Doom 2 on its way to XBLA photo

Doom has long been available for download on 360 consoles. On the floor at Quakecon, people have been seeing that the classic game's sequel is going to receive similar treatment. id hasn't made the official announcement as of the time of this writing, but it looks to only be a matter of time before Doom II hits the Live Arcade service.

People who purchase the game on XBLA will be getting an entirely new episode to play and there will be four-player splitscreen play in addition to an online multiplayer component.

When originally released in 1994, Doom II did not have any startling changes to the formula, using the same graphics and really only adding some new enemy types to populate the campaign and a double-barreled shotgun. It was, however, a nice refinement on the original and is the better game in my opinion. I skipped out on the original Doom, but I'm liable to pick this one up. How about you?

Doom is one of those games that doesn't age well. I skipped the first one, probably gonna do the same with this.

I bought the first Doom immediately when it released on XBLA, and I loved every bit as much when I first played it on my Apple so many years ago. I'll definitely be picking this up.

@TheDreadHawk

I have to disagree, DOOM aged pretty damn well and with the streamlined controls and online coop/deathmatch it's by far one of the best XBLA purchases you can make.

Doom still takes the cake when it comes to adrenaline pumping action. I can't think of one game that surpasses it besides Serious Sam, but SS lacks something that makes Doom the best FPS of all time.

I'll definetly be buying this one. I have all the old school FPSs on XBLA; Doom, Marathon, Duke Nukem, Wolfenstein....this will just be another one for the collection.

I didn't play much of Doom II. I loved Doom 1, and Wolfenstein 3d. Maybe later they'll release Quake.

Playing this game now is like going back a park you visited as a kid and punting the swan that used to bite you.

You can't scare me anymore crazy spider things!!

Tempting, but I'll probably pass. I would like to see the original Quake (Open-GL enhanced version) ported to XBLA - that one I'd snap up quick-like. My favorite rocket-jumper game of all time.

Wish they'd used the Doomsday Engine on the first. It added so much: 3d models, MP3 and CD music, fog and rain FX, 44khz sounds (originals were 11khz) with upsampling for the old set, skyboxes, mouselook, jumping, and everything seen in Heretic and Hexen. Indeed, you can run Doom, Ultimate Doom, Shareware Doom, Doom2, Heretic, AND Hexen from the same .EXE if you set things up right.

iD should pull a Portal and hire the entire Doomsday Engine team to crank these classics up to 11. Once the eyecandy hits your retinas, it's like playing for the first time all over again.
