I know, you reread my post title a few times, didn't you? That's some seriously unsure terminology if I've ever heard it. It came straight from the mouth of Hajime Tabata, the game's director (he is also working on the PSP title Final Fantasy Agito XIII). In a recent interview with Famitsu, he states that The 3rd Birthday "isn’t exactly a “true” third-person shooter". But it's being called a third person shooter? What?
If you're a Square fan like me, you're probably already having frightening flashbacks of Dirge of Cerebus, but I am hoping for better. We now also know that the game begins in Manhattan, where you fight creatures called the Twisted, who have arrived in New York through some sort of crazy time schism.
Most interesting of all to me is a comment about Aya's age from Scenario director Motomu Toriyama. As you may have noticed, she is looking rather young for her stated age (she is 35 in The 3rd Birthday). Toriyama commented that it was "difficult to make a woman in her mid-thirties the main attraction for any video game". Wow. Hey ladies, you know after thirty, you become utterly devoid of worth, right?
The 3rd Birthday will be released later this year (the date is currently TBA).

I think they're labeling pe3 as a 3rd person shooter, because thats what sells, but if the past games are any clue, it will most likely be a very odd action rpg mixture, thats hard to label, just like the past 2 PE games. If they want to call it a 3rd person shooter to increase interest, thats fine by me, as long as its damn fun, and got some crazy mitochrondriatic powers, of course some rpg stat leveling.
Also:
HOT TIP: A new game called "Barbara Cartwright: Modern Nazi Hunter: Trouble on the Amazon" will be staring a hot MILF that tracks down Nazi and kills them... WITH HER LAP DOG, a Shih Tzu named Vengeance.
In pe2 they stated that her powers are slowing her aging, and that she will probably get younger over time.
So there is an actual story reason for this.
Scenario director Motomu Toriyama has said it can be difficult to make a woman in her mid-30s the main attraction in any video game, and unfortunately, we do have to agree.
Wow! That's quite an ... er ... interesting perspective. I'd love to know why they can possibly agree with that. If it was suddenly announced that Lara Croft is actually 38, would that somehow matter?
Now before people say the early resident evil games were not 3rd person shooters, they need to shut the fuck up, because thats what 3rd person shooters were like back in the day.
I like how square decided to remake star ocean 1 (and port star ocean 2, that ain't no remake) on the psp. Good way to introduce the young'uns to the 32bit rpg era, and to increase interest in the series. They should do the same thing with parasite eve.
In fact, I was enjoying the idea of her aging slightly whilst everyone else was damn old.
Sadly in other news women gamers across the world were crushed by a falling glass ceiling.
Have game designers learned NOTHING from Chell, Faith, Zoey, etc.
I see what you mean - and I agree. That's not a "shooter" per se, but it certainly is how a lot of games played not too long ago.
Sure if it was purely a gameplay/lore/story reason fine, but clearly its not if he's making comments like that.
Of course if your main audience is loli loving japanese men, then i guess it would be hard to sell them a 35 year old woman thrice the age they would want to *beep*.
Now did Square used her powers as an excuse to keep her young looking, maybe, I don't know, they probably did though.
I also never thought of Aya as a barbie doll character.
Plus you should check out how aya looked in pe1 vs in pe2, its noticeable she got more womanly, and this one clip is really hard to determine how she looks age wise. I think we need to see more before we can pass judgement.
If she looks younger than in pe2,i'm fine with that, because story-wise it makes sense. If they didn't I would be miffed about the lack of consistency.
Excluding of course games like Disgaea where Laharl, Flonne and Etna were over 1,000.
Did you know: The average modeling career is over by age 21?
I know, that sounds like pretty much the worst thing ever.
I'm not sure how to take the comment about Aya's age; in the context of the American media it doesn't make much sense-- women don't become 'worthless' in entertainment until after about 45 nowadays. Look at a movie like X3, Famke Jannsen and Halle Berry were both 40+ in that movie, and widely considered some of the most attractive women alive. There are a lot of other examples I could list.
However, in the context of the JAPANESE market, I'm really not sure. In Toriyama's defense, I think he may have been saying that games starring older women are hard to market to the Japanese public, regardless of how he and his team may feel about it. It was about the realities of marketing undercutting innovation.
Basically, if I assume that he was referring specifically to the Japanese market, he doesn't sound like a dick:).
The japanese have a problem with showing aged characters in their media overall. Its a cultural thing, but despite this they should try to buck the trend a bit, especially if they are gonna be looking to sell it outside of japan. just saying a character is a teenage detective etc isn't gonna fly.
I wonder if the truth is that they have a hard time modeling aged characters, and young, clean lined characters are an easy way out.
Maybe what we need someone to do is Benjamin Button type rpg, where all the characters are old and get younger as the game progresses.
Either way. I'll still be buying PE3, for more 3rd person rpg action.
