Diesel got the inspiration to launch Tigon from Steven Spielberg photo

You get the sense, when you hear Vin Diesel talk about videogames, that Hollywood isn’t the best place to proclaim your love of digital shenanigans. Diesel, now the owner of Tigon Studios -- responsible for the upcoming Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena -- didn’t enter into the videogame fray until he met Steven Spielberg on the set of World War II flick, Saving Private Ryan.

“When I did Saving Private Ryan I had the great pleasure of working with Steven Spielberg,” Diesel told an interviewer participating in a conference call Friday afternoon. “When I realized Steven Spielberg was entering the game world unabashedly, somehow that gave me the ‘green card’ to launch a videogame company that would speak to a favorite pastime -- or one of my favorite pastimes.”

Diesel’s pen and paper game roots are well known. Diesel has been on record multiple times, proclaiming an earlier self as a Dungeons and Dragons geek. But during the conference call, Diesel also gave us a taste of how he got into true videogames and what he appreciates the most.

Hit the break for it.

“... as a kid in New York City -- when we were in grade school -- the way that we played videogames is we would go into Radioshack and play T.V. Pong," Diesel continued. "That was the first introduction to videogames. Then that grew to Galaga, Space Invaders, Donkey Kong and Pac-Man -- that was an arcade experience. Then we got Atari, Coleco, all the games you could actually feel that arcade experience at home.”

But before all that -- before games had the ability to assimilate a Dungeons and Dragons experience -- you know, as we ‘jumpcut’ to games like World of Warcraft -- it was Dungeons and Dragons. To be one hundred percent honest, where did my videogame appreciation come from? Probably Gary Gygax.

Diesel is popping up everywhere lately. This was a nice-short read.

I'm unashamed to admit that I enjoy Vin Diesel as an actor and I am excited at the prospect that Tigon Studios represents.

I thought Vin Diesel founded Tigon way back when in order to make the first Riddick game? Or am I mistaken here.

I've always enjoyed Vin Diesel and whatever he is involved with. He does what he does and when I'm in the mood for it I enjoy it. Also Pitch Black was a fantastic movie imho since to me it was completely out of the blue and had a great atmosphere.

Here is a cool recently posted interview on Gametrailers with Vin:

I want to steal his voice and put it in a seashell around my neck, Little Mermaid style.

Tigon was founded in 2002 by Diesel. Butcher Bay was released in 2004. Tigon is a production based company wherein they send people to help supervise the product. The full out coding is done primarily by Starbreeze or any other developer for the product, and members of Tigon help out with some coding and advising/direction. And at the top of Tigon is Diesel with the most say on what is to be put in game.

Tigon games include: The Wheelman, CoR: Escape from Butcher Bay, CoR: Assault on Dark Athena, Secret Service, Perrone: Raised on Honor, Melkor, Barca B.C.

I totally forgot he was in that movie. Huh. Looks like I'll have to watch it again.

So I'm guessing The Wheelman is somehow a Tigon product, no?

Am I missing some joke regarding Spielberg's name being misspelled in the headline?

It's great that geeks are infiltrating our society, becoming more of the norm. Just wish we had a better spokesperson in Hollywood :p Okay, I kid, I kid. Just wish he hadn't done The Pacifier and that he wasn't type-casted already so early in his career.

Heh, i saw a youtube video from a random link by a friend, Vin diesel was stealing a car from a rich smock and did a audio/video broadcast in the stolen car to presumably the rich dude, i love the line: "You wan't to remove video games Dick?, c'mon, that's the only education we got..!" my memory is a little dull since i didn't bookmark the video but it was pretty funny when it ended in Vin diesel driving the car of a bride and pulls a parachute.
