No one doubts that Ninja Theory has good ideas, and makes good stories. Enslaved was a great experience.
But have they made a good video game yet? Not really. Platforming and combat in Enslaved was shallow and repetitive at best. Kung Fu Chaos had some ok designs but the game was a wreck. Heavenly Sword looked good but was 2 hours long and was shallow as well.
The problem here is that Devil May Cry is NOT an experience. DMC was never known for it's story - most people can't even identify one character outside of Dante, or maybe Vergil, if you're a quasi-fan. The DMC series is about gameplay.
The reason it took off as a series is because it contained deep, 60fps combat in an incredibly fast paced engine. DMC3 still is one of the only action games ever made that allows you to change weapons on the fly, mid-combo. If I recall correctly it took God of War 3 entire games to figure that out, an entire generation later.
So no, given their lengthy history and wasted opportunity, I don't have much faith in Ninja Theory to make an action game. What I'm counting on with the finished product is something similar to Dragon Age II, as compared to the earlier Dragon Age: Origins.
It might provide a decent experience that we've seen before, but it won't be anything special, or break the mold in any way (like the previous DMC games have) - I might even go so far as to say with the odd "parallel universe" announcement, to say "why even call it Devil May Cry? For the money?"
If I'm correct, this way they can say "it's the same world!" and reap the benefits from the past gamer's lore if this does poorly; then they can just borrow things people liked from the old games like Vergil, etc.
If it does well, they can just keep doing "this world".
It's a pretty easy cop out.
The graphics look muddy and the music is ridiculously bad. I've already expressed how uninterested in the story and the direction the character is taking. I'll skip this in favor of DMC's HD collection.
What it sounds like to me is that Capcom is setting up contingency plans (aka cop outs) if this game bombs. Which is a pretty reasonable thing to do when you consider that Devil May Cry 4 alone has probably outsold Ninja Theory's lifetime sales. I think Capcom expected people to be unhappy about this at first and thought the heat about it would die off, but the problem is that the heat from it really hasnt died off.
The whole "there are demons everywhere" bit and "gluttony is good" poster is so funny. Social commentary in a DMC game? I'm all for social commentary in games, I love the idea actually, but this reeks of trying too hard to be trendy. I highly doubt that they're going to go into deep discussion about the sociological and psychological effects that advertisement has made on our society, which is shame because that's a really interesting topic, and if they did it would distract from being a DMC game.
It just seams like it's ripping off They Live, and the Shepard Fairey Obey movement without adding anything interesting into the discussion.
Instead this reminds of the people who rebel for the sake of rebelling. They'll say things like advertisement is bad because it's bad and never give any reasoning. This reminds me of the bit in SLC Punk where Steve-o talks about all the posers that do it just because "it's cool". I remember that part where he says that punks who are not affiliated with England and wore Union Jack Flags patches were all posers. Coincidentally the new Dante is wearing a Union Jack Flag although the series had never been associated with Britain before.
In a way this game is alot like DMC. In DMC 3 Dante was made overly cool to come off as somewhat as a parody. He was so cool that he was lame, but somehow that made him cool. Except in that game it was intentional, in this game it's not. I mean Dante smokes now for no reason, and Tameem has mad sure to emphasis that "Dante doesn't give a fuck."
I wouldn't be surprised if you can collect Vinyl records in this game to buy new moves. They have to promote this game at Hot Topic, I can see it now Dante shirts and being able to buy the game there even though they don't sell videogames.
I think this game is going to make me laugh as much as DMC 3 if not more. Which is a good thing I guess. So suddenly I don't think handing the game to Ninja Theory is such a bad idea. I got nothing against hipsters, I know most people hate them, but I have no issues with them. I just think the things they like are funny. This is a great game for teenagers, and seeing as I've been out of highschool for a few years now it might be funny to remember all the things people were into. It'll be like a giant game of unintentional satire, I love it.
............Sorry but even if the game looks damn fine that's one of the stupidest things (or cookie cutter, really) plots/stories/excuses I've heard out of a fandom. I've seen pretty games and even pretty games with great gameplay, that doesn't excuse the shitty story (doesn't mean you can't play them either).
I really wish they could've just let this be a totally independent game using DMC's formula and riding the franchise's bandwagon. Bayonetta did it, and did it well. I don't see why this game couldn't have done the same. Sorry but if there's something that pisses me off is tying a game to a popular franchise when it has barely anything to do about it.
@Scissors: What he/she said.
Here's some gameplay footage to those that haven't seen it yet

Other then that, if its good I'll play it, I'll just have to stomach wanting beat my chest and proclaim "Dante good gorilla"
I mean it looks like a great game and all, but calling it a DMC game is a real stretcher.
I'm not laying a single dollar down on this title unless Ninja Theory releases a video which shows more than a second of combat at a time. DMC1-4 won't be made worse by their involvement in this title, but damned if they'll see my hard-earned dollars.
I don't give a fuck how impressive they can make a trailer look. Okay, Ninja Theory public relations guy, you went to film school. You know how to edit a few bits of impressive looking footage together to make an upcoming game look exciting.
Doesn't change the fact that the models in the game look blocky compared to Devil May Cry 4 and doesn't change the fact that until I get my hands on a demo or see an unedited gameplay video, I'm not buying into your marketing bullshit.
Ninja Theory, you want to make play in the Devil May Cry universe? You'd better deliver a fucking Devil May Cry game. Because I'm not going to put up with subpar gameplay in a game entry for this series any more than a Grand Theft Auto fan would put up with a linear game in that series.
let's see how this game performs
hopefully it'll slap sense out of capcom Capcom.
Series creator Hideki Kamiya wanted a character who would smile in the face of the devil and laugh the whole thing off like some sort of game. This character would "Stylishly run with long coat," be like a "British guy," and so cool that he "doesn't smoke cigarette." With these guidelines, Kamiya and his designers made the iconic action character that is Dante, and with the exception that he came off as significantly more American than British, the hit the mark they were aiming for. Knowing this and to then see the disgruntled, scrawny, smoking mess that is the Ninja Theory design is what pissed me off the most. The sucked all the fun out of the King of Over-the-Top-Dickishness, and made him into a serious little prick. You don't take a well established character, and flip his whole everything on its ass like that! It's just not right.
As the trailers for DmC starting revealing more elements, my feelings of trepidation about this game increased with each one; The combat seemed significantly slower and more plodding that DMC's, let alone Bayonetta's; Dante fights with a. . . . meat whip?; He's a HALF ANGEL now!?; and so on. The little things like the attractive setting (similar to DMC1 and Bayonetta), or that Dante's devil trigger causes him to temporarily assume his old appearance, did little to comfort me. It seemed like DmC would just be a train wreck for any fan of the original series.
However, this trailer has changed my opinion a bit. For one, the combat seems to have been made much faster and is seems similar to that of the original (although still nowhere near DMC3 or Bayonetta). It also shed more light onto this Dante's personality, which doesn't seem to be as angsty as the initial trailers made him seem. And the enemy designs actually look really good, as does the local and some of the cutscenes. Even the British flag on his jacket seems to at least be an acknowledgement of a lost element of Kamiya's design focus and I can respect that. Its given a small glimmer of hope in the mass chasm of doubt that I have for this game. That being said, however, I still absolutely DETEST the whole Devil-Angel concept and his new voice actor makes campy Reuben Langdon (who at least fits Dente's personality) look like thespian of the fucking year.
DmC looks like it'll be just another Castlevanis: Order of Shadows: a relatively competent game that has nothing to do with its own title franchise and for good reason.
