Dissatisfaction with Braid 'does not compute' with Insomniac dev photo

MTV Multiplayer has a little quote from Ratchet & Clank: Quest for Booty designer Brian Allgeier concerning Braid that I'm sure the game's many fans on Destructoid would agree with:

I thought, wow, six to eight hours of a side-scroller for 15 bucks, that’s amazing. To spend 15 dollars based on the gameplay I’ve seen and not be satisfied doesn’t make sense: does not compute.

The old price argument is more or less settled by now, with those who spent the money nearly completely satisfied with their purchase and those that decided not to buy it living the rest of their lives without experiencing one of this year's finest games. Everybody's happy, everything is settled, but it's nice to see another developer speaking highly of a brilliant title that is even getting a little mainstream attention

Is there anybody among us who bought Braid and wasn't satisfied? I'd be interested to see if anybody actually felt cheated out of their cash.

I never really like the game from what I played. Someone with a differing opinion "Does not compute".

What a silly statement.

I thoroughly enjoyed Braid.

Now, on a somewhat related topic: Is Quest for Booty, which I've heard is short as well, worth $15?

I'd rather have a beat em up. Sorry Braid, you can keep your puzzles.

For now...

I've yet to play through all of braid but it has really started to grow on me. I was hesitant at first because of the mediocre demo released. (giving us only a taste of the first level was not a good idea in my eyes) Here's hoping it gets the press and cash it deserves.

I liked the demo. I still haven't upgraded to the full version. I don't know, I just don't want to commit to it yet. Maybe after I get bored with what I'm doing now.

Short game, but like its been said... "it has no filler puzzles"

Bought it, loved it.

I think the content to price ratio is completely reasonable.... I mean, i am missing out on some sweet gamerpics, but... you know....

I did enjoy Braid, but I did feel kind of cheated once I beat it.

It's a great game, was a lot of fun, was nice and polished... but come on! I finished the game on my first night, and didnt spend more than 5-10 minutes solving any single puzzle.

So yeah, I liked Braid, but it did not offer enough for me to justify it's price.

Did you get the stars? The puzzles are more difficult than the others.

I beat Braid in one day, wished it was cheaper but still very much enjoyed it. The artwork was beautiful and the puzzles were brilliant.

Right after I finished the demo I went out, got some Microsoft points, and bought this game. I never once doubted my decision and I feel that "Braid" is worth a lot more than 15$. "Braid" is a priceless experience that changes the way I look at videogames.

"Braid" breaks the genre of 2d platformers and then rebuilds it. This game is like "Mario",only if "Mario" had a soul.

Anyone who is interested in this game should not hesitate to buy it. In fact, I believe that if any reasonable person went into this game with an open mind they would love it and be better for the experience.

Everyone is going ot say they beat them very quickly because they think they're smart. I beat the entir egame in a single sitting as well. However, this doesn't change the fact that I beat it again the next day, and now I'm going through trying to figure out where the staars are and how to get them. One of them in World 6 took close to an hour to figure out and get because it consisted fo a series of obscure puzzles. (Okay, I have to get up there, then over there, then get that thing up there and then somehow figur out how to get from here to there again. ~10 minutes to solve each part of an amazing puzzle.)

I'm going to say that if you beat the game in a few hours and dropped it, you're a liar. Anyone who is good enough at the puzzles in Braid ot finish them that quickly will not be satisfied in just beating it once or not trying to figur eout how ot get the stars.

Why do I get the feeling Quest for Booty is going to be four hours for $20

....

Nah couldn't be.

I've liked so much Braid, but I was just expecting for more. I'm not cheated, but if it has more 3 or 5 stages would be very nice.

I played through Braid, all 60 pieces. Used a walkthrough on 1 puzzle piece, I still think is fucking retarded. I don't see myself ever playing it again, and compared to the experiences I've had with other games priced at $10... Yeah, I think Braid is a bit overpriced. Great game though.

I liked the game, didn't love it. I found the last world/ending pretty ingenious. But I needed that little extra push to actually love the game. Maybe 1 more world.

Story made no sense to me. Reading comprehension ftw.

If we're going by an hours-to-dollars pricing schedule, then why aren't games like CoD4 and Mario Kart going for $100 each?

BECAUSE IT'S TOO MUCH TO DEMAND IN COMPARISON TO THEIR "PEER" TITLES.

I bought it, don't like it. There you go.

Bionic Command Rearmed, on the other hand, $5 less and many more times more enjoyable to me.

I think the people who didn't like the game just don't like lateral thinking puzzles. As a big fan of these types of puzzles, I was immediately hooked. I probably dumped about 6 hours of in-game into it, then another 2-3 hours of conversation about the ending with others who have beat it. It was well worth the $15, but only if you really love to challenge your mind rather than your twitch.

Doesn't make sense to me either. I try my best to accept that people have different tastes and all that, but this idea that Braid is anything other than a ridiculously good use of your 15 dollars completely boggles me.

I bought it. Thought it was frustrating, from both a gameplay perspective and a storytelling perspective. I agree with the earlier poster that I spent five dollars less on Bionic Commando Rearmed and am enjoying that experience many times more.

The game is fiendishly difficult yes. but what more do you want from it. Its a classical puzzle platformer with a neat mechanic and as much as I am... ahem blowing my load over bionic commando rearmed, you have to admit it is technically the same game as the old one. at least this one is new.

the reason you probably don't get the story is that you are taking for granted that games often spell out everything for you. In this case the developer left things out and made many things deliberately vague for the sake of letting you fill in the details yourself. if you use your imagination fill in the blanks, the story becomes as clear as you want it to be. or as funny as a poorly done madlibs. whatever

Braid is a gaming masterpiece, and also extremely short. I beat it fully once with all puzzle pieces (maybe 4 hours at most), and then I did that again last night (around 1 hour.) So, yeah, I am kind of disappointed at the length, just for the fact that there's no replay value if you've solved all the puzzles already.

However, it was one of those great games in matters of story where it made me go "no way." Not alot of games have that distinction.

I've payed more money for shorter and crappier games back in the NES Era. $15 for Braid is a fucking steal. A game of similar length back in the 80's and early 90's would be $40 - $50. If Braid just isn't your type of game, that's cool. But if you are the least bit interested and haven't bought it due to price - take the plunge and get it. You won't regret it.
ess's Avatar - Comment posted on 08/25/2008 23:19

Plenty of value. 60 puzzle pieces, probably 40 of which are legitimate puzzles.

The reason people complain about the length of the game is that they are idiots. They forget that the reason the game only takes 6 hours to complete is that it removes ALL filler. If you want Braid to take 12 hours like a typical platformer, go ahead and exit out to the main menu every time you die or get a puzzle piece, then you get that typical start-the-level-over-every-time-you-die awesomeness we are used to.

Braid (minus the stars) is five or six hours of pure, undiluted awesome. If you plowed through it in one night, that is your decision, but don't blame the game.

I like what Microsoft did with the "Summer of Arcade." Summer is a perfect time for shorter downloadable titles. And probably not coincidentally, if you bought Geometry Wars 2, Braid, Galaga Legions, Bionic Commando, and Castle Crashers, you just spent $60.00 or as much as you would have for a typical new game that likely would not provide the value that those five games would combined.

I dont see the no replay arguement as iv completed it twice (once with stars) and am challenging myself with time rails which makes it a completely new game.Thats ven whle hating the convaluted and pretentous way inhich there is no appithany and your left to decide 4 yourself wot it meant.

However id rather pay $15. It was a strech for £15!
