I will be completely honest, when I heard that they were remaking Final Fantasy IV with fancy 3D graphics for the Nintendo DS I actually wasn’t at all looking forward to it. The Super Nintendo classic is easily in my top ten favorite games of all time and I didn’t want anything tampered with. Would Palom and Porom’s heartbreaking sacrifice (my favorite scene) have the same emotional impact? No one would ever think to repaint the Mona Lisa, right?
But then I saw the above trailer and all of my feelings changed.
There seem to be so many new features hinted at that I can’t help but get excited. The CG cutscenes and updated character designs look absolutely stunning, the new love theme is beautiful, and (gasp!) what’s this? Full voice-acting? That’s right; if the trailer is to be believed, it looks like Cecil and the gang are actually going to be speaking this time around.
Seriously, I need to lie down; I think I am going to pass out.

Chad enjoys punching old ladies in the face, Super Metroid, Zelda: A Link to the Past on the SNES (best system ever!), Final Fantasy VI, Day of the Tentacle, Shadow of the Colossus, Mother 3, Beyond Good & Evil, Contra III, Valkyria Chronicles, Punch-Out!!, Half-Life 2, and Super Mario Galaxy 2.
Meet the rest of the team
I know it is difficult to make smooth 3D graphics on DS, but the disconnect between the CG and the gameplay graphics is enormous. The voice acting was a nice addition, though.
Chad, this is an absolute embarassment, but the only Final Fantasy game I've ever completed the whole way through was FFX, which I loved. I know, "dame no desu yo." This is a serious blind spot in my history. I feel like my tastes in games is incredibly similar to you, sp where should I start? Should I go sequentially, say starting with number 2? Any of 'em I can skip along the way? Please don't judge me too harshly. I do still have those "pictures" you don't want shown.
I am absolutely getting this game. I never got to play it on SNES, I got it with Chrono Trigger(which I also never played on SNES) for PSONE. The game is just incredible. I thought 3 was great, as well. Damn, that video was awesome.
Fuck i just started FFIV for GBA on my ds and i'm so halfway through.
Yeah whatever - the cg / in game disconnect is so a nostalgic reminder of FFVII!!!
yay!!!!
is it out can i buy it is it out
I have never considered getting a DS until now. Holy crap. I have hated this Hollywood trend of remaking classics that has crept into games until now. I'm right there with you, Chad.
Now please... please... give me more Chrono! A re-make, a sequel, anything! My dollars, let me give you them, Sqeenix!
Am I the only one who isn't a fan of all this FF remake business? I'm actually really not looking forward to the prospect of Edgar and co. in 3D at all.
Final Fantasy IV (eh, 2), was the first role playing game I was really really into. The part in the game where you fight yourself is probably one of the most memorable fights of any RPG I've played. This remake is probably going to be what makes me buy a DS.
Cecil and Kain FTW
Well if the in-game graphics didn't look like dogshit when compared to the CG movies, then I would be looking forward to these remakes. V and VI are still interesting - and maybe their in-game engine will improve between IV and VI - and I am still looking forward to those two.
@David Houghton,
I am TOTALLY with you, but something about this trailer really sparked my interest. I do agree that the originals will ALWAYS be the best, but I have a morbid curiosity to see how some of my favorite IV scenes will be redone with a makeover. It just hurts my heart that some people will play only this remake and not the original ... :(
@Tristero,
The two best Final Fantasy games of all time are IV and VI (called II and III on the SNES). You have to play them, like, right now. You can come over and borrow them if you want. They are amazing. You will love them or you can punch me in the face. :)
mmmm tasty dragoonness. Kain was always one of my favorite characters in any FF, and the cg scenes do look damn sexy. I got all tingly in my spine watching the dark night / paladin transformation.
And is it just me or does Golbez kinda sound like darth vader?
ooooh. i can't wait. but the voice acting has me a little worried. not because I'm one of those purists who hate all English voice acting work, but because I can imagine the worst for some characters. Such as Palom and Porom, and they're my favorite.
Either way, super excited. Especially now with dolphin confirmation.
Chad, I totally share your pain on the neglect of the originals. I've been repeating my mantra of "Play VI, play VI!" ever since VII came out and the whole world went FF crazy. The GBA version helped me get some people onto it, but it still wasn't the same, and I hate the possibility of people seeing the remakes for the first time and saying "SNES graffix is teh crappeh! Game is rubbish".
Frankly, that kind of insult would feel like someone punching my girlfriend and calling her a minger and I'm not sure I could take it without bursting into tears and launching into an attack of berserker rage. I get your point on the curiosity though. I'm going to be really twitchy to see what they do with the Opera House, Shadow's fall, and especially the opening sequence (It still gives me shivers to this day), but at the end of the day I'd rather see the games as they were designed to be played, as the cream of cohesive 16-bit 2D art, rather than as underpowered 3D with admittedly gorgeous CGI.
this is definitely one of my favorite games ever, as it came out at an impressionable time in my youth and i couldn't be more excited for this release....like Chad pointed out , to relive those moments in 3d. I don't care if it's not the prettiest 3d in the world. Regardless, it's Square and they know exactly what they're doing. I trust them enough not to fux this up.
I think I know now what a "nerdgasm" is you people talk about in Retro Force Go! Because I totally had one last night when I saw this trailer. I even cried a little. FFIV is my favorite Final Fantasy (duh look at my avatar!) and second favorite game of all time (next to Chrono Trigger).
Yeah the originals are nice to play for the nostalgia, but it sounds like this version on the DS will be a real "director's cut" if you will. THAT makes me giddy as a schoolgirl. I can't read any japanese, but I'm so tempted to import this unless Square Enix announces a US release date for the game soon. Everything looks so incredible. Thank you Chad for making me happy. I could watch this trailer all day :)
yes yes yes yes yes. Those cut scenes are amazing. Too bad they couldn't just make the whole game look like that... Still, I can't wait to see what they do with the prologue. Should be stunning.
Also, Japanese voice acting ftw. Everyone knows that subtitled anime and movies are superior to re-dubs. Too bad videogames don't do the same... Hopefully the English voice acting will nearly as good. That could make or break this.
Y'know, while i am still excited for the remake of FFIV, those really nice CGI fmv's make me somewhat sad in that it makes me itch to see the game done in a similar style... though i think the only way that could be done is for it to be released to the PSP, which as a DS owner, i would not want. Different styles work for dfferent games, the super deformed seems to work with III, but i think the realistic style would be better suited for IV.
@TheMartino
Actually, i'm kinda thinking that FFV will be next in line, moving in order of FF's... in a way i kind of welcome delaying a remake of FFVI in hopes that by the time square does get around to making it, they will be able to take advantage of better tech... Not to mention, conisdering how FFIV looks compared to FFIII, square seems to be getting better with working on the DS; if they hold up on the FFVI remake they might be able to make it better looking... personally i would want it to be done in something more like PS2 like graphics, but i don't see that happening...
My favorite FF and one of my favorite games of all time. I played through it so many times as a kid......I'd write more but I think I'm going to go watch the cut scene again.
Eh, I always thought that if they were going to do the old games in 3D, they should go with a powerful system. I'm not completely sold on the chunky in-game graphics.

And spoilers on the Palom Porom thing. All 4 people that have not played this have had their game ruined.
VERY MUCH SO DO WANT. NAO.

Square-Enix is remaking FFIV-FFVI on the DS, so they will get to FFVI in about 2 years.
Now, about Chrono Trigger...I hope they move it to the DS, but that is very unlikely.
Now please... please... give me more Chrono! A re-make, a sequel, anything! My dollars, let me give you them, Sqeenix!

I need it now, like for cereal.
Dunno what you people are frothing at the mouth about. CG... nifty. 3D polygons, hmmm looks crappy to me. /shrug

Damnit, I want to play IV now... :D
And the game doesn't look like dogshit. Sorry if your DS doesn't have the processing power of a PS3 or xbox 360.
Square ought to try going the other way with their remakes, too. FFX in 2D sprite form? I'd buy it.

Too bad I don't have a DS. :(
DO WANT!
What do you guys think of Final Fantasy 7?
I am looking forward to this. Good luck, Square Enix.
