DMC creator snubs Ninja Gaiden, trashes action games that he didn't make photo

Devil May Cry creator Hideki Kamiya is at it again, looking down on more videogames that he didn't make and claiming that nobody built upon the groundwork he laid with DMC. In particular, Itagaki's Ninja Gaiden was singled out, with Kamiya claiming it didn't have the power required to interest him:

"I've never played Ninja Gaiden, and to be honest, I'm not that interested. The quality that gets you interested in something is that you feel something for them. Like on TV, or a movie, or a song, or whatever. You just feel something, and you get pulled into it, and then that's how you pick something up. But Ninja Gaiden just didn't have that power, so that's why I wasn't interested in it.

Kamiya went on to trash nearly every other action game by claiming that after he made Devil May Cry, "the baton was dropped" by his peers and nobody picked it up. The only game that the Viewtiful Joe creator claims is a worthy rival is God of War, and he states his plan is to exceed Sony's exclusive action franchise.

"Devil May Cry was a bit rough, but I think that there's no roughness in God of War. I thinks that it's very well-made. So there's like a wall for your imagination or ideas, and when you're actually creating something, you don't even see the wall. But with GoW, I felt like I saw beyond the wall. So the GoW dev team's imagination and their ideas were like... beyond. That's something else that struck me."

The former Capcom man then talked about his upcoming actiong game Bayonetta, describing it as a "sexy action game" and discussing that his dev team sometimes have trouble understanding him when trying to express the kind of moves he wants in the game:"I'm usually picturing a steamy hot woman doing the move, and I'm trying to do that, but I'm not actually able to convey that to the team, so it sometimes doesn't get across to the team." Well, he might be a bit more outspoken about others than is wise, but it sounds like Hideki Kamiya has some sexy moves. If Bayonetta can be as good as he, however, the man can run his mouth all he wants.

God of War was well done, but had moments of difficulty akin to running face first into a solid brick wall at your top running speed. Devil May Cry was hard, surely, but consistently difficult. Even the third battle with Nelo Angelo when he rips off his mask only took a few tries to get the hang of.

bayonetta is made by dmc's creator? there goes my hype.
i thought it would be impossible for a game with a witch with guns in her heels to turn out repetitive and boring, but i guess he'll show us how it's done.

Somehow Kamiya isn't "pulled in" by a game where you get to be a ninja running around fighting other ninjas? Strange dude

So basically he's saying Ninja Gaiden sucks because he doesn't want to play it? How does that make any sense at all?

Perhaps he was not interested because he sees ninjas everyday. But how often do the Japanese see a mortal try and kill a god? Not more than three times a year, I bet!

Yeah, where does he get the nerve to say that he innovated action games when they all still utilize orbs. If anything, hack 'n slash games need to move away from their typical tropes like orbs and uninspired powerups.

interesting - the guy is saying exactly what's been in my head for a while. i was introduced to gaming late in life with god of war. and was immediately surprised that there was very, very little that compared in regards to the overall experience (shadow of the colossus was special as well). i was shocked how..."not next gen" the ninja gaiden entry for the ps3 - more so (and even more shockingly) with the latest entry for the 360. the latest DMC entry (although not god of war) was spot on in regards to experience with graphics exactly where they should be in this day and age - and it really was fun.

I can see where he's coming from. Ninja Gaiden looks 0% compelling to me.

I'm not a huge action genre fan, but I love me some GoW. I thought NGsigma was ok, but nothing I'd want to spend much money on.

Pretty pulled-out-the-ass reason not to like a game, especially since DMC and Ninja Gaiden play pretty similarly. The only major difference is in story presentation, DMC is more over the top B-Movie style and NG is straight laced. But who really cares about the story in either of these series? It's like complaining that an action movie didn't give enough screen time to the tacked on love interest.

Reading the headline I figured he was going to have a legitimate complaint, like he didn't like the combo system or thought the difficulty was poorly balanced. That he also worships the ground GOW walks on really shows the shallowness of his opinion. I liked GOW and all but found it overrated, especially the sequel.

So the action game that looks better than his, has better weapons and combos than his, has more interesting bosses and levels than his, better platforming than his and is harder without simply giving the enemies more hit points and letting them deal more damage is worse because...it didn't pull him in? Meanwhile a brainless button masher that plays on auto-pilot like God of War is a masterpiece?

Maybe if Ryu stuck a rose in his mouth and acted like a tard it would "pull him in". It will be interesting to see, when Bayonetta is released, if this guy "drops his own baton".

Really, in terms of presentation, Ninja Gaiden and Devil May Cry is not even in the same league as God of War. In terms of fighting system, Ninja Gaiden is vastly superior to both DMC and GoW.

I really love all three franchises. But I'd say God of War is my favorite, simply because it has insane production values, and more than anything, is an experience. But the fighting system isn't really anything more than button mashing.

Ninja Gaiden has really great and challenging fighting, but is held back by the terrible camera and ridiculously bad story. I also dislike the plasticy look of the graphics, in all Team Ninja games really.

Devil May Cry is kind of in between. It isn't really bad at any one thing, but doesn't do anything better than the other two franchises either. Only I really dislike the DMC tradition of sealing you in with dumb magic doors and walls. Also, truly awful level design.

Of the three heroes though, I would prefer Dante. Kratos is completely unlikable with no redeeming features whatsoever, Ryu has no personality whatsoever, while Dante is pretty cool.

He had me immediately in the opening of DMC 1 when Trish smashes through the wall with the motorcycle and Dante doesn't even flinch, he simply says "If nature's calling, it's in the back." <3

Personally, I do find DMC to be groundbreaking. I think everyone did. No other game i've played blends atmosphere and action so well. And no, DMC1 did not just make enemies stronger. You died faster and the enemies were more relentless. Like you know how in action movies where one dudes takes on like 10, but they all seem to line up to take turns at attacking him? What if all 10 were attacking him at the same time. That's what it felt like.

Fighting against 3 shadows (secret mission 4 or something) is still the pinnacle moment of any action game i've played.

I have finished DMC 1 and 3, and I can honestly say they aren't a patch on GoW or Ninja Gaiden. Sure, the gameplay is great, but the 90s "extreme" cool fused with badly translated engrish really sets your teeth on edge - its dealbreaking to me.

the problem with the "Videogames are art" position is that too many of the artists are major fucking assholes. And their assholery is too often vindicated and encouraged by people buying their games because they have gallons of blood and gore and/or Death Star sized boobs.

Ninja Gaiden Black was THE action game of the last generation of consoles, perfectly, tuned, great assortment of weapons and just an overall better game than all the DMC's, for all the great things DMC3 did, it did a lot wrong and being able to switch weapons on the fly was meaningless in the end due to being limited to 2 weapons and having to repeat combos.

Despite all its flaws, NG2 was also much better than Devil May Cry 4 which might as well been half a game since they repeat bosses and locations.
