Devil May Cry creator Hideki Kamiya is at it again, looking down on more videogames that he didn't make and claiming that nobody built upon the groundwork he laid with DMC. In particular, Itagaki's Ninja Gaiden was singled out, with Kamiya claiming it didn't have the power required to interest him:
"I've never played Ninja Gaiden, and to be honest, I'm not that interested. The quality that gets you interested in something is that you feel something for them. Like on TV, or a movie, or a song, or whatever. You just feel something, and you get pulled into it, and then that's how you pick something up. But Ninja Gaiden just didn't have that power, so that's why I wasn't interested in it.
Kamiya went on to trash nearly every other action game by claiming that after he made Devil May Cry, "the baton was dropped" by his peers and nobody picked it up. The only game that the Viewtiful Joe creator claims is a worthy rival is God of War, and he states his plan is to exceed Sony's exclusive action franchise.
"Devil May Cry was a bit rough, but I think that there's no roughness in God of War. I thinks that it's very well-made. So there's like a wall for your imagination or ideas, and when you're actually creating something, you don't even see the wall. But with GoW, I felt like I saw beyond the wall. So the GoW dev team's imagination and their ideas were like... beyond. That's something else that struck me."
The former Capcom man then talked about his upcoming actiong game Bayonetta, describing it as a "sexy action game" and discussing that his dev team sometimes have trouble understanding him when trying to express the kind of moves he wants in the game:"I'm usually picturing a steamy hot woman doing the move, and I'm trying to do that, but I'm not actually able to convey that to the team, so it sometimes doesn't get across to the team." Well, he might be a bit more outspoken about others than is wise, but it sounds like Hideki Kamiya has some sexy moves. If Bayonetta can be as good as he, however, the man can run his mouth all he wants.
i thought it would be impossible for a game with a witch with guns in her heels to turn out repetitive and boring, but i guess he'll show us how it's done.
i mean you jim. no, not really.
i'm imagining kamiya trying to do a sexy action move in a meeting room with a dozen other men gazing.....
*wink*
Hideki Kamiya is a valley girl....CONFIRMED
I can't wait for what other trash-talk bullshit this guy spews.
Reading the headline I figured he was going to have a legitimate complaint, like he didn't like the combo system or thought the difficulty was poorly balanced. That he also worships the ground GOW walks on really shows the shallowness of his opinion. I liked GOW and all but found it overrated, especially the sequel.
Maybe if Ryu stuck a rose in his mouth and acted like a tard it would "pull him in". It will be interesting to see, when Bayonetta is released, if this guy "drops his own baton".
I really love all three franchises. But I'd say God of War is my favorite, simply because it has insane production values, and more than anything, is an experience. But the fighting system isn't really anything more than button mashing.
Ninja Gaiden has really great and challenging fighting, but is held back by the terrible camera and ridiculously bad story. I also dislike the plasticy look of the graphics, in all Team Ninja games really.
Devil May Cry is kind of in between. It isn't really bad at any one thing, but doesn't do anything better than the other two franchises either. Only I really dislike the DMC tradition of sealing you in with dumb magic doors and walls. Also, truly awful level design.
Of the three heroes though, I would prefer Dante. Kratos is completely unlikable with no redeeming features whatsoever, Ryu has no personality whatsoever, while Dante is pretty cool.
He had me immediately in the opening of DMC 1 when Trish smashes through the wall with the motorcycle and Dante doesn't even flinch, he simply says "If nature's calling, it's in the back." <3
Fighting against 3 shadows (secret mission 4 or something) is still the pinnacle moment of any action game i've played.
Despite all its flaws, NG2 was also much better than Devil May Cry 4 which might as well been half a game since they repeat bosses and locations.
