Digital download Watchmen games coming to retail (Update) photo

In an interview with 1UP, Deadline Games’ Søren Lund confirmed that their Watchmen games -- a brawler in two parts for Xbox LIVE and PlayStation Network -- will be coming to retail.

According to Lund, the disc will likely ship alongside (or close to) the film’s DVD and Blu-Ray release, scheduled for a July 21 release. The game’s publisher, Warner Bros., has told 1UP more details on the disc should be coming soon.

Watchmen: The End is Nigh hit consoles as a digital download in early March, to coincide with the release of the film. I was forced to play through the repetitive brawler’s six chapters for our review. That was quite enough to make me not want to play the still unreleased second game, which I can only imagine will be more of the same. You can only fight the same two fat and skinny dudes for so long, you know?

The smartest thing Warner Bros. can do with this disc is sell it at a low price point, and  include enough Watchmen fan-service content to make it worth anyone’s while. Otherwise, GameStop is going to be sitting on a lot of used copies of these things by August.

[Update: Warner has officially unveiled this, with a "Complete Experience" Blu-ray movie/game combo on two-discs, and the single-game DVD for Xbox 360. Both are shipping in July. Details -- but no pricing -- after the jump]

  • Watchmen: The End is Nigh The Complete Experience is an innovative, retail Blu-ray Hi-Def game and film hybrid which will include Watchmen: The End is Nigh  Parts 1 and 2 and the Watchmen: Director’s Cut on Blu-ray. This new cut of the action-packed blockbuster includes an additional 25 minutes of footage not seen in theaters only available on Blu-ray and DVD.  The two-disc collectible set will also feature exclusive artwork in a premium package. The game will be playable on the PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system which can also play the Blu-ray disc of Watchmen:  Director’s Cut.
  • Watchmen: The End is Nigh Parts 1 and 2 will now be available for the first time as a single game available for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft.
  • Watchmen: The End is Nigh Part 2 will be available for download on Xbox LIVE® Arcade for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft and for PlayStation®Network.

I already have the game from XBLA, but if the price is low I may snag it. It was a fun game, though repetitive. But that is what I liked about it; it reminded me a lot of old school brawlers.

@JerinsFury:

My problem wasn't that the gameplay itself was bad; it wasn't. The brawling was pretty tight, and crushing people's windpipes or whatever never really got old. Loved the finishers. It was just sooooo repetitive, which is normally not a huge issues with these games. But there were very few style thugs (fat, skinny) and one boss fight across six levels (towards the game's end). Had they thrown in a bit more variety, maybe a boss-style battle at the end of each chapter, it might have been more tolerable.

Despite everyone's irrational hatred of the first part(for "bastardizing" the source material or whatever), it was fun. Also pretty.

yeah, I liked it too. played through with both characters and still play random levels from time to time. The graphics were amazing and they actually got the real actors to lay down voice tracks. look forward to part 2, some Dr Manhattan people popping would be fun!

When is the next "episode" coming out? Thats what I want to know.

In local co-op, things never got too repetitive for me. Whipping some ass with a friend never gets old to me. I could see the single player experience becoming a drag though. Mini bosses would have helped break up the pace as they do in most beat em ups.

Oh good, another chance to "miss the point". Really, if they were going to go the action-route with Watchmen, they would have been better off following the Comedian. His story is the larger arc throughout, and it would fit the cynical nature of the comic to have you play as the "bad guy". Shit, it would fit the tone perfectly if the game ends where the comic/film story begins and you can't win the last boss fight.

Oh, and you can't call "spoilers" on something that is over twenty years old. So don't.

Tried the demo. Liked what story and cut scenes appeared in it. I wanted to keep on playing but $20 was a bit too much for me. I might pick this up new depending on pricing. If it's too high, I'll just wait for it to drop down in price and buy used.

But, I want Watchmen on Blu-Ray and The End is Nigh for 360. Is that wrong?
