Did Xbox 360 wireless adapters get a stealth price drop? photo

Even though the new-and-improved Xbox 360 wireless N adapter is supposedly going to cost $99.99 whenever it inevitably gets released, the standard 802.11b model available today hasn't budged in price. Well, at least not officially.

Microsoft may still be charging a premium fee for the device, but a few online retailers seem to have given it a price drop. As stumbled upon by my co-worker Ben, the adapters can be found for nearly $75 (closer to $80 when shipping is included).

Whether this is a temporary thing or not remains to be seem, but for the time being, it's a decent start. The fact that I moved my wireless router into my living room next to my Xbox 360 and brought wireless cards for my PCs in order to save money should be proof enough that these things are overpriced.

I bought one from Hong Kong off eBay for £30. You can very easily do the same. Works excellently.

Be careful, it's possible that if it's a pirated one that it won't work with the new update. I've also heard of people getting banned for using Hard Drives from China.

All part of MS's scheme to suck the money out of our pockets.

Bleh, I'm not one to get angry at any company for trying to make money, and I own the current wireless adapter, but fuck me. I can't afford to spend $60 for every new game that's released on top of all of the additional nickel and diming that's thrown my way with almost every major console.

It's probably why I'm stuck on my Wii and the last generation.

Correction, the wireless adapter is not just 802.11b, it supports 802.11a, 802.11b and 802.11g. B is kind of last last gen.

They also need to lower the price in those hard drives

Yeah, the current adapter is 802.11g, not 802.11b and it was also rumored last month (and I believe posted on ars technica) that the 802.11g adapter was going to see a permanent price drop to $79.99. Even at that price, it's still way too much money.

Have you thought about trying a rental service like GameFly? That would take care of having to pay $60 a game, unless it's one you actually want to own. I very rarely go out and buy games anymore providing there isn't a sale or some type of promotional deal going on. Even then, I don't hesitate to buy a used copy when I can find it. Or hey, if renting isn't your thing have you looked up Goozex? It's a company that lets people trade titles with one another. I haven't tried it myself but I've heard plenty of people say that it's a very good service and trustworthy.

Anyone else see the header image and get excited thinking this was a followup with Specter on a possible Ducktales game? :(

Glad to see it's dropped down to "almost-semi-affordable" now.

thats still stupidly overpriced, thank god I found a workaround because I was getting sick of my brother asking (there was a hole closet that no one noticed till now so we moved the thing to the closest room to the network and pluged it in).

silver member abuse here I come.

My 360 is still hardwired to my router, so I don't have to worry about getting one. That's still way too much though.

Dtoid has heard that there should be a 802.11n wireless adapter coming out soon, right? Microsoft is marking down the old one to make room for that, the new one should be back up at $100.

It's been selling on Amazon for around $75 for the past year or so. The only reason I have one is because I had a gift card.

Still %200-300 higher than a comparable PC adapter. Why the gouging, Microsoft? You already make people by their consoles piecemeal. Lower the freaking prices, already.

Damn, no edit button. That's 200-300% and "buy".
