Destructoid is gaming news, community, videos, and sometimes love. Take the tour or jump in with Facebook:

Disgaea is the type of game you want to play if you have nothing in your life. I mean, absolutely nothing. If you're a professional, emotional and spiritual wasteland, then the days and days of levelling up, levelling up and levelling up some more are going to be right up your alley. For normal people, it can be a might too impenetrable, but it's still a damn fine game.

The only question I have is this: Why on Earth is Disgaea 3 not on the PlayStation 2 where it belongs? A great title it may be, but Sony isn't going to trot it out to show off these fantastic Blu-ray graphics now, is it? This kind of stuff should be on the still-thriving PS2, which has almost become a haven for such games.

Whatever the reason, Disagaea 3 is on the PS3 and from the trailer, it hasn't changed much. Good news for those without lives. Intimidating news for those who have to be somewhere but just need one ... more ... level.

PS2 killed 8 of my lives. Please let PS3 kill the 9th.

One of my buddy's love this series, are they really that good? After watching the trailer it looks like a typical, confusing, weird Japanese tac-rpg.

VWGTI: It IS a typical, confusing, weird Japanese tac-rpg. It's just that Disgaea is one of the best at what it does. I wouldn't call it a revolution though, it's just so hardcore that the hardcore gamers cream themselves over it.

I loved it, but couldn't make myself finish the first. Sorry, but it was just too much to the point of alienation.

Hmm, I'll have to admit that I am intriqued to say the least.

I think the reason Disgaea is on PS3 and not PS2 is because there aren't really many games out for the PS3 right now so it makes sense to, oh, I don't know, release a few games for the system?

I mean I know this could just be dumb Sony shooting themselves in the foot again. I mean come on, release a popular franchise on the PS3? I thought they didn't wanna sell any units!

If you buy a PS3 for Disgaea 3, then lulz. That is all.

Putting an existing series on a new system is a great way to sell units...if it's a big enough draw to sell the unit. I love the Disgaea series, but I am in no way willing to shell out $400 just to play it (for me at least there are not enough good games out or coming down the pipe for me to want to buy a PS3).

Seems somewhat silly to alienate a niche community that is diehard for a game just to try and sell a few units when they know if it was kept on the PS2 they could keep both their consumers happy and rake in the dough.

I can see the rational to put it on the PS3, but I don't think this LOOKS like a PS3 game. I love Nippon Ichi's style, with simple graphics and insane special effects. However I would love it if they could actually take a few steps towards updating the fucking graphics every now and then.

I'm not saying I want realistic graphics, with sweaty plastic anime characters swinging swords in brown and gray environments. But Nippon Ichi makes so much money on their games it wouldn't kill them to perhaps up the ante a bit, perhaps aim for Odin Sphere or GrimGrimoire style 2D graphics.

So yeah I can see where Jim's coming from a bit. Course I know despite all my belly-aching I'll still pick up the damn game when it comes out. I've never ONCE completed a NIS game, but I just can't help myself. Something about having it in my collection just makes me feel more...I dunno...hardcore? Creepy? Both?

And Bogus with the right answer.

These games thrive on the fucking PS2. It was the logical place.

I was about to say what CCGames Mike just did. This shouldn't be on the PS3 because graphically, it still looks exactly like the PS2 game which didn't exactly have impressive graphics either. If they redid the sprites in HD and made them look like the regular designs (instead of the Super deformed kind) in game, it would belong there. If they aren't going to update the graphics even a little then it might as well be on PS2.

They just want one more exclusive to try and push those fans toward getting a PS3.

I was saying this quite a while ago. This game is going to have about 0 sales, nobody is going to buy a PS3 to play it, especially when it could easily be on PS2.

I'm going to buy it as well. I'll even do so at full price.

Disagea's tactical action is awesome and it's the sort of game you can play over and over and over again.

Of course, I already own a PS3. Given the huge fanbase that Disgaea has I'd imagine this actually might be able to sell a few consoles.

Are you fucking kidding me? DISGAEA ON PS3 WFT???

...well they lost 1 sale. I cant afford a PS3 for a long time, and so until then no Disgaea for me. Its too bad, I love the series and if it was on PS2 I would buy it on launch day

Hey, with me included it's up to 3!

It'll be fun to see what happens when everyone realizes how great the series is, desperately tries to get a copy and realizes that it had a terribly small print run from N1. Then, like last time, I can ponder selling it to the eager for $300 or so.

my money says they'll package the Disgaea Anime with it...that way they utilize the whole dvd and they can sell it for 60 bucks

I'm in, now were at 4 copies. Sure no one's buying a ps3 for this game alone, but when you add up enough games that you want that aren't worth getting a system for you get a system worth owning.

Yeah, I'm with Jim on this one. I don't really see why Disgaea 3 is going to be on the PS3. Honestly I'd be surprised if the game looked like a PS2 game...

i guess that would be a good compromise jeep. that way i'm not feeling like all that 'incredible expansive' space isn't wasted on...PS2 games. Plus I haven't checked out the Disgaea anime yet (yes I'm a terrible person bleh) so including that in the package would make it more tempting...

I like the series.

I want to play the third game in said series.

The third game in said series is for a system I do not own, and will likely never own.

I won't get to play the third game in said series.

Sadface.

I'm really shocked at how many people are surprised at how a game thats been thusfar Sony exclusive is getting a sequel on the ps3, the next logical step. ZOMG. WHO WOULD HAVE KNOWN. Who utilizes next gen hardware, especially when it's been almost a year since it's release.

Suck it up and buy a ps3. Or con a friend into it. I bought a 60 gig for ~$400, not a bad purchase at all.

I liked Disgaea and I would want to buy this. It's a reason to buy the PS3, but I won't buy a PS3 just for one game.

I know people on the NIS America site are begging them to bring it over to the 360 or Wii just because the PS3 is still too expensive, and I thought I heard something from an NISA interview about them being not sure if Disgaea 3 can "pass" SCEA's standards or some nonsense (oh noes teh 2D graphics!!oneone!!)

So don't give up hope just yet, it may multi-plat

Weird decision. There's no way this is going to help the PS3 - Disgaea is just too obscure (not for people obviously, but we're hardcore, rite?).

Seems like they could have put this on the PSP, garnered more sales that way, and helped the handheld out with a great title...

I got a hard horse weiner watching that vid and all those insane tower attacks, but seriously, the PS3? Since they haven't done too much with the graphics, the story mode and bonus dungeons should be absurdly long, or have a cutscene after every level. I mean, they have all that space on the disc, I really hope they utilize it.

As much of a raving NIS fanboy that I am, I'm not buying PS3 for one game. A version of Disgaea on PSP is good enough for me.

Disgaea really is an awsome series... though i have been very disappointed with the graphics being used. I mean, when i first heard disgaea 3 was coming to the PS3, i was thinking of Nippon doing with disgaea 3 as what was done with Street Fighter HD; high resolution spites... but nah, comes out with the same old same old...

The only non-Business reason(giving PS3 more exclusives) i could see for bringing disgaea to PS3 is prehaps to reduce slow down. don't remember if it happened with some of magic in the previous disaea games, but i do know that sprite games can suffer from series lag if there's too much shit that's going on... and that disgaea 3 video had everything playing very smoothly... however, at those low graphics i'm not sure if it would be a problem since i don't remember the games clearly enough, nor do i think it would prevent them from releasing on the PS2... one thing i haven't found out yet is for a game like Odin Sphere, if the lag that goes on in that game still occurs while playing the game on the PS3... though on the other hand, with Sony pushing away from BC nippon couldn't rely on a PS2 game being able to be played on the PS3 (however, the choice to make it a PS3 game came way before that news, so that's a rather moot point)

Well to the question of why its on a Bluray instead of a PS2 DVD, I would guess because it has HD video in the length of or exceeding a DVD standard. Hope that answers your question, it has nothing to do with the graphics but the amount of cutscenes they can do.
