I can't say I've ever heard of this before, but if you have, speak up. A PlayStation 3 owner found something very interesting in his slideshow mode: The PS3 knows where the faces are. Creepy? Kinda. But imagine the possibilities if such a capability exists.

I've noticed something like this with my Wii... Not sure if it does the exact same thing.

The real question is why does this guy have pictures of Bush and Lindsay Lohan on his PS3?

I've had a few slideshows running and I've never noticed anything like this at all. Then again, I don't have as many promo shots of syndicated TV shows, world leaders, and Lindsay Lohan as this guy.

@c--b: Actually, I wouldn't be surprised if face recognition technology is just part of the PS3 dev kit. A lot of software for digital movie cameras support it, albiet with varying degrees of success.

Whats so hard face detection, I'm sure its pretty easy to make some algorithms for detecting faces. Would be more impressed if it's recognized faces and told you who it was, like those surveillance cameras in London.

It's really not so much face recognition, it's that it recognizes 'important' features of the picture. I've seen the Wii do the same thing. When doing a slideshow of my Christmas photos, it would pan on bodies. Additionally, it seemed to like to pan towards my Christmas tree top. This leads me to believe that this (if anything like the Wii's slideshow) is able to pick out large shapes that could potentially be human, and then zooms/pans towards the top of the 'body'.

Try doing a slideshow with pictures of inanimate objects. I'm willing to bet that it zooms in on whatever the largest object in the picture is.

I actually do not think it is "face detection" as much as it is choosing the area of highest contrast to the background. Which in most cases, where a person is the subject of a photograph, their face would be that area.

Face detection is available in nicer point and shoot digital cameras. It recognizes the eyes and nose since they are the most prominent features of the face. You can see it on the Canon SD800is when you look at someone's face. A tiny box will follow it around on the lcd screen.

On a side note. At the Circuit City where I work, the store got to vote for a new console for the break room. The votes ended thusly. PS3 6 votes. Xbox 360 17 votes. Wii 18 votes.
I was so mad. I already have a wii, and I was hoping to have Gears of War waiting for me on my lunch break. >:(

Canon have been using this technology for ages. Look at the canon zoombrowser software you get free with your canon cameras it has a slideshow feature.

And yes as above the newer point and shoot digital cameras like the Ixus 800IS & 900TI (for us euro's) have auto focus face detection.

Yes, i too work in retail :(
