Does Manhunt 2 make the mentally ill look bad?

Does Manhunt 2 make the mentally ill look bad? photo
     Manhunt

He might be several weeks late to the party, but that's not stopped National Alliance on Mental Illness executive director Mike Fitzpatrick claiming himself a slice of the outrage pie. Outrage pie is delicious, after all, with a side of controversy bread and an ice-cold glass of reaction. The NAMI bigwig has accused Manhunt 2 of reinforcing negative stereotypes of the mentally ill by casting protagonist Daniel Lamb as an escaped mental patient.

Now, there are many things you can criticize the Manhunt series for -- namely for being a rubbish franchise -- but I wouldn't have expected someone to pull the "mental illness" card, that's a new one. Fitzpatrick claims that Rockstar makes millions of dollars through "stigmatizing" mental illness and that mental illness shouldn't be made fun of in this way, since we don't mock cancer or heart attacks in games.

This comes down to intent. I don't think anybody playing Manhunt 2 would be laughing at mental illness ... well ... maybe on the part of the developers, but certainly not the fictional headcase seen in-game. It certainly doesn't mock mental illness anymore than TV shows like South Park do. The only difference here is that Manhunt 2 is the current hot potato, so why not jump aboard and ride it like a rocket-powered camel?

What do you think, dear readers? Does Manhunt 2 reflect poorly on mentally ill people? Who in their right mind (no joke intended) would view this game as a representation of genuine mental illness in the first place? Do you, like me, find Fitzpatrick's comments just a little bit misguided, however good-hearted, and agree that this is only an issue to those going out of their way to look for the problem?

The godawful pickings hadn't even gone on to make it purple! Christ, why would they bombard Manhunt 2 with any shambling semblance of a fact?! The problem with society today is that everyone's too damn Memphis for their own good! Look at Jimmy Buffet! In his heyday he was called the "Guido from Toledo" but did that ever stop him?! Of course not! Ppph. Bagels.

Fitzpatrick's comments seem to be misguided. I wonder if he has played the game? I might play this game someday.

Manhunt 2 is blatantly based in a nonrealistic world. Never once when playing the game would somebody think any more poorly upon mentally ill patients. Yeah, teh main character is "mentally ill". But like, he was kind of brainwashed and trained to be a murderer. There is a major difference between reality and Manhunt 2.

I don't feel manhunt does more than other media. Mental illness is something that few can comprehend and so they tend to stick to glorified, and often violent, examples. I feel that mental illess gets associated to extreme examples like Ed Gein or the Jack the Ripper or the crazed homeless man yelling and waving his phallus on the street corner (I love Seattle.) It seems most people hear "Mental Illness" and think paranoid schizophrenia. The western world looks for the sensational as opposed to the rational, so I doubt much will change.
So yes, manhunt does add a negative perspective to the concept of mental illness but none more than a cheesy slasher flick.

Even if he wasnt an escaped paitent, would there be any way to say that a character who acts so brutally and without remorse does not have some sort of mental illness?

I agree that Fitzpatrick is using this to simply further his cause, and his comments are misguided. I'm sure his impressions were gathered from negative media coverage, which he is furthering.

But Jim, do me a favor... fact check some. This is the second statement released by him. He initially had a statement on November 2nd. Thanks!

Well first off if you put this game in a room with the nut jobs I honestly don't think they

1. would understand how to turn the game on
2. figure out the initial start up screens to even play
3. get past the first nut job (in the game).

This game was not to represent anyone but to bring something close to zombie and crazy people onto a video game format and be something fresh and new.

ps: Eating at McDonald's will make you fat lets ban that before we go crazy over a video game that will never be seen from someone in a nut house.

pps: Can someone crazed even figure out Tetris or Solitaire?

I think he's right. However, focusing solely on Manhunt 2 is misguided. This representation of the mentally ill as dangerous or violent can be found throughout all of the media despite the fact that the mentally ill are no more dangerous than the mentally not-ill. Yes there is a difference between the media and reality, but if you think that the media can't effect our opinions of people in the real world then you are wrong. How many of you would feel completely safe left in the room with "mentally ill" individuals?

I agree with thebrain, I think this guy's heart is in the right place but he should think about forming a list of several games movies tv shows etc. that are just as bad. On the other hand I also think that most people realize that this game is also a childish exaggeration of reality.

As someone who is mentally ill, that is not a joke, I could not give a shit. taumpy and thebrain (ha ha) suggest that he means well, and I am willing to accept that (though it does smack of controversy whoring), but really, if you get your inpressions of the mentally ill from a fucking videogame, congratulations, you are mentally ill.

It is a very silly statement.

As a mentally ill gamer, I find Manhunt 2 to be inexcusably offensive. I will be boycotting Rockstar games until they release a formal apology for mocking the method of my madness.
