Doom 4 rears its Hellish head, looking for fresh souls to bring it to life
Doom 4 rears its Hellish head, looking for fresh souls to bring it to life screenshot

The father of FPS games, id Software, has revealed that the legendary Doom franchise is getting a new sequel in Doom 4. The game is currently in production, though so far there is no word on formats or a release date (PC can be pretty much assured, though).

The studio behind Doom, Quake and Wolfenstein has declared, however, that it is looking for new talent to work on this new sequel. This is, in fact, how the game was announced -- a mere advertisment for talent, rather than some huge "WE CAN HAS DOOM" press release. How odd.

There are no details yet, but I wonder if this was the "bid daddy of secret AAA shooters" that I posted about only a few minutes ago that PSM3 promised to reveal next month. Remember how I said the Internet would have it first? That was bloody quick, even by Internet standards.

What do you reckon on this? Interested? I never got around to trying Doom 3, despite the average-to-great reviews. I really want to see Doom go back to its roots, with familiar enemies, settings and storyline all taking place in glorious hi-definition. That would make me very, very happy. Something about the re-imagined premise never quite sat well with me. Either way, I'm keeping on eye on this, and hopefully id does something to remind us why it was the FPS king -- it's certainly got a lot of competition these days.

Yes! I still need to finish doom 3 though. For the last month I've been playing the old school doom 1 and 2. And still I have as much fun on it as I did when I was a kid. It just shows how awes... -    view discussion

Oh sweet lord yes. I played a little Doom 3 - Fun, but not mindblowing like the original 2. Which I still play. Often. In fact, I'm gonna go do that right now.

I somewhat wish that developers would move on and stop trying to cash in on old franchises.

A new Doom along the lines of 1 or 2 would be a must buy, if it carried on the path of 3 I'd have to think twice. Either way I can't wait to have a look...

Doom 4: Bumpier, shinier, shadowier, concept artier, gunnier, Quake-ier!

They should bring it back to its roots of fun, arcady action. Ditch the moody, powerhouse stuff.

I still haven't played Doom 3... but the early Doom games are still amazing!

You hear that? That is the sound of me trying, but failing, to care. Doom 3 was meh and Quake 4 was appalling.
wonky360's Avatar
20-30 enemies on screen with open spaces is the ONLY way to go. I doubt this will be a success though, hope I am wrong.

" Something about the re-imagined premise never quite sat well with me."

I'm with you on that one. If you re-imagine something it should be called a remake not a sequel. I guess that's one thing Turok 08 got right(Of course they were mistaken by thinking we wanted it re-imagined in the first place).
ScottyG's Avatar
That was pretty funny timing. ^_^

You're honestly not missing much with DOOM 3. It has a few moments where it lapses back into the style of play the first two have, but for the most part it's a slow plodding survival horror game where your biggest enemies are your slow ass character and reloading your weapons.

DOOM and DOOM 2 were NOT about that, they were about fast paced and frantic action where the scares came from the fact that scores of enemies just appeared that could easily kill you if you let them. That, and effectively being able to kill things with a chainsaw. ^_^
skullivan's Avatar
They announced the new Wolfenstein game like 3 years ago and we have yet to even see a single screenshot so I guess we can expect Doom 4 in like 2012 for Xbox 720?

Doom 3 was enjoyable for the first 30 to 60 minutes.
After that it was just step forward, enemy pops up in scary way, shoot it while moving back, go back where I came from after killing it to get ammo and health I previously left behind, go back to spot where enemy appeared, step forward, enemy pops up, repeat.

All the enemies from previous games where there, but the way the levels were so cramped and the repetition really made that game seem like a chore to finish.

doom 3 was ok, but nothing more, I mean, it was supossed to compete with hl2 at the time. Of course hl2 was late until the end of the year i think...

I want some screenshots, but looking at the pace this thing is taking, probably in three more months... they are probably working on a new engine that will rape everything and aiming more to the consoles.

I don't want to see a remake of the original Doom, it was amazing by early '90s standards, today it would just bore the shit out of me. Get red key, get yellow key, get blue key. BFG, you win.

Make something fresh. I liked doom3 I played it on coop with a friend via xboxlan.

I might be in the minority here but I remember really liking Doom 3. Of course it's been a while since I've played it so my "Way Back Glasses" may be a little rosey.

Either way, I'd totally be on board for another trek into hell!

Not really interested right now, but after all it's Doom. Yeah, it's Doom, so we probably have to look at this title with nostalgia and all that stuff... but for me D3 and Q4 were a bit disappointing, anyway.

The original Doom is one of my favorite games of all time. When I was younger, it scared the crap out of me, today, while it no longer scares me, is still just as fun. When Doom 3 came out, it did feel much slower paced but it succeeded in creating the same scary ass feeling I got when playing the original as a child, so I loved it, it totally lived up to my expectations. Can't wait to hear more about Doom 4.
Logo's Avatar
I want a mix of Doom 1/2 and Doom 3.

At some points the game should keep with the scary atmosphere and jump-out-at-you gameplay of Doom 3 to surprise and shock the player but you can't do this all the time (like done in Doom 3) or it cheapens the effect. For that other portion I'd like to see fast paced combat against large numbers of enemies more akin to Doom 1/2. Also in the same note a more open flow of the levels that don't quite feel as on-rails as Doom 3 would be good.

Doom 4 could do well to borrow a little bit from Serious Sam in my opinion.

Commander Keen remake YES PLEASE.

Must stay 2D though, but incorporate current game play technology while staying fun, and respectful of the original series' style. Seriously that's not really asking too much, just holding back on the NEXT-GEN mentality.
Jetsetlemming's Avatar
You can expect a 360 version at least as well. ID's been joining the chorus of idiot development studios trying to claim the poor performance of their shitty games on piracy. They've actually claimed they lost 5 million sales of Quake 4 due to piracy. I wouldn't be too surprised if they went console-only down the line, Rage looks sort of console-y.

LOL, like the fact that Quake4's general play style is way past its prime had nothing to do with it. I loved quake 1,2, and 3 back in the day but things have changed a lot since then.
dyslixec's Avatar
doom 3 had its ups and downs, but man was it fun ;D. And btw, hell was the most beautiful level design evar :D, twisted and awesome in all ways. If you havent atleast made it through hell in doom 3, I highly suggest doing so, that was the prime time moment for doom 3.

Also I LOL @ throwing quake 4 in the mix with how well doom 3 was, it wasnt even made by the same company. id Software supervised the license, Raven Software developed it.
Kyousuke Nanbu's Avatar
I never got the hate for doom 3, people bash it and then in the same sentence praise doom 1 and 2.

All Doom 3 did was take the formula from the first 2 games and put in nicer looking graphics, also gave it a story to, Doom was never anything mindblowing, it was just mindless and fun, exactly what Doom 3 was.
dyslixec's Avatar
exactly kyousuke ;D, Go in with the mindset that there is not going to be anything to the level of half-life or bioshock in terms of the story. Go in with the mindset that you are there to blow demons up and see crazy shit!

Its good mindless fun, and then you got the multiplayer which is also fun as hell. Basic, but chaotic and fun when playing with lots of people. Just like the old ones ;D.
PaperBowser0's Avatar
Sweet! I can't wait, and I really want them to make this! :D :P
Vanilla Gorilla's Avatar
As long as it's not the survival horror type like Doom 3 was, this could be a good thing. Needs moar run and gun.
Logo's Avatar
kyousuke & dyslixec

the problem was that Doom 3 could be summed up like this...

Enter empty room -> Step into specific area -> Monsters spawn (generally not a whole lot of them to make for a frantic battle) -> kill monsters -> proceed to next room.

Add in some 'sit in the dark waiting on flash light' once in a while and that's the game.

Meh I must be the only one who liked Doom 3 and Quake 4...

I liked Doom 3 and Quake 4 too, but yeah, I did get a little bored of the whole spawning thing. First time it happened, it was BLOODY SCARY. After that, it was "oh again?"
RWarrior1CO's Avatar
I actually liked Doom 3. It was bloody, visceral, and it had one of the scariest moments I've ever experienced in a videogame. Plot was actually pretty good, too.

If id can improve upon their formula, I'll definitely buy the next one.
lostalaska's Avatar
I got Doom 3 when it came out, but was pretty much underwhelmed by it. The graphics were pretty at the time, but the game's pacing left me bored after a few hours. I remember a lot of talk about how it was supposed to be really scary. Yet, I found it to be predictable in the "scare" department and usually just amounted to cheap scares likeall the lights going off in hallway except for the one strobe light a raver had left in the hallway as demons on both ends of the hallway came pounding down the hall at you. Or the contrived attempt to add "suspense" with a "future flashlight" with horrendous battery power. I eventually gave up on the flashlight and did most my traveling by the light of shotgun blasts. I miss the insanely hectic days of Doom when you had tons of demons charging at you. Seems like the only game that has come close to "remaking" that style of game was creators of Serious Sam. Who went with more of an "arcady" experience.

The last few generations of ID games have felt more like tech demo's of their 3D engines than games designed to have fun being played.
Kyousuke Nanbu's Avatar
@Logo

And doom 1 and 2 can be summed up as "Enter room, kill all demons, search for ammo, get key"

Rinse repeat till beat the game, Doom to me has never been anything super special, just something that's fun and mindless.
Morrius's Avatar
I still think Doom 3 was a good game, providing you played it in the dark on drugs with aphex twins 'selected ambient works' playing over headphones. It was very boring played without these additions... Doom 4 might be cool, but ID aren't that relevant anymore are they?
sbshootme's Avatar
cba to read the comments, just to clarify:
it's definitely gonna be multi-platform, since it will be on Rage/id Tech 5 Engine which is developed for the exact purpose of easy porting to ps3, xbox360, mac, linux from the base pc title.

also, they are looking for new blood because they dicided to have one Rage team, one Quake and one Doom team.
cjpkiller's Avatar
i'm interested...
perhaps that new engine will be utilized...

Got bored of Doom 3 after a few hours. Not interested.
stevesan's Avatar
Wow. I COMPLETELY agree with that lol-image.

Ways in which the original DOOM was better than DOOM3, as demonstrated by that screen shot:

1) Wide-open environments that were more about running around wreaking havoc rather than creeping around playing whack-a-mole.

2) Not everything was dark. Yes, sometimes, visibility is important in a game.

3) Good ol' "what your grandpa used" shotgun - not some high-tech fake marine "shotgun" type thing. Just a good ol' wood and metal shotgun!
Boolean's Avatar
A lot of people said that Doom 3 failed because the gameplay of Doom is dead. I disagree, because while being very underwhelmed by Doom3, when I played the Doom2 mod for Doom3 it was the most adreneline pumping games I'd played in years.

I think the Doom formula still works amazingly well, problem is ID thought Doom was all about monsters and scary doors.
Velt's Avatar
Miodd got it, when I was young i remember that the first doom was scary. With doom 3 it felt scary but because of the "buh!" factor... you know, im wandering around the level thinking "its been too long since something pop out right in front of me..."
