While watching this GameTrailers exclusive trailer for Prizefighter, I was trying really hard to forget that the game's developer, Venom Games, were responsible for last-gen's Rocky and Rocky Legends. While not exactly terrible games, both games were competing head-to-head with EA Chicago's Fight Night games, and the results weren't pretty.
But with EA Chicago on the outs, and no official word on a new Fight Night game, 2K's Prizefighter looks like it may be the only option to control digital pugilists in the near future. However, it's impossible to note how Prizefighter doesn't look as good as Fight Night Round 3, a game that was released on the Xbox 360 in early 2006, not long after the console's release, when developers were still getting familiar with the hardware.
Don't get me wrong; the game looks OK in action, and I like the focus on character progression and career building. But come June 2008 when the game hits the Xbox 360, I'm pretty sure gamers are going to be expecting a bit more than videos of a rambling Don King, so I'm hoping they bring strong gameplay to the plate. I'm going to withhold final judgment, though, because I'm still itching to play the game; I can't be the only one, can I?
"spectaculocity" God I love ridiculous word-smithing.
I'm interested only because I absolutely loved every incarnation of Fight Night and EA apparently has left the fans of that series with no hope for more. Depending on the control scheme (not a button masher) and reviews (it has sound - 11/10) I might pick this up.
If only Don King and his unabridged fictional vocabulary had been paid to do in-game commentary. *sigh*
Seeing people get punched in this game versus Fight Night, Fight Night blows it out of the water. The animations in Fight Night are way far beyond this. That's mostly what gets you into Fight Night in the first place, and that's not being shallow. The graphics in Fight Night and the controls work together and dropping one completely destroys a great experience.
If these guys are going to try and make a game like Fight Night where you don't have a health bar, they're going to need to work on this game a lot better than this. The whole point of not having a health bar was because it was silly in boxing. Fight Night's graphics let you use the actual boxers as health bars by looking at how they were behaving and how badly damaged their face was. This doesn't seem like it could do that. Not as well, anyway.
The in game commentary sounds kinda bleh, and the graphics are a little below the bar Fight Night set, but I'm still keeping an eye on this. Those side step moves look interesting, and the training minigames seem like a nice addition however overused they might be.
And there hasn't been a boxing game released in two years. So yeah
I've got to say FN3 is one of the best games on 360. What I can't believe is that EA, the franchise whore, has dropped one of their best ones. Has anyone got a source/quote as to why they're not doing this anymore?
