Disaster report: Sony pulls firmware 2.40 after user complaints photo

It appears that the second coming, Sony's recent PlayStation 3 firmware update 2.40, has been having some issues. Reports have rolled in that after updating to the latest version of the software -- which provides in-game XMB and support for the achievement-like trophies, among other things -- consoles have been rendered inoperable.

This has been affecting systems of all shapes and sizes, with no obvious pattern that's yet to emerge. Some brave users have removed and reformatted their hard drives, which seems to have done the trick. But Sony have a better option -- they've pulled down the update altogether.

"In order to further assess the issue," SCEA said in a statement today, "we have temporarily taken the firmware offline for further testing. We are working diligently to isolate the problem for thsoe few consumers and to identify a solution before we put the firmware back up."

My system (knock on wood) has had no issues after the update, but I only marveled at in-game XMB for about five minutes before turning off my console and going to bed. I will attempt to unlock some Super Stardust HD trophies later tonight (I have to hear that sound it makes), and I'm crossing my fingers I don't run into any issues.

Do any of our readers have nice, shiny new door stops as a result of firmware 2.40, or do you think these reports are greatly exaggerated?

No problems at all here, I dont know why people are saying "I am glad I didnt update because bla bla bla"... pretty much everyone with this "problem" seems to have done it to their self. I was reading that some one even turned off their console during the update...

But... I am not saying that some people have just had a freak accident, and if you have... that sucks.

Other than that ANY f/w upgrade in anything is risky. I am loving the update and glad I got it in time before it was pulled (seriously... it was pulled?!) I guess we will be seeing 2.41 soon.

From what I understand, if you got past the installation there should be no further problems.

Also, no problems here.

Actually, I'm thinking there's a security breach here people.
Expect custom firmware on PS3 very soon. :D

It's ironic really that as I have no internet at home, I haven't updated my PS3. But yesterday, my 360 got a Hardware failure (error 74).

:(

I updated and have had one issue. When I tried to use the quit game option from the game crossbar (to quit Super Stardust) the console locked up. I just restarted it and it was fine. Otherwise I suspect that people have been turning their PS3s off during the update. Its just like when you update Windows and the machine takes 3-4 minutes during the restart. Its not a 10 second deal, and I think when the screen goes dark people think its crashed. I was looking at the little green LED on the front which kept flashing so I knew it was still responding. A really easy way to brick your console is to turn it off while its updating and I'm not saying thats the entire problem, but I think a message thats on the screen saying not to restart for at least 5 minutes or a progress bar might help.

I haven't been having any issues- there do seem to be a # of ppl though on the sony forums that have had issues- i don't know if that is a result of lot of ppl on the sony forums being the ones that had issues or if it is an indication the EVEN thoseon the son'y forums had issues- hopefully we can get some numbers at some point in the near future to see....
