Discountoid: Black Friday 2008 photo

I love the smell of commerce in the morning.

Ever since I first started working in retail all those years ago, Black Friday has been my favorite day of the year. The lines of people banging at the gates, waiting to consume en masse, willing to do just about anything to save some cash on their holiday shopping, fill my soul with something I can only identify as patriotism. The raw energy of the day is just thrilling. I've never once shopped on that day, however. That could be suicide.

For those of you braver (or just more patient) than I, I present to you this year's roundup of smokin' hot Black Friday deals. Click on past the jump and observe the glory. And, just for fun, I'll give you some trivia on the most American holiday of them all.

Here's my picks for the best deals this Black Friday. Several retailers (such as Wal-Mart and Toys R Us) have negligible offerings at best and have been left off. If you want an exhaustive rundown, visit our friends over at Cheapass Gamer, where they have a fantastic list of everything the retailers have on sale.

amazon

Software Discounts

  • Fallout 3 [360/PS3] - $39.95 ($20 savings)
  • Fallout 3 [PC] - $29.95 ($20 savings)
  • Soul Calibur IV [PS3] - $39.95 ($20 savings)
  • Animal Crossing: City Folk Bundle [Wii]- $39.95 ($30 savings, Ends 11/30)

Best Buy

Software Discounts

  • Soul Calibur IV [PS3] - $37.99 ($22 savings)
  • Far Cry 2 [360] - $37.99 ($22 savings)
  • House of the Dead 2 & 3 Return [Wii] - $19.99 ($10 savings)
FUN FACT: While "Black Friday" has become popularly known as the day in which retailers finally become profitable for the year, that's not where the term actually originates. Police in Philidelphia coined the phrase to describe the heavy traffic on the day. The term was first applied in 1966.

Circuit City

Software Discounts

  • Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway [360/PS3] - $19.99 ($40 savings)
  • Cooking Mama: Cook Off [Wii] - $19.99 ($30 savings)
  • Okami [Wii] - $19.99 ($20 savings)

Hardware Discounts

  • Xbox 360 Arcade Bundle, 20 Gb hard drive and headset - $199.99 ($50 savings)

Game Crazy

Software Discounts

Buy 2 Get 1 Free on all Used Titles

FUN FACT: Most people believe that Black Friday is the biggest shopping day of the year. This is rarely the case. The most successful day for retail (both in terms of sales and traffic) is, traditionally, the Saturday before Christmas.

GameStop

Software Discounts

  • World of Warcraft Battle Chest [PC] - $19.99

Gift with Purchase Promotions

  • Any Rock Band bundle or game (priced $49.99+) - get Rock Band Track Pack for $0.99 with purchase.

Target

Software Discounts

  • Boom Blox [Wii] - $20.00 ($19.99 savings)
  • Dead Space [360/PS3] - $30.00 ($29.99 savings)
FUN FACT: In 1939, while the US was caught in the grip of The Great Depression, retailers desired an extension of the holiday shopping season to improve profits but did not want to change the practice of the post-Thanksgiving sales marking its start. To help them, President Franklin Roosevelt moved the date of Thanksgiving forward one week, amid much controversy.

I have a feeling it won't be that hard to go to Target and get Dead Space for $30, maybe I'm being ignorant, but it seems like most people won't go at the crack of dawn for that deal. At least I hope!

After reading Amaru's comment, I went to Fry's to look for deals. It isn't exactly game related, but I did find, a deal, it's today only, Sony Vegas 9, for free, with two $30 rebates.

Also GameStop (among the other little deals) is having the whole Buy Two Used, Get One Free, and Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway for $20. I just thought those would be fairly good deals (although the second one it seems like everyone is taking part in).

Hmmm, I'm liking the Far Cry 2 deal and I wouldn't mind picking up Dead Rising when it's 10 bucks.

I've worked retail on Black Friday; truly one of humanity's darkest displays.

Hopefully I can do in store pickup for Fallout 3 PC. That's a pretty good deal.

I'm working Black Friday at GameStop, however since we're right next to a large university and all the students go home, we'll be dead that day.

I worked at a movie theater for 3-4 years, and black Friday was our crappiest day....all of the parents drop off their kids to watch a movie while they run around town to shop...leaving us to babysit.

Holy crap AnimaLux, I know what you're about to go through. I worked 8+ years in retail. Black Friday is only fun if you're drinking BEFORE you greet customers (wonder why I'm not in retail anymore?)
God speed to you, kind sir.

As a GameStop employee I can say first hand that all of our Black Friday deals suck.

Only good deals:

Mario limited edition DS with big "M" on its face.
50% off PSP Pro Duo mem sticks.
Buy 2 Get 1 Free on all used games.

And that last one isn't really a Black Friday deal, it's been going for a day or so and'll continue after Friday. It's a deal GameStop launches every two months or so. :P

Left 4 Dead for $30? I'm so going to target.

Or rather, Dead Space for $30 that I can exchange at Wal-Mart for $60 store credit without a receipt that I can instantly use toward the purchase of Left 4 Dead? I'm so going to target, then Wal-Mart.
