^What he said. Sounds like what always happens with Battlefield games, where their servers get overwhelmed the first week and fucks everything up, then they act surprised about it. What the hell.
As much as it sucks, things like this ultimately come down to a business decision. I'm no network admin, but I think common sense can pretty much figure out how these things probably work. You know you're going to have a big spike in network traffic for the first couple of weeks, but you also know it will drop significantly as people trade the game in, mail it back to Gamefly, etc.
Servers and bandwidth cost money, so you have two choices. You either have enough to support that big two week spike and then have a lot of unused bandwidth once things die down, or you have enough to support your anticipated plateau and just weather the early storm as best you can. From a business standpoint, option #2 makes a lot more sense.
As I said, this is all just conjecture on my part, but I think it's a pretty reasonable assumption that's what's going on here.

idk if this has happened to anyone else, but my game refuses to install. every time i try, it gets stuck in the same spot and my entire system freezes to the point where i have to shut it off with the switch in the back. and when i say stuck i mean in the same spot for 2 hours or more and i cant access the xmb.
They had nearly a decade to make this game and that's their suggested number?

I agree that for smaller games the decision to cap it low for future drop-off is smart, but for a powerhouse like GT5, they could have done a little better. I suspect a lot of people will trade the game in, and Sony will subsequently lose out on DLC sales - which sometimes, gross more than the actual game.

Guys, think for a little bit here. They're talking about concurrent PSN connections for people updating stats or other things on the online network when they access menus. It's not 500k people playing at once, it's 500k people just happening to need to access their online profiles at the same time, say when they finish a race. It's reasonable, given that most such transmissions happen in short spurts, to expect that number to be much, MUCH lower than the total number of concurrent players.

Yeah, these are simultaneous connections we're talking about here. I don't have GT5 so I don't know how often the game actually sets up a connection for online interactions. If it does that a lot, both in-game and in the menus, then perhaps that's where it went wrong. You still need a lot of sold copies if you even want to break 500k simultaneous connections, unless the game just makes a lot of connections all the time.

The install looked like it froze a bunch on me too. I just left it and it was fine (if you do a google search you'll see it's just how the install is apparently). If it keeps up though your HDD may be the culprit.

I honestly forget which PS3 game I had this problem with, but it happened to me a while ago. It was only temporary but it was annoying!
Didn't we learn that servers during launch need to be MUCH more robust than months later, from... i don't know... EVERY online game ever made?
I have been having problems since the first time I turned it on. I was wondering what was going on. It hasn't been that bad though.
500,000k? What are they, stupid? Most games get upwards of more than a million simultaneous connections within the first hour of release, let alone a week. This should have be set at around 2 million or possibly even 3.
Once the initial launch fuss dies down and everybody is back at work/school Im sure the issue will be less noticable. Sure its a pain, but its a growing pain and something you just have to get used to.

@sofik you do realise Sony only run the servers for self published games right? you know the ones that often have dedicated servers.
if a non Sony game has server issues, it's down to the publisher.

Hey sofik maybe you should enhoy games for what they are meant to be instead of what you want it to be! Look everyone else does it regardless of what console they play on... And guess what? You have more fun playing games that way :p
ooohhhh im so happy that all the hype created by PS3 loyalists fanboys have been in vain. I have been banned from n4g.com. The reason... trolling. I was labeled a troll because i let the whole world know that GT5 is not a real sim. NOW here i hope that somebody from N4G members read this... "TOLD YOU B!TCHES!" The game have a lot of flaws YUP! "The Real Driving Simulator" only simulate driving.

I wonder if they could have handled more users if they released it earlier. I mean, if they had a little more in the kitty to use instead of using it on the period of tweaks, etc, could that have been put towards expanding the data centre?

I was having these symptoms weds and thurs and disconnected network and all was fine. I tried reconnecting today and everything was working so whatever they did seems to have done the trick for me... At least temporarily.
@MidnightOwl THE REALITY is that in n4g.com if you say something negative about PS3 console or his games you are labeled a TROLL but when you do it referring to pc, wii and xbox 360 platforms or games you are ignored.
This same thing happened when GTAIV released. Just being in the game would cause crashes due to low server availability.
Giant Bomb had all kinds of odd problems in their Quick Look - they hadn't run the optional install first though
