Did you know you could send MS Points to friends? Well you can't anymore! photo

I honestly didn't know that you could send Microsoft Points to your friends outside of hearing vague plans, but then again, considering the whole process was very typical of Microsoft -- in that it was unnecessarily complicated and controlled -- that's hardly a surprise. Not that it matters anymore, however, since Microsoft has canned the whole project.

The system was in beta for a while, and wasn't all that convenient anyway, since you couldn't send points from one Gamertag to another. You needed the linked Windows Live ID before doing anything else. Like I said, typical Microsoft, although apparently the team was working on a way of sending points direct. Not anymore, it would seem, as the ability to gift MS Points at all has disappeared.

I hate Microsoft's Moon Money with a passion. I think they're arbitrary, unnecessary, and just a way of Microsoft exhibiting more power and control over its consumers like some sort of possessive husband. The fact you can't even gift them does very little to endear the nasty little buggers to me.

LAME!

I wanted to do this. I had some extra MS points and I wanted to send them. It's so stupid to not be able to.

I can gift Wii points or VC games to friends. You know what I'm going to go buy? Wii points.

That would have just been too convenient.

I bought Street Fighter II Remix for my little brother last Thanksgiving, not knowing that my credit card information was going to be held hostage on his system with no way to remove it.

Thanks Microsoft for proving once again why you simply do not give a flying fuck about your customer base.

They took away this ability almost a year ago. Still, it's quite disappointing.

The points system exists for one sole reason.

MS NEVER wants to be a reseller of software since that implies thay have to give support and refunds for the actual games/programs.

Instead they sell you points, that is the only actual purchase. Once the points have been bought MS only acts a storage-location for the software you then "exchange" for your points. No factual or legally binding purchases are made for the actual software and through this legal loophole MS doesn't have to take responsability for the software itself and you're left alone with no-one to contact should you have issues regarding the software itself.

I think the logic behind points is you do not equate them to actual cash because they arent. Instead you use "points" like chips at a casino. That way you do not directly think how much you are spending on a title or theme.

this news is neither surprising or really has any impact on me personally, I was only drawn to comment because of the picture.

MS points are interest-free loans to Microsoft. But they're even worse than gift cards because you can't buy points in any sane amount (Like in increments of $5).

M$ steals from their consumers at every turn. Bad products (xbox, xbox360) Bad software (windows Vista, Win 7 lookin like it should be a free service pack but HEY! it works so lets charge full price for it like its a whole new OS.) and xbox live (no you can't give points to others because if we did that it would circumvent our pricing structure designed to make you pay more for software than you normally would).

I will NEVER pay for a M$ product again! I have been through 2 original xboxes, one 360 (working right now but has red ringed twice after the warranty) and multiple OS's (since 3.1 mofos!) They have stole from me enough and it's PAYBACK TIME! I have a working copy of vista on a second computer that IS A PIRATE COPY! My copy of XP on this rig is PIRATED! I will pirate Win 7 when it comes out. Whats worse? I spend hours upon hours showing everyone that will give me their time how to pirate anything M$ touches. Wanna learn how to flash the dvd drive on your 360? I'm your guy. Want to know where to get that copy of Halo 3 for free? Just lemme know when you got a free hour and I will teach you.

I figure I am into M$ for around 2k$. They abandon me with the faulty xbox (I should buy a new one, its been over 3 years) and the service pack they are gonna shill as a new OS are the final straw.

Fuck you M$, it's on! I will cost you hundreds of thousands of dollars and I hope more like me will do the same.

The Edge review is microshit!

Oh wait..

Actually, i wish i had known that you could transfer points. I was forced to make a uk account when i moved here from NZ because apparently ms points bought in uk dont work on nz accounts. However, all my previous games were linked to my nz account.

Problematic.

Ah well.

At the very least you should be able to send purchases to other gamertags as like gifts. Then the property is transferred over to them.

Kinda like Steam does.

Fuck MS Points. So I lived in the States, moved to Canada. Guess what? I can purchase an Xbox Live card to avoid my account cancellation, but when I bought MS Points last week, it said "Code Not Valid." After 20 minutes waiting on the phone, I get an MS customer rep. Do you know what his solution was? Sell my card to a friend here, and get a friend from the US to buy one for me. WTF kind of solution is that? So I politely asked for a supe.

The Supervisor gave me another solution, which is to make a Silver acct and add the points to it, then buy it and I would be able to use them for my other acct as well. Fine and dandy, but that means that the points and the DLC are tied to my Silver acct and not my Gold, so if my 360 breaks (impossible, I know) I'm pretty much SOL. Why the fuck can't you just switch countries for your account? How hard can it be?

Agree.

Especially, considering you never really "buy" anything from that damn store - you just rent until your 360 bricks itself.

I was playing 360 for a while - would spend my money on MS Points and get pointless shit like avatars and arcade games that I never played.

Then I finally got enough together to get a decent PC again, and I'm like "holy shit, I actually can get little pictures next to my name, FOR FREE!?"

Unheard of, I know...

Sure MS Points suck but it's not like Wii Points were any better. It's all just a method to make the $ sign disappear after the number. That way people are more likely to spend the stuff and that's the idea behind it.

How do developers send you points for your Community Games reviews? Or do they just paypal you the cash equivalent?

Slow news day?

I just love posts like this... go all ninja on a company for some minor features that most people wouldn't care about anyway and watch the lemmings fall in line, ranting and raving about every perceived slight.

Eh I only use the points when I want to get DLC...then its just a matter of buying them online. That part doesnt bother me..

..its the fact that online you still only have the option of of buying 500, 1000, 2000 etc. which is why they price everything at 800, 1200 etc...so you have to buy a greater amount of points than you actually need.

But meh, I knew what I was getting into when I bought a 360 so bother bitching about it.
