Disaster report: Sony pulls firmware 2.40 after user complaints photo

It appears that the second coming, Sony's recent PlayStation 3 firmware update 2.40, has been having some issues. Reports have rolled in that after updating to the latest version of the software -- which provides in-game XMB and support for the achievement-like trophies, among other things -- consoles have been rendered inoperable.

This has been affecting systems of all shapes and sizes, with no obvious pattern that's yet to emerge. Some brave users have removed and reformatted their hard drives, which seems to have done the trick. But Sony have a better option -- they've pulled down the update altogether.

"In order to further assess the issue," SCEA said in a statement today, "we have temporarily taken the firmware offline for further testing. We are working diligently to isolate the problem for thsoe few consumers and to identify a solution before we put the firmware back up."

My system (knock on wood) has had no issues after the update, but I only marveled at in-game XMB for about five minutes before turning off my console and going to bed. I will attempt to unlock some Super Stardust HD trophies later tonight (I have to hear that sound it makes), and I'm crossing my fingers I don't run into any issues.

Do any of our readers have nice, shiny new door stops as a result of firmware 2.40, or do you think these reports are greatly exaggerated?

yeah at least it's free and we get cross game invites on ps3! and voice chat across games! oh and custom soundtracks! oh yeah wait we don't. i've been waiting for this update and seems i'll just have to keep waiting there is not one feature that screams wow. and are we really getting excited because sony decided to retroactively give us gamerpoints?

No issues here as well but I'm not going to discount the ones that are having problems. If PS3s are turning inoperable then Sony needs to address this ASAP.

Also Nick, the sound of a Trophy, which I got a few for reporting reasons *cough* I couldn't even tell you because SSD HD's music and sound effects covered them for me.You may want to lower the music or take it off altogether if you really are that curious..lol.

I don't own a PS3 but from what I can gather its a pretty small percentage of users that are experiencing this problem.

Why the hell can't companies guard against this? This happens way too often. You'd think that they'd do more testing to make sure this wouldn't happen.

Mine is still alive, thank God and whomever has a hand in my luck. I own a 80GB PS3 and, other than being kicked out of the PSN once, no problems on my end.

If anyone bricked, exactly when was it? Did it died immediately after install, or during download, or did it took a while into gaming to kick in?

Ironically, I use it more to watch DVD's than to games themselves... sorry Snake, but I grew nostalgic for the Batman films halfway into my second run through your Ragnarok...

This being the internet, 3 people is like eleventy billion people. I realize enough people have had problems, so much so that Sony took down the update. But rtard gamers have to realize the world isn't perfect, sometimes shit doesn't work the way its supposed to. I know its shocking but its true. OMG the world isn't perfect? No way when did this happen? Yes you can be upset, even angry, but does that solve your issue? Most likely not. It might make you feel better venting your issues into cyberspace but at the end of it all you'll be at the same spot you were to begin with.

Has anyone here actually had problems with a 2.40 update? Other than the in-game XMB being a little laggy and slow to load, the battery status icon covering up the clock in-game, and not being able to change the clock display beyond setting 12- or 24-hour time, obviously.
