They need to go new or the hardcore gaming public will scrutinize it on large to the point where it might get bad.

You'll never know where this will go. I doubt it's going to be purely a tower defense game, and might take a few new design choices in order to make it seem fresh. Don't knock it till it's out... Unless of course, you're waiting for something Valve has denied to speak of >>
They most certainly do need another DotA, and this one won't be a remake it will be what made DotA the most successful.
When IceFrog took over he finetuned that game to perfect balance, a feature many people say are the biggest reason they play so much, whereas Riot Games and S2 Games merely took their concept and forgot to balance.

I tried getting into DotA but people kept booting me from the waiting room for not having the map already. Then I would go find a Shopping Maul.
@Zerix: I can't speak for HoN, but LoL has done pretty well on the balance front as near as I can tell. Adjustments get made every week, and recently dropped some pretty tough nerfs to correct how out of hand healing had gotten.

The two reasons I don't like HoN is the balance issue, and the trial of switching from DotA to HoN. Changing the names and icons of everything completely threw me for a loop.
The one thing that b.net does not offer is a good matchmaking service, which HoN and I suspect LoL have. Imo, if we've got Icefrog, plus a good matchmaking service, plus Valve... this is a game I'm likely to buy.

Considering this is Valve we're talking about, and the voice of Duke Nukem is a member of the cast, I guarantee the setting of this game will include guns, explosions, and complete mayhem.
I can't wait for this. DotA caused many, many late nights until I got too much stuff on my computer to hold it (and a 360...). I still pick it up every now and then though. Keep us posted on this.
Imagine this: rather than a top-down RTS-style DotA, a third person action game DotA. The camera follows in close behind your hero and you play it like an action game or shooter.
Definitely interesting. I just wonder what niche it would fill between the hardcore/competitive HoN and the more casual LoL.
Given how Alien Swarm is just a polished up version of the old game, and likewise, CS: Source, Day of Defeat: Source, etc. etc. I don't think it's reasonable to conclude they are adding a spin to it.

The WCIII player in me RAGES every time he hears talk of "DotA style" like it's a genre or something. It's not. Any game found on the WCIII equivalent of UMS where you control a hero against waves of faction spawns that you kill to level up so you can turn the tide against the other heroes and take out their win condition building is NOT DotA. DotA is the most famous and probably the most shallow of the offerings out there, but it was not the first.

Of course, no one cares and this will never become the buzzword for this new genre, but please, as retarded video game genres go, "DotA-esque" is really pretty poor.

i currently pledge my allegiance to riot, if valve can make a game better than (or equivalent to) LoL, I will buy the shit out of it.
my guess is that all this is just valves move to mess with gamers mind. its not a new DotA, its just the initials of a new game. and then they will launch a rpg game called Destiny of the Albinos.
