The father of FPS games, id Software, has revealed that the legendary Doom franchise is getting a new sequel in Doom 4. The game is currently in production, though so far there is no word on formats or a release date (PC can be pretty much assured, though).
The studio behind Doom, Quake and Wolfenstein has declared, however, that it is looking for new talent to work on this new sequel. This is, in fact, how the game was announced -- a mere advertisment for talent, rather than some huge "WE CAN HAS DOOM" press release. How odd.
There are no details yet, but I wonder if this was the "bid daddy of secret AAA shooters" that I posted about only a few minutes ago that PSM3 promised to reveal next month. Remember how I said the Internet would have it first? That was bloody quick, even by Internet standards.
What do you reckon on this? Interested? I never got around to trying Doom 3, despite the average-to-great reviews. I really want to see Doom go back to its roots, with familiar enemies, settings and storyline all taking place in glorious hi-definition. That would make me very, very happy. Something about the re-imagined premise never quite sat well with me. Either way, I'm keeping on eye on this, and hopefully id does something to remind us why it was the FPS king -- it's certainly got a lot of competition these days.

They should bring it back to its roots of fun, arcady action. Ditch the moody, powerhouse stuff.

I'm with you on that one. If you re-imagine something it should be called a remake not a sequel. I guess that's one thing Turok 08 got right(Of course they were mistaken by thinking we wanted it re-imagined in the first place).

You're honestly not missing much with DOOM 3. It has a few moments where it lapses back into the style of play the first two have, but for the most part it's a slow plodding survival horror game where your biggest enemies are your slow ass character and reloading your weapons.
DOOM and DOOM 2 were NOT about that, they were about fast paced and frantic action where the scares came from the fact that scores of enemies just appeared that could easily kill you if you let them. That, and effectively being able to kill things with a chainsaw. ^_^

After that it was just step forward, enemy pops up in scary way, shoot it while moving back, go back where I came from after killing it to get ammo and health I previously left behind, go back to spot where enemy appeared, step forward, enemy pops up, repeat.
All the enemies from previous games where there, but the way the levels were so cramped and the repetition really made that game seem like a chore to finish.

I want some screenshots, but looking at the pace this thing is taking, probably in three more months... they are probably working on a new engine that will rape everything and aiming more to the consoles.

Make something fresh. I liked doom3 I played it on coop with a friend via xboxlan.

Either way, I'd totally be on board for another trek into hell!

At some points the game should keep with the scary atmosphere and jump-out-at-you gameplay of Doom 3 to surprise and shock the player but you can't do this all the time (like done in Doom 3) or it cheapens the effect. For that other portion I'd like to see fast paced combat against large numbers of enemies more akin to Doom 1/2. Also in the same note a more open flow of the levels that don't quite feel as on-rails as Doom 3 would be good.
Doom 4 could do well to borrow a little bit from Serious Sam in my opinion.

Commander Keen remake YES PLEASE.
Must stay 2D though, but incorporate current game play technology while staying fun, and respectful of the original series' style. Seriously that's not really asking too much, just holding back on the NEXT-GEN mentality.

LOL, like the fact that Quake4's general play style is way past its prime had nothing to do with it. I loved quake 1,2, and 3 back in the day but things have changed a lot since then.
05/07/2008 15:46
Also I LOL @ throwing quake 4 in the mix with how well doom 3 was, it wasnt even made by the same company. id Software supervised the license, Raven Software developed it.
05/07/2008 15:59
All Doom 3 did was take the formula from the first 2 games and put in nicer looking graphics, also gave it a story to, Doom was never anything mindblowing, it was just mindless and fun, exactly what Doom 3 was.
05/07/2008 16:06
Its good mindless fun, and then you got the multiplayer which is also fun as hell. Basic, but chaotic and fun when playing with lots of people. Just like the old ones ;D.

05/07/2008 16:12
05/07/2008 16:16
the problem was that Doom 3 could be summed up like this...
Enter empty room -> Step into specific area -> Monsters spawn (generally not a whole lot of them to make for a frantic battle) -> kill monsters -> proceed to next room.
Add in some 'sit in the dark waiting on flash light' once in a while and that's the game.

If id can improve upon their formula, I'll definitely buy the next one.
05/07/2008 17:27
The last few generations of ID games have felt more like tech demo's of their 3D engines than games designed to have fun being played.
05/07/2008 18:31
And doom 1 and 2 can be summed up as "Enter room, kill all demons, search for ammo, get key"
Rinse repeat till beat the game, Doom to me has never been anything super special, just something that's fun and mindless.

it's definitely gonna be multi-platform, since it will be on Rage/id Tech 5 Engine which is developed for the exact purpose of easy porting to ps3, xbox360, mac, linux from the base pc title.
also, they are looking for new blood because they dicided to have one Rage team, one Quake and one Doom team.
05/07/2008 19:11
perhaps that new engine will be utilized...

Ways in which the original DOOM was better than DOOM3, as demonstrated by that screen shot:
1) Wide-open environments that were more about running around wreaking havoc rather than creeping around playing whack-a-mole.
2) Not everything was dark. Yes, sometimes, visibility is important in a game.
3) Good ol' "what your grandpa used" shotgun - not some high-tech fake marine "shotgun" type thing. Just a good ol' wood and metal shotgun!
05/07/2008 20:31
I think the Doom formula still works amazingly well, problem is ID thought Doom was all about monsters and scary doors.
