Don't get rid of your PS3 Netflix disc anytime soon photo

While the knowledge that those Netflix Instant Watch discs for streaming movies on PlayStation 3 aren't permanent isn't new, the notion that the disc-less embedded application won't be out until "late next year" is. Well, "kind of" -- I mostly just wanted an excuse to post this picture from The Dark Crystal.

After checking in with Netflix VP of corp. communications Steve Swasey (longest title ever), G4TV found out that "using the disc" is how we'll have to watch movies on our PS3s until "late next year." Ouch. Here I was thinking that a dedicated app would be appearing on PSN in the very near future.

Based on speculation, which sounds pretty darn believable (and accurate), the discs are necessary until Microsoft's exclusivity deal with the Netflix runs out. If true, there's probably next to nothing the company can do to expedite the process. Oh well.

How's Netflix streaming on PS3 been treating you for the time being?

Still having toruble giving a damn, until Netflix becomes available in more countries why is Sony even wasting time on this? The bulk of the PS3 install base cannot ever use it.

I think this has much to do with the contract with Microsoft.
And the solution with a streaming disc is just to give the PS3 a new feature on the "it only does everything" list.
It's all about not giving people reason to buy a 360.

I like the interface ALOT more, however there isn't the swiftness that the Xbox Netflix has. PS3 has the huge advantage of having wifi that isn't 100 dollars, so I can finally watch it upstairs. Theres also the fact that my family hates using controllers and much prefers remotes. So we use the bluetooth PS3 remote now, works great. Our universal remote worked with the 360 but the 360's infared is AWFUL.

I used it to watch the classic and timeless "Never Back Down." The quality was...ok but from my experience the streaming quality has never been anything more than just OK. It did have to stop and buffer (or as they call or "retrieve movie") about five times. This was never longer than 10 seconds and it pretty much picked up where it left off. No complaints here. I just dont use streaming very often because the DVD/Blu Ray's i get from them look WAY better, and I'm an A/V whore (more A then V, but still...when I can see the compression blocks on the video...) All in all, its the same as streaming from my PC. The interface on the disc is fast, once it connects. I'm glad I have it.

I haven't had any problems. However, as stated, the quality isn't always the best. My only complaint would be having to go back to the menu to play the next episode in a series. I'm not sure if that's how they do it on 360s as well, but I know computer streaming is sequential with no backing out.

I'm enjoying it so far. The old-timey disc reminds me of when you would have to go out to physically rent movies. I'm a luddite so this is a perfect transition tool for me...

It is a small price to pay for Netflix on the PS3. Sure, it'd be more convenient without the discs, but what are you gonna do, right?

Netflix was moneyhatted by Microsoft. Hence the reason they went Silverlight and everything else MS related. Part of the deal was obviously console exclusivity. The only way Netflix has around that is to ship a BD Profile 2.0 application which you insert into the PS3 and play. I think Sony could help Netflix and help themselves by defining an extension to profile 2.0 that allows applications to install and run from storage. After all, BD-J is just Java so there is no technical reason this couldn't be done, and it should be done given the huge potential it would offer. Every enabled BD player (which includes the PS3) would suddenly be able to run apps to watch YouTube, Netflix, Amazon streaming, weather, news, calculators, calendars, maps etc. etc. It is amazing it hasn't been done given the possibilities.

I don't mind it. It's kinda like switching to watch a DVD or Blu.

The disc really doesn't seem like it would be a huge deal to me. Yeah, something on the hard drive would be best, but what does the core of Netflix business run of off? Oh yeah, insertable discs! Also, it's not like a new disc has to be inserted for every movie.

Still, late 2010 is a surprise.

I don't mind the idea of the disk, and in some ways, I like the idea of physically "popping in a couple thousand movies at once," but the experience isn't any better than my parents' built-in Netflix streaming on their DVD player. That isn't exactly a vouch for quality. But using the disk is the least of the complaints with the PS3 streaming.

I'll continue using the streaming on my 360. Oddly enough, I can't get HD movies to stream in HD on the PS3, but I can consistently on the 360. Its faster, and the interface is just plain better on the 360 version as it stands. Another odd quirk, the cover art loads slower on the PS3, but look MUCH crisper than those on the 360 menus.

...LATE next year? Yeesh

I'd have them use a disc permanently if it will keep another useless icon off my XMB.

Of course if they'd just give me the option of turning off these icons to nowhere, I'd be fine with that too.

This is new news? This was in the original press release and even on Sonys blog. Did Destructoid just fall prey to the thing they accuse many readers of? Not reading the article. Heh.

I was actually disappointed with the streaming quality on the PS3. I tried watching the same show in HD on the 360 and PS3. It was noticeably better looking on the 360. Maybe that was a fluke. The interface on the PS3 is nice and the disc isn't a big deal. Initially, I was bummed I had renewed my gold account for another year when I heard streaming was coming to the PS3. But in my experience it's worth paying for on the 360 because it looked so much better. Still, the PS3 version isn't bad. If I didn't have a 360, I'd be happy to stream for no additional cost on the PS3.

The fact that the PS3 doesn't have a built in scaler for 480p rears its ugly head whenever I watch stuff on it. No upscaling to 1080i. I wonder what 720p capable users see...

Ugh, whatever. I'm used to being part of the bastard child PS3 owners lot.

I do know that the interlaced 480 content looks freaking awful. I don't know if they access separate files for the streaming PS3 vs 360, but if they do, they need to fix it ASAP. The interlacing on Penn & Teller's Bullshit makes it damn near unwatchable, which will probably be the case for a lot of older movies and Video-shot TV shows.

Wasting time? I don't think that majority was or is bring put into it.

Netflix said "Hey can we make moar money using your console?"

Sony said "Sure but no toting around with our code bitch."

Netflix "But it'd be more convienent if..."

And Sony replied "NO BITCH, NO!"

At least I'm guessing that's how it went down.

True. But other countries have different services similar to Netflix. If this idea of "content-free" BD app takes a place, then I can see more companies using it and BD-live can take a foot hold as well.

For some reason, on the same HDTV, when I used Netflix on both 360 or PS3, the picture has been sharper for 360.

Of course, I was watching Desperate Housewives, so a sharper picture is debatable if it was a blessing or a curse.

I'm diggin' it. Just one more thing I can do on my PS3! I will say that I hope they fix the browsing configuration sooner than later. Having to log onto my NF account to Que stuff up I can't just browse for on NFPS3 is a bit of a drag. Still bad ass though.

I've only watched 1 movie so far, but the quality was pretty horrible. The menu was also horribly built and extremely clunky.

I think the quality has something to do with your viewing choice. I've tried a few and noticed the more recent TV series come in looking real nice in HD, but an older movie appears only as good as the print transfered to DVD or whatever, in which case it looks less than stellar on an HDTV. Still I love having this on the PS3 now!

Haha watched that movie for the first time just a few weeks ago, amazing how awesome it still is despite being over 30 years old. I cant believe how much of it was ripped off and put in World of Warcraft, guess Blizzard were huge fans.
