Don't Cry: Devil May Cry 4 to be a bit kinder, says producer photo

Kinder? Maybe, but don't expect the upcoming PS3 and Xbox 360 game to be any easier than the controller-crushing Devil May Cry 3. Producer Hiroyuki Kobayashi tells Eurogamer in a recent interview that Devil May Cry 4 may be a bit easier to get along with, but she's still a tough bitch.

"We had to learn a lesson there, actually, because DMC3 was really difficult. What we found was that people sometimes lost interest within the first two hours because the game just wasn't giving them any chance whatsoever," said Kobayashi.

"So DMC4 will be about same difficulty level, but we thought that we would be a little bit kinder to the player, so we're going to give a step-by-step guide on how to use the weapons and skills so that you should naturally progress to a better skill level a little more easily than in DMC3."

Kobayashi also openly invites newcomers to the franchise, saying that it is fine to start out with Devil May Cry 4

"Anyone who hadn't played the DMC franchise could start off with number 4. There have actually been people who aren't all that familiar with the series who've played DMC4 and thought that Nero was Dante. Another interesting thing is that if you start off with DMC4, you'll obviously encounter Dante, and if you want to know more about him you could go back and play the previous titles."

Check out the full interview at Eurogamer.

good, I'd like to see some more games with some ramped up diffculty. Started playing Phantasy Star and the game is insanely hard because of the lack there of clues to where to go to next but I just never bothed to look for stuff around or pay more attention to what is being said to me by NPCs in the almost 20 year game. Fun as shit tho.. Never played DMC but my buddies tell me i would enjoy the steep difficulty it has. Good for capcom for not dumbing down the game.. HADOKEN!

People thought Nero was Dante? It doesn't have anything to do with the simple fact that they look almost identical?

I'm glad they are not stripping the game of its difficulty. Part of my love for the DMC series is that it doesn't hesitate to kick your ass.

Yeah I dont understand why the hell they made him loook IDENTICAL and then they stress that

"NERO IS NOT DANTE. HOW COURD YOU NOT TERR!?! RORZ!! WE ASIANS ARR ROOK DIFFERENT! I MEAN ROOK AT CHANG AND WONG! THEY ROOK SO DIIFERENT! THEY EVEN GO TO SAME BARBER AND THEY ROOK DIFFERENT!!"

Alright thats enough racist remarks for the day.

But uh, DMC3 wasnt hard at all, I mean you get unlimited ammo for crissake. If you just happen to have Carpel Tunnel Syndrome then thats your problem.

I don't think DMC3 was difficult in that sense... I think there must just be stupid gamers out there. *looks at Madden sales for every year ever* Yep.. stupid...

What version of DMC3 did you guys play? The original release or the $20 special edition with Vergil playable. There is a big difference between the two. The original release did not have any save points, so if you croaked you would have to do the whole level over again. As per the greatest hits/special edition you had save points where you could continue from them.

I thought the game was pretty hard. Not in the unfair-kick-your-ass-hard, but hard so that if you died, it was your fault. Changing your tactic and concentrating more on your reflexes usually got me through tough boss fights. I played the original version though, not the SE version.

I played the special edition and you actually had a choice of which continue style you want to use.

If you select the Gold style, you can restart from where you died at the cost of a Gold orb, or just restart at the checkpoint infintely.

If you select the Yellow style, you can restart from a checkpoint if you have a Yellow orb, otherwise, it's back to the beginning of the level.

I liked Yellow.

I also like getting pounded in the face with 2x4s. I'm a mess.

It's a game where you mash buttons over and over and over and over and over again while watching cool effects.... how much harder or easier could it be?

They sound like Nintendo with that "anyone can play it" part.

DMC3 wasn't that hard.

"now Bujingai: the Forsaken City... that is HARD "

Bujingai ROCKED!!! Totally underrated. I just went back and played through a second time the other week. As far as difficulty though, I think only the Sky Palace at the end with the precision jumping gave me big trouble.

Man I loved that game.

Pussies! I beat DMC 3 blindfolded with both my hands tied behind my back while being tortured by 25 drug addled psychotic ninjas...

Actually, I think its fine for games to have a level of difficulty as long as you give the players a choice. For example, Ninja Gaiden Black gave you the opportunity to play in the Ninja Dog difficulty and "Rewarded" you by giving you a red ribbon/badge of shame to wear. Bastards!!! I am HARDCORE I beat Battle Toads on a single life while 8 dudes were squirting lemon juice and tabasco in my eye AND punching me in the nads...

I finished DMC 1 and 2 without a hitch but I definately had to work a bit harder to beat DMC3... I like a challenge but that was just a little over the top.

I've actually started to play the series over again, though I admit, I am a bit rusty, lol.

I agree, having different and verying degrees of difficulty would have been much more player-friendly.

Can't wait to get my hands on this title though!

Good. Frankly, DMC is one of those "hard for the sake of hard" deals where they're just showing off. I don't agree with that philosophy, or people who think hard automatically = awesome. That's elitist nonsense.

Glad they didn't back down, games like DMC are meant to be hard, if you don't like it GTFO. I practically destroyed my PS2 controller playing DMC3, but I had a blast. As long as its hard on a skill basis instead of hard on a "the game is cheating basis" then its all good. One of the main reasons I like Itagaki is that he basically says, "If you think it is too hard, too bad, don't play the game then." I wish he had just done a tutorial instead of Ninja Dog.

DMC3 was definately insanely difficult on DMD. But the normal and hard and very hard were quite manageable. I gave up on DMD cause it was just too hard though. Cause i played DMC1 and 2. 1 was pretty damn tough but not cheaply tough (well Dmc3 is'nt too cheap either). But i had a ton of fun with 1. 3 won DMD was just sorta meh. Well i hope DMC4 is more like 1 in that its fun even when you spend 5 hours dying 50 times to an ugly blob.

This is okay. It could be worse.

*Alright Dante, please carry this bouquet and give it to your enemies.
*Can I cut their heads off after I give them the flowers?
*NO!

I like hard games but they don't need to be hard just for the sake of being hard. I still like DMC.
