Don't like in-game ads? Mercenaries 2 lets you blow that sh*t up

Don't like in-game ads? Mercenaries 2 lets you blow that sh*t up photo
     Ads

I don’t really have a problem with advertisements and product placements showing up in something like a free, browser-based game. I only tend to play them a few times anyway, so the ads don’t normally have a chance to get on my nerves. Ads in full retail games, on the other hand, are a totally different matter -- especially after I already paid $50-$60 for it. Having my immersion repeatedly ruined by a bunch of Army recruitment billboards and Pepsi posters strewn wily nily about the environment can really tick me off.

Therefore, my first reaction upon hearing that Pandemic’s Mercenaries 2: World in Flames will have dynamic ad containing billboards was one of insurmountable rage. And I’d just gotten so hyped up over the recent footage. Bummer.

Lead designer Scott Warner was quick to explain that, while Mercenaries 2 will have ads, they will at least be implemented with some manner of creativity (if you consider explosions to be creative that is).

“There’s a faction in the game that actually doesn’t like the fact that the first world is coming in and plastering their cities with advertising, so they’ll actually pay you to blow up billboards. So if you’re like, “goddamn it, the Mercs guys put advertising in the game,” you can just blow it up.”

I don’t like in-game advertising, but I do like blowing stuff up. Oh well, I guess I can let it slide this time, Pandemic. So how do you feel about in-game advertising? Does the thought of blowing some up excite you too?

I don't even notice them in Burnout Paradise. Only one I ever noticed was Speed Racer. Can't say I care.

I pretty much don't give a damn about in-game ads, but that's a sly way to appeal to the people against it. Well done Pandemic.

I think as long as the ads fit within the context of the game, like various billboard ads in Skate or movie & game ads in R6:Vegas, that in-game ads are ok. In cases like that, I actually kind of think that the ads enhance the realism.

Also, when characters have phones, PDAs, or whatever and they're a certain name brand, that's cool with me too.

As soon as I start playing a game like Oblivion though and they start putting Doritos ads in the sky on flying dragons...... I have to draw the line at stuff like that.

I think in a game such as Mercs it would have REALLY stood out if billboards and buildings with ads couldn't be destroyed. Not implementing them believably within the gameplay would have stuck out more to me than the ads themselves.

What a douche-cunt... trying to make it sound like they're creating a middle-road when in actuality this is just a ploy to get people to pay more attention to the billboards whilst making them think that Pandemic's being cool by letting us blow them up.

I think it would be awesome if they kept track of the stats on the destruction of the advertising pieces.

Pepsi, your ads were destroyed 1.2 million times last month.

McDonalds, your ads were destroyed 5 million times. People really don't like your ads!

Krispy Kremes, your ads were only destroyed 100 times. People must like donuts.

I don't mind real ads in games, so long as it doesn't get in the way of the game. A truck or sign has Pepsi on it in a game that takes place in a realistic world? Fine by me, as that can actually add to the realism.

As for being able to blow them up? Fucking sweet. Even more realistic, if you ask me.

I'd have no problem with in-game ads if they were integrated smoothly into the game (i.e. they fit in the game), and they made the game cheaper (seriously, what are they for if not to make it cheaper for me??).

This is a crafty way of making sure there's greater focus on the ads than there would be if you were just going past it. If anything this makes adverts even more prominent and in your face.

It'd be funny if advertisements parodied real world products, like in GTA. Not so funny when the developer is still getting paid to do it and not passing along the benefit to the end user. I'll be pirating my copy, safe in the knowledge it's been paid for by Pepsico.

I could care less...I'm not a drone, I make decisions based on what I want, not what a marketer tells me what I want...This is just a form of communication. I'd rather it out of the games...but if they are keeping it in then by all means they should lower the prices of games because of the revenue brought in on the adveritising factors.

I hate advertisements of any kind in any place, ESPECIALLY in my videogames. I don't care if I can blow them up, just the fact that they're there pisses me off. Also, I don't see how they fit in the Mercenaries game world. The developers obviously don't care about the fiction of their game if they're going to have Pepsi and Nike ads in the middle of a goddamn warzone.

I liked the fact that Snake had an ipod in MGS4. I actually had a good laugh because you can use it and it works like a real one. Other than that, I normally think in-game ads are balls.

I hate ads in games when they hinder the game. If theres a huge sidebar of advertisements its annoying but simple in game advertisements that are as subtle as a billboard don't really bother me. This game looks to be shaping up well and I am very excited for it, especially blowing everything up.

@Stetsonblade : Gamers have to pay full retail then deal with these ads and reek none of the benifits. The games are still just as expensive and I imagine the publishers pocket the profits so even the developers get screwed.

Now when I have to deal with ingame ads for a free DLC map then thats a different story.

They're only doing it to make you pay more attention to the ads, don't be dumbasses.

Really, come on - if the rest of the game is destructible as claimed then it would be bullshit to not allow for the destruction of billboards, they're only doing what you'd expect and then wrapping it up with fancy paper and a bow. But they're now sticking it in a "plot" line to make sure you focus on them. Not cool.

It'll be acceptable if the ads fit in with the setting, but if they stick out like a sore thumb then there isn't a hope in hell of me buying the game.

@D-nez: Yeah, but games cost more to make. They have to be ported to two consoles this gen, which raises costs more. Then on top of that developers of the big budget games have to compete for a smaller market share with more competitors than ever before.

I disagree with 'letting it slide this time'. It's 'thin end of the wedge' stuff. In game advertising is bullshit unless it decreases the price point of the game. I will not be buying mercs regardless of the destructible nature of advertising. This is a practice that should be discouraged.

Alright, this is pretty fucking awesome. I hate ads, and I refuse to play a game that features them. But c'mon, it's kinda genius to get companies to pay for advertising, only to reward the player for blowing it the fuck up. This is like having your cake and eating it too.

I'm sold.

Watch the last video (linked in the post) and you can actually see the RPG guy blow up a placeholder billboard that says "Massive" and has resolution specs on it - that will be a real ad, come the final game.

Personally I don't mind in-game ads, in fact I think it was pretty cool to see an ad in Crackdown for the Legendary pack or an ad for Future Weapons in Rainbow Six: Vegas. But games like Fight Night and Madden....yeah...TOO much ads!
But either way blowing up ads sounds awesome! what better way to say "ads stink!" than to blow them up!:)
