Doom 3 source code to go public after lawyer clearance photo

The impending release of Doom 3's source code has been teased by id Software's John Carmack, who says the company is merely waiting on "final lawyer clearance for release."

While id Tech 4 may be showing its age -- Doom 3 launched in 2004, after all -- it's still being used by mainstream games and one can only imagine what homemade wonders will come out of the engine going open source. Patience, people.

a thousand times yes. I learn so much more from these kinds of things than any of my programming classes

Brink looks beautiful with IdTech 4.

Which reminds me...I gotta beat this game.

Same thing happened with id Tech 3 shortly after Doom 3 was released, I've been waiting for this since then.

I'm curious about the legality of this kind of thing. Lets say Telephis skips programming class and uses idTech 4 to somehow make a first person shooter adaptation of The Notebook. Yeah, I dunno either but lets just say he pulls it off and it's awesome and I want a copy. Is he legally allowed to sell it to me and profit from it, or does he have to give it away because he used an open source engine?

@Tristix

That would be perfectly legal, it is Open Source, after all.

@ Tristrix: I think it might work a bit like the UDK, where a certain percentage goes back to id if he were to sell it.

@ Tristrix

It would be legal. The engine he'd be using would be open source, but all the art assets, storyline, voice work, etc. would still be his work to own and sell.

I'm a technical noob, so could someone explain to me the difference between making a mod and Open Source?

Using the Open Source code would allow you to create an entirely new game with the same engine, and the end user wouldn't require owning the original game to play it.

If it's under the GPLv2 license like the Quake 3 source, then probably yes he can give his game to you for free or for sales. BUT ... he has to give you the source code, along with any modifications to it, to you as well.

That the rule for GPLv2.

If he wants to keep the source code private, he can get a normal license from id, for a fee of course.

@wanderingpixel

To mod is to alter a game. You can pass around your mod but the people will obvious need the game in order to use your mod.

When id open sources it's engines, what they are doing is giving away the ENTIRE game engine - minus the art, music ... etc. You can do what you will with the code with certain restrictions based it's license which in this case is the GPLv2.

The GPLv2 requires that if you make any changes to the source code and distribute the resulting program, you MUST distribute the modified source code free of charge as GPLv2 as well.

That's my understand of GPLv2 anyway.

I read a great book about when id were starting up, I think it was called Masters of Doom but was just awesome to read all these stories about the games you grew up playing.
If your into that kind of thing, you should check it out.

Anyone who doesn't think this matters because the game's dated should look up Sikkmod and the Wulfen texture pack. You can make this engine look almost as good as iD Tech 5 with some tweaks.

But that problem is, this is just good news, for the people that actually know how to code right?
The rest just as to stand by and let it pass us by and droll about the possibilites.
