The upcoming Square Enix Final Fantasy fighting title Dissidia: Final Fantasy could have become the next Ergheiz, but Wired's Game|Life says it isn't. Thank Odin! Their hands-on with the PlayStation Portable title at Jump Festa 2008 gives us some new details on the title as well as a list of characters. Confirmed characters: - The Warrior of Light, Garland (FFI)
- Firion, Emperor Palamecia (FFII)
- Sephiroth (FFVII)
- Squall, Ultimecia (FFVIII)
- Zidane, Kuja (FFIX)
- Tidus (FFX)
Between this character list and Game|Life's impressions, my interest in this title has increased greatly. I've always wanted to kick Tidus' ass. Siliconera links us to rumored artwork which suggests the addition of characters like Exdeath, Jecht, The Cloud of Darkness, and even Final Fantasy VI's Kefka. Who wouldn't want to play as Kefka? I hope he laughs in his SNES voice when he wins a bout. Japanese PSP owners and importers will finally get their hands on Dissidia: Final Fantasy in early 2008.

How is this actually news? Aside from Tidus we've seen screenshots of every single one of these confirmed characters, or at least artwork of them in magazine scans. Yawn.

I'm actually surprised at Square Enix. They could have taken the easy way out and put every MAIN character from their games, but they're going a more obscure-ISH route.
I'm also KIND OF PROUD that Cloud isn't mentioned...AT ALL. It's kinda cool that they're not relying on their MAIN MAIN MAIN fanboy character to promote this game (even though Sephiroth kinda fills that spot)
I'm hoping for Sora, or even Marche.
I think Garland is a good idea, I'm looking forward to playing as the original dark knight.
This game will be broken, everyone will just spam Vanish-Doom.
In other news, if Sabin Figaro is not put in a FF fighter, I am going to be really pissed. I'm sure that Square-Enix would like to avoid that situation at all costs. If they really have to pick just two heroes from FF6 for this game, they can't do better than Sabin and Cyan, or maybe Gau. Both Sabin and Cyan already have a large pool of personalized moves available, and c'mon, Sabin's a grappler, for fuck's sake.
And yes to Kefka, since he is the most successful video game villain I have ever known. And the laugh.

Please put Kefka, Terra and/or Celes, Rydia, Onion Knight, Vivi, at least one character from FF5, and Cloud. I only want Cloud in the game so I can beat the shit out of him over and over and over.

best part of ehrgeiz was the quest mode it was like diablo meets final fight it was GRRRREAT. I will totally import this if it has a quest mode like ehrgeiz and ehrgeiz really wasnt that bad of a game.

As long as you can still rename all the Final Fantasy IV and VI characters, so that you're fighting Jerkface against Stupid. I used to like called Cid Potato in Final Fantasy II / IV, for reasons that should be obvious.

I was just having an incredibly nerdy conversation with my boyfriend and his roommate yesterday about how there's no pre-final fantasy VII in Kingdom Hearts. And how Kingdom Hearts is terrible.

Also the reason for that is because Nomura doesn't want characters he didn't design in KH. He was really reluctant to put Setzer and Vivi in KH2.

As far as I can recall the Warrior of Light is meant to encompass the four main jobs from FF1. I think I remember reading that his special abilities will let him use job skills from the Warrior, BM, WM, and Thief jobs. So he'd be able to (presumably) use sword techniques, offensive spells (fire and lightning...maybe Nuke would be nice =P), defensive magic (I'm betting Shell and Barrier), and who knows what for the Thief (speed boosts? quicker attacks?).
To switch gears I have to agree with everyone that this list seems somewhat weak. Ultimecia? I'd rather have Seifer or even Edea. I also don't get why they just don't go ahead and put Cloud on the list. We all KNOW he's going to be there!
Also Kefka BETTER be in this game. It just wouldn't feel right to not put Sephiroth in his place if I'm not using Kefka to do it...
Let's hope that the battle system is done well.

THEY BETTER PUT KEFKA ON THERE!!!!! Kefka is the SHIZ!! And his laugh!! And Celes, Terra, Edgar, and Sabin. Lol. Sephiroth is "OK", but Kefka beats Sephy by a landslide! And plus, who doesn't wanna kick Sephiroth's ass with Kefka? God know Kefka deserves more attention!
