Disgaea DS scan and plenty more NIS on Nintendo's handheld

By now you all should have heard the rumors that a DS version of Disgaea was on the way, and the Internet has finally gotten its clammy talons on the Famitsu page that confirms it. What we know is that the game will be a port of Disgaea: Hour of Darkness (or Afternoon of Darkness if you have the PSP version) and ... well, do you we need more? It's Disgaea!

Actually, one question that needs answering is this -- how are they going to fit that much game into one little cart? I fear that compromises may have to be made, vis-a-vis the voice acting department. Maybe they can cram it all in, but if not, that would be a real shame, as Disgaea's voice work was pretty entertaining and helped flesh out a witty, if ludicrous, script. Nevertheless, I'm not one to complain about NIS making more sales -- God knows those guys deserve it.

Speaking of more, two further NIS titles have been announced for the DS. The first is a game called Jigsaw World, while the second is going to be of great interest to old school tactical RPG fans with long memories. That game is Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure. Ring any bells? Anyone?

Sadly, I never got to play NIS' musical RPG, despite the fact I badly want to, so this is news that's even better than Disgaea to me. Being an original PlayStation release, hopefully there's no question of Rhapsody being ported without hindrance, and I will finally get to indulge my love of RPGs, quirkiness, and musicals in one fell swoop. What a glorious day!

I've been debating picking up a new DS for awhile now(I sold my old one to a friend). I just told a co-worker yesterday that a Disgaea game on the DS would pretty much ensure I bought one. Between that, and everyone I know talking about Professor Layton, looks like I'll be picking one up with my next paycheck.

Ahhh, Rhapsody. I managed to snag a copy when it first came out and it was pretty fun and silly.

I'll love Atlus forever!

I wonder if the return of Rhapsody will feature newly translated songs. The old ones were a delight. All I know about both Pirates and Mountain men, and hold true to this day, I learned from Rhapsody.

Pirates "hunt for sunken treasure on the ocean, ocean," and, if I am not mistaken, "when they get sunburn they put on lotion, lotion."

Mountain men are, in fact, "big and strong and always shouting."

Have it for the PS2 and the PSP already. A little disapointed this isn't a new game. O well. Bring on Disgaea 3!

Anyone who has never played Disagea and considers themselves an RPG fan needs to rethink that thought. Probably one of my favorite RPG's of all time. Albeit it's a SRPG, the comedy, gameplay, and storyline are all golden.

My life is going to be over when this comes out.

Also, I could do without the voice acting. Sure it's icing on the delicious cake that is Disgaea, but it's the gameplay and writing that makes it great.

Don't listen to Painuser, the gameplay is amazing, but the humour and storyline are a for more acquired taste. This assessment is relative to the narrower appeal of the SRPG in general. The voice acting and dialogue were embarassing. I would've been mortified if anyone not previously familiar with how good the game is to play had walked in on me during any attempt at humour or story. I think it's the game's best endorsement that I was able to look past and sometimes endure almost every aspect of the game beyond the core gameplay.

Damn, I'm praying this comes to the states. Disgaea on the PSP was good enough, but the DS is that much more portable; you won't see me shoving the hulk that's my PSP in my pocket anytime soon. Definitely looking forward to this one.

DS disgaea gives me a warm and fuzzy feeling inside, and anything else from nippon ichi on DS would make my life that much better, portable pure awesomeness for the win.

SRPG's are an aquired taste but the pure insanity of the cut scenes and the epic cuteness of Flonne and Etna makes this game a must play.... or else

I want touch screen controls. It makes so much intuitive sense.

I also want totem poles stacked up from the bottom screen into the top one.

As much as I adore Disgaea, I already have two versions of it.

But Rhapsody? Wow, who dredged that one up from beyond the grave? I'd love to play that game again, without having to have Lvl 2500 Maijins to take down Marjorly.

The PSP one looked fucking gorgeous, and wasn't buggy at all like the FF Tactics port. I'm certain that's the version you should stick with if you have a PSP. Otherwise I guess this is OK if you've only got a DS.

Oooh Rhapsody. That was a game I wanted to play but missed out on and whenever I have found it recently it's been too much money.

I'm a little disappointed that this is just a port of Diagaea 1 since I have it for the PS2 and PSP. I was hoping it would be a prequel or some sort of side story. Oh well...

I've done three hundred hours on this between PS2 and PSP. I can't do it again. Sweet of you to offer, NIS, but I'll have to pass.

Also to those asking: The traditional limit of a DS cart is 1 gigabit (128MB), though new cards can push 2 (256MB). I don't know if this is a hard limit because of addressable space or something, or if it's just a limit of production technology, and Google's not being friendly because it throws links to (Shh.) when I try to ask it.

I'm just thinking back right now to Pokemon and SimCity on DS and, damn, the save times ALONE are probably going to destroy this one.

@nilcam

Why in the world would you sell your PSP when the best Disgaea version is on it?

And uh, good for DS owners I guess, I couldn't get into Disgaea, to grindy and not nearly as funny as people made it out to be.

A port to a Nintendo console in lieu of actually making something new? Shocking!

...

It definitely would be a shame if they nixed the voice acting. It was the only thing that made the dialogue even remotely entertaining. :p

Honestly, I don't even know how the hell they're going to pull it off. The PS2 version was 700 megs. The PSP? 900. There is no compression that good with general content anywhere in the world.

Even if you cut the voices and mangle the music you've still got a mountain of graphics.

I suppose, at the very least, it'll be interesting.

Ke no salio el port de PSP hace poco??? Sera ke no vendio bien??? =P Pero bueno, NIS, despiertenme despues del port para celulares, N64, y SEGA Genesis... BITCHES

Even on PS2, this had PS1 graphics, so bringing that down to DS resolution will cut down on the memory size by a large chunk, not to mention the voice overs. It'll work fine.
I remember hearing about Rhapsody when it had come out, and wanting to buy it. I even saw it at EB and fry's. Shame I never got around to it, but at least I have a second chance!

Haha, I love how people are complaining just because Disgaea got ported, how many times? Twice? Nevermind that many games back in the day would appear on three consoles at once, never mind how many times Square-Enix or Capcom ports their titles. How DARE NIS expand its audience?

It's gone multiplatform. It's really not that big a deal.
