Disaster report redux: Sony mum on 2.40 tragedy photo

Can you hear that? No, I don’t mean the fireworks. Underneath the cacophony of explosive bliss and national pride, Sony is suspiciously quiet. Perhaps entirely too quiet about their failed attempt at launching their new 2.40 firmware, which was supposed to give users the ability to have access to in-game XMB and the new Trophies system. Instead of cool features, it only bricked consoles. Because of the problems, Sony pulled the update two days ago.

After a series of inquiries about the progress of 2.40 to Sony, CVG solicited a response of:

No further update.

The response is entirely too little, and way late. Brave users that experienced issues have had to manually reformat their harddrive, while everyone else is left looking at a dead console. It’s like the Xbox 360’s “red ring of death,” except less common -- and the solution isn’t wrapping towels around the poor thing.

So, we ask, how many of you have been stranded with a bricked console? If you did experience this issue, what is Sony doing to alleviate your issue? Also, how many of you are now afraid of even updating to a revision whenever the smoke clears? I know I won’t be trying anything anytime soon.

[Thanks, Joe!]

So glad I didn't touch that update!

According to a gaf thread (last time I checked), it was something like a 200:1 ratio (200 successful 2.40 upgrades to one brick).

Of course the test sample would need to be greater, that's only a 0.5% failure rate given current sample group. That's acceptable when you consider other factors like bad hardware (hard drive) or user error (or even power failure) which could contribute to that number of bricked consoles.

There are no real problems with 2.40, but it's rate of bricking consoles might be higher than past firmwares, which is why Sony pulled and is re-evaluating the code.

Actually, the real reason Sony puled 2.40 is it was found to cause cancer in lab rats.

It was hardly a massive problem, as everyone keeps implying. And as Qraze said, you're flamebaiting with that article.

My PS3 is working perfectly fine thanks.

As for the update, what were you expecting? When Sony has news, you'll get news. Yes its a pisser not everyone can get 2.4 now but you're slagging Sony for having no news to give? Come on.

Also, haven't noticed any trophy noise. Not sure why, don't really care, update seems fairly good so far, except for the crappy position of the clock!

To comments for the "article":

Apparently it doesn't just brick PS3s. That feature doesn't seem to work on mine. I'm stuck with what appears to be a better-than-Xbox interface right now.

Also, while it's a serious issue, it's hard to compare it to the RROD issue. You can't prevent the RROD with a patch. The only comparable things to RROD are DualShock3's late release and pulling full PS2 compatability from select models. Neither are game-breaking flaws, but they were total facepalm moments for Sony.

All this fanboy crap is childish.

Updated my PS3 on the night the FW was released and it has worked fine ever since. Got a 60GB too, but I don't think this incident is console version specific.

Also, it's not entirely -widespread- either, but I can understand why Sony pulled it to do more testing. Imagine, if you will, that a small portion of a consumer crowd found a small problem with a product but that problem was not really crippling the consumer in question, but merely inconveniencing them and doesn't seem to be able to affect everyone else in the process. If you could issue that fix right away via some update then Sony would not have pulled it.

However, since the issue does affect people at random (regardless of the small number affected) and has the potential to REALLY wreck up the userbase considering you cant plan who it will hit next the product needed to be recalled and retooled so that the issue can be found and dealt with.

Better to have pulled it before it committed a worse case scenario and bricked half the userbase (even though there was no evidence that it would.)

It's being cautious and a rather consumer-minded approach to trying to fix the problem rather than deny it (RRoD issues) or refuse to release a better quality product (RRoD issues again).

lol one person out of everyone who posted here has had this problem.

Oh yeah, it's exactly the same as an RROD.

Slow news days much?

2.4 worked great for me, but yesterday afternoon I booted it up and my HDMI output stopped working. Tried a different cable, my 360 works fine in the same input on the TV, so its not my TV or the cables. I tried resetting the video settings like instructed over the phone by holding the power button down when it was turning on to no avail. I got the standard a/v cables that came with the PS3 and used those and it worked fine, so I'll be sending it in to get the HDMI output fixed, bourns.

If's official: Everyone at Destructoid hates Sony. There was not, in fact, an issue with 2.4 firmware that caused issues with some (but not many) user's hardware. Also, Sony has actually responded to this with something other than "We've noticed some issues. We're working on it. No updates," and we just refuse to report it.

I'm going to go play Super Stardust HD on my PS3 so I can get some of those trophies now. I didn't have an issue with my update, but it's likely because Sony knows how much we hate them, and didn't want to upset us further.

When it comes to updates be it for my PS3 or my Nvidia 8800 GTS or Vista I just sit on it for a couple of days. When I haven't things always go south.

My PStriple is fine. But I noticed that out of several of my games that I've tested including MGS4, GTAIV, Virtua Fighter 5, Rock Band(Just testing, guys), and Warhawk, none of them let me play music in-game. That's all I really cared about here, since like two games use trophies right now.

I'll test my other games later today, but did anyone else notice this?

mine works fine, but when i used the in game xmb to exit GTA4(or was it pain?) the ps3 beeped and reset instead of going to the menu, but only happened once. works fine now

Mine updated fine, found the in game XMB a little sluggish starting up, but it was nice. I haven't turned on my PS3 since the news of trouble though. I'm going to wait until sony fixes the problem then get on to update (again) just in case.

The only thing I hear is your anti-Sony bias. 2.4 works great on my PS3. Shame on you guys.

The update went smoothly and I haven't seen so much as a hiccup since installing 2.4. I had issues with randomly logging out of PSN before the update, but I attribute that more to my connection than anything.

by the time I got home to get my 2.4 fix, Sony already pulled it out. I perused the intarwebz and found a copy on NeoGaf forums...and I did an offline update. in-game XMB is so awesome.

Russian Roulette is my other hobby, BTW.

Why is it that when someone has some bad news that's dealing with one's electronic equipment, suddenly someone's biased? Are you people listening to yourself or is the pain distracting you from your stupidity?

Honestly, why do even care if someone is biased towards another console? Not saying that's ever the case with Destructoid, it's just fucking pathetic. You'd think they were talking about your children, you bunch of lame ass weirdos.

Go get some friends.

I havn't had any problems yet. I don't know anyone on my friends list who has had problems either. I think this may be due to everyone going for 2.40 at once causing alot of people to lose connection while downloading causing a bad form of 2.40. Maybe, but thats just a guess.

I downloaded my update a day or two after release from a 3rd party site that hosted the file. My 60GB PS3 updated to 2.40 without a hitch. My only concern, however, was the final installation process that skipped from roughly 60% to 100% almost instantly.

Just back-up the console HD to an external HD and go for it...what have you got to lose? ** apparently the recovery process shown above involves hooking up your PS3 drive to a SATA equipped PC **
