Destructoid is gaming news, community, videos, and sometimes love. Take the tour or jump in with Facebook:

Little-known fact: despite the upswing of next-gen hardware, a few great games are still waiting in the wings for the PS2. For those of you still deeply entrenched in last-gen or just looking for some, y'know, games to play on that PS3, Atlus' Odin Sphere is due out on May 22nd, and looks to be shaping up pretty damn well. This video, courtesy of Famitsu, showcases the game's stunning 2D sprite-based beauty and a taste of its action RPG gameplay. If it plays half as well as it looks, we should be in for a wild ride.

wow that game looks orignaly sik!... I want to get it and play it on my PS3 to see that animation look its best!

looks like the sprite artists modeled some characters in 3D then converted the animation into sprites... im wow'ed. I was like meh, looks shitty of the beginning but once it gets into the fantasy.... nice!

Oh how I love 2D. We need more 2D games with big sprites.

If the gameplay is anywhere near as good as the aesthetic, this will be an absolute winnar. Also, really nice song playing in the first half of the trailer. I sincerely hope this gets an EU release, but I fear that it shan't.

For the record, ps2 > (ps3 + wii + 360) in the only way it matters: games.

At least it'll be here before the a PC version of Puzzle Quest... then again, I might have a 360 by then anyway.

Is it like ulimeted sega where the game allows you pick a character at the begining and each character's story is linked to the other stories

or is it just one mass party
just wondering

@wario67

It's a side-scroller. I guess the only thing I could compare it to would be Maple Story except the difference is that this doesn't suck. There are five people and you go through each person's story one at a time as far as I can tell.

This game looks great... i loved penny-arcade's reaction...
Tyco: "What is this feeling? i'm tingling inside"
Gabe: "i don't know, joy maybe?"
Tyco: "it burns ussss"

Ah, yet ANOTHER reason to hold off on getting a wii/360/PS3...
Really... between the games i have yet to play and the few new ones that are coming out on the PS2, it will be awhile before i really feel the need for next-gen...

This game makes me want to buy a PlayStation 2.... no seriously, I'm the last human on Earth not to own one and FINALLY I'm considering it. Maybe one more price drop, an even $100 price tag.

Atlus make/translate good games. In the US.

PAL gamers? Not so lucky. I might have to acquire this through nefarious means. Sigh.

So, how long until the 17th?

Jeeze, can you believe it? We are finally on the verge of stylized carton games that actually look like the cartoons. And on the PS2!!! can you imagine what this game COULD look like n the newer systems! I loved the style of Wind Waker, and with Odin Sphere, We may actually be able to play a cartoon. Beautiful. Just beautiful

They did a complete rewrite for the American version of this, so there wouldn't be any translation weirdness. I'm excited.
