Do you game on NVIDIA hardware? Here's Portal: First Slice for free photo

There's no need to be furious if you already bought The Orange Box; Portal: First Slice is nothing more than an extended demo for one of last year's greatest games and a big "f*** you" to ATI supporters.

If you haven't gotten Portal for PC yet and you're running NVIDIA hardware, then why not take Valve up on this offer? There's nothing to lose other than some space on your hard drive (you'll need Steam to play the demo).

"Valve's endorsement of our technology and tools is yet another example of how the world's leading gaming companies are working with NVIDIA," said Roy Taylor, vice president of content relations at NVIDIA. "Portal is the hottest new, award-winning title from Valve, and we're delighted that Valve will offer First Slice exclusively to GeForce customers."

Details are pretty scarce on the actual length of the demo, so if you get around to downloading it, give us a holler in the comments.

Lulz. You know, they did that same thing for ATI back in the day, but then it was Half-Life:Deathmatch or something like that.

Just goes to show you: gaming can be as fickle an industry as any. No use making allegiances, you'll just get stiffed later.

last 3 cards have been nVidia cards, HOWEVER, coming from a game development background, ATi cards always ran circles around nVidia in early development.

That said, if you haven't played Portal yet, yer probably not reading this site.

You don't mention that you have to install Steam.

Jackass 2.5 didn't mention you have to download some special software to view it.

I hate these sneaky offers to get ya to download some annoying piece of software and websites and bloggers don't tell ya that part either. They're like, yep no catch involved. Bullshit!

Steam isn't that annoying, in fact I find it to be a nice piece of software.

Didn't ATI offer Half Life 2 with their new video cards?

That's not the main point android. Why not just say, download portal, oh and you must install steam to play it. I hate being deceived.

@Orionsaint - You're right -- I figured that, because it is a Valve game, it goes without saying that Steam is required in playing it.

@Orion:
It's free portal how the hell can you be deceived. It's not like steam is the software embodiment of Aids. And as far as I know, it's size is very small. No one is pointing a gun to your head forcing you to do this either. Ok Grim is, so what? Big whoop.

I believe it was Half Life 2, not deathmatch..

No, no - it wasn't the full version, Joel. It was either Deathmatch or Lost Coast, and Lost Coast was essentially free anyways. Now, they may have offered HL2 with new cards, but they offered DM/LC even if you only had old ATI hardware.

I already had HL2 and what-not and it said I already had portal even though I do not. I was mad for a minute then decided to go back to my 360. I also hate using an operating system to view the internets. Software is evil.

Downloaded.

It's

--Portal: First Slice (Training levels up until you beat the second "Momentum" level)

--Peggle EXTREME (first 10 levels of peggle, no time limit)

--HL2 Death Match and

--HL2 Lost Coast

Heven't played the last two yet, but if you have questions, I can jump on for a bit and see what the deal is.

Funny how my Source Powered games still say "Best experienced with ATI" on my graphics options tab.

I'm getting mixed signals here.

Better question. If you have a PC with a video card that can run Portal and you don't have it already, what the fuck is wrong with you?

The game is only the Training levels up until you beat the second Momentum level, however what I found most interesting was...

In the options menu of portal there was a nice shiny add for ATI

...obviously a conspiricy

Well yeah Steam runs like shit on my computer. So do games. I need a better video card. So yeah partially i'm complaining for those reasons. Sorry if i came off like a hot head.

It's not that it's annoying (and it is) but the fact is, there was never any need for Steam to begin with. The integrated server browser worked fine, didn't take up resources or run in the background while you were playing, it was totally integrated and convenient.
But now, much like DICE - seemless Punkbuster integration with BF1942 and so on, if steam has an error, even though it's an separate app taking up separate system resources, it will crash/lock-up/disconnect you from any game you are currently playing in multi.
Nothing about it is convenient or attractive for that matter, it is and will always be much more of a nuisance and just another tacky useless item that gamers don't fucking need.
But much like Gamespy and all those douche bag wannabe gamers, it's here and there isn't shit gamers can do about it but feed it ram.

Interesting idea to boost Nvidia, though I was unaware they needed more support, seeing as they've pretty much been known to (pc) gamers since the voodoo days.
