What is it about isometric viewpoints, classic franchises, and role-playing games? They seem to fit so well together! This perplexing equation worked wonders for classic Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars and now seems to be continuing with upcoming DS game Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood.

I am not getting my hopes up just yet, though. We all know how Sonic’s last outing in the isometric universe turned out (three words: throw-up on bread). Luckily, something about this new trailer makes me (cautiously?) optimistic that Sonic’s foray into hit points and heal potions could turn out well.

Maybe it’s the fact that the trailer gives me a Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga vibe (definitely a good thing)? Maybe it is the fact that the game is made my RPG masters BioWare? Maybe it is the fact that the music is on a Puzzle Quest level of overdramatic, epic proportions? Whatever the reason, Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood seems to have some potential.

What do you think? Does this trailer get you at least a little excited for a Sonic RPG, or were you done with the hyper blue hedgehog ages ago?

The last time Sonic went isometric was Sonic 3D Blast....
Hopefully this will be better than that.

Who knows. This could be good. It might be the first Sonic game I enjoy in a long time.

Wasn't it done by the Bioware B-team (which is still infinitely better than JoWood)?

Still, this might be the one game that makes me want to buy a DS.

Over 10 characters? I don't want that many characters in a sonic game.

Hey I work at Bioware, definitely not the B-team doing our DS stuff, so mean! Some of our most experienced most hard-core talent worked on this title.

Hope you guys enjoy it, give it a chance!

Disclamer - I didn't work on Sonic though I would have loved to...DS so tasty...nom nom.

If you really work at Bioware, I'm glad that the rumors were false and I'm sorry for almost believing them :)

Pleaaase give us tasty bits of info on your cblog some time, Kitae! When will you ruin my life with delicious KOTOR MMO or KOTOR3?

Isn't it kind of sad that the game that potentially saves Sonic is not made by Sonic team?

Actually, it's kind of hilarious.

But seriously, Sonic Team could solve half its problems if it just fixed the control scheme in its games. The little guy doesn't have to rocket right off of a cliff every time I nudge the analog stick, you know.

This probably won't be an issue for the DS RPG, though. Speed looks a lot more manageable.

Sonic 3D blast wasn't that bad. Then again, I was six when it came out and I could probably have loads of fun playing with an apple core. Regardless, I have good memories of that game (and, on a side note, even better memories of Sonic 3 & Knuckles...)

I really only planned on buying like 1 more game for my DS (Chrono Trigger) I have changed my mind. If I would have seen the ad I would have been like PSHHHHH. But because of your words Chad, I now am buying 2 more ds games.
