Doom 4: The Doomaning announced

Doom 4: The Doomaning announced photo
     QuakeCon

Earlier today, during the keynote address at this year’s QuakeCon, id CEO Todd Hollenshead announced that there will, in fact, be another Doom game. Presumably due to the game being way too early in development there weren’t any trailers or concept art to show attendees.

Hollenshead did give a quick rundown of features that we can expect to see, though, stating that "There will be guns, blood, demons, and gibs." It might be something of a stretch, but I’m also predicting that players will be controlling a tough as nails space marine that will be using the guns to evoke blood sprays from the demons while simultaneously waxing poetic about the state of the environment.

The new Doom game will be using the same id Tech 5 engine as id’s other in-development FPS, Rage. According to John Carmack, though, we can expect it to "look like it's built on another engine,” due to the new Doom using "three times the horsepower."

While it was also announced that this will be a multiplatform release, Carmack was keen to stress that the “guns, blood, demons, and gibs” on the PC version will be looking far better than their console counterparts: "In other words, the PC version of the new Doom should look significantly better than on the Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3, whereas the console ports of Rage will be more or less the same visually.”

So, are you looking forward to some new graphically intensive “guns, blood, demons, and gibs?”

I don't care how crazy this sounds, but:

Screw this, I want more Doom RPG.

Less scary monster closets and more action, and we might finally get a real Doom 3, rather than that last pile of poop called Doom 3.

Is that comic actually real? Like, no text editing? That's pretty bad...

There is that Rogue-like called "DoomRL". Text-based Doom? Very awesome.

It's kind of cool I'm actually here at QCon for that. They misunveiled it at the end of the Wolf RPG trailer due to their IR remote. It was actually kind of funny.

How exactly did he kill the legacy dephect?

Doom 3 was just like the other dooms, just prettier, the audio diaries added a lot of character to the game.

Why do people look at Doom with such reverence? Yea they where good games FOR THEIR TIME but have you played them today? They are vastly outdated and haven't really aged that well.

The legacy is intact, its only whiny little bitches(like you) that can't let go of the past and look at everything wth nostalgic googles.

@Pendelton and TurboJasper: You might like that they also announced Doom RPG 2.

@Kyousuke Nanbu: I guess the same way people have such reverence for Halo, except Halo is pretty generic, and Doom at least was one of the first of it's kind.

I played Doom 3 on my Xbox, and thought it was pretty good. I liked it enough to play though it, at any rate. I would definitely be interested in checking out Doom 4

@Kyousuke Nanbu

I dont see how someone can say the old ones are very outdated and havent aged well... but in the same sentence say the legacy is still intact.

Reguardless there is no reason to cry... (pats your shoulder)

Why do people insist on thinking Doom III should have been different? The damn thing was a retelling of the first, and there wasn't much there to tell in the first place, story-wise anyhow.

Doom IV could prove to be very different, but stop hating on Doom III it was great for what it was, homage to the first.
