yes I do match the young adult description; I'm 24 and out of college for awhile now.
To my knowledge many of us were too busy playing Xmen vs Street fighter and Dark Stalkers 3 to pay attention to SF2 in 1998 and arguing how the Saturn version of the games trumps the psx version, and nerdy online discussions went on to fever pitch.
I"m not too happy with SF4. Personally, it seems all their trying to do is cater to the 30-something crowd that stop playing video games in highschool and college (because it was uncool) and just recently gotten back to them because its become socially acceptable. Now we have watered down fighter that any self respecting fighter fan would dismiss at an instant. I'm getting tired of these games that pull heart strings of aged gen-x'ers and 80's babies who want to be gen-x'ers (if you are in your early 20s you do not remember 80s).
I see nothing wrong with this trailer. It's upbeat, the music is tasteful and you get an eyeful of in game and a hint of CG. I really love the art direction this franchise has taken for this upcoming version.
The website has a link to gamestop for the preorder. I wonder if they threw in some of udon's artwork in there for the XBLA/PSN game as well. The website currently has a poll for the collectors edition. The figurine option is dominating the poll.
It wasn't the music, I love FNM.
It wasn't the game, I love SF.
Whoever edited that "trailer" needs to be relentlessly beaten in the face with a twig. It screams stereotype and quick'n'dirty, which is great for sex, but not the long-overdue fourth installment in the saga that defined my late childhood and teenage years - the saga of my arcade-monitor-lit coming of age. You see, that trailer only hurts the way it does because it, in and of itself, is the shitty YouTube AMV version of my sweetest memories of my past.
Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. Not too bad for a commercial.
I like the music. It's upbeat and hardcore. It's better than some half-@ssed Sony commercial with a weird baby in it. I see know reason to complain about this video.
Read the Joystiq post about this video. The vast majority of commenters agree SFIV looks like total ass. I tend to agree.
Ha ha, you read Joystiq.

Its not even a fighting game, to say that is to have high expectations. No this is a shit eating simulator.

Capcom, you're starting to piss me off. :(
Sure is trolling in here.
