Did Blizzard just confirm Diablo III on consoles? photo

If taken at face value, a casual Tweet from Blizzard community manager "Bashiok" has confirmed a Diablo III console release. Of course, the very casual nature of the confirmation makes it a little puzzling.

Bashiok was responding to a fan, who asked if he could confirm a console port. The community man happily obliged, stating: "Yup. Josh Mosqueira is lead designer for the Diablo console project."

Blizzard has in the past confirmed that it's "looking into" a console port, which may be what Bashiok was intending to say. Still, saying "Yup" when asked to confirm a definite console release is a bit more concrete than that.

Whether this is a case of bad communication or an actual confirmation is yet to be seen, but people are already running with the latter. That means it's most likely going to be the former.

I wouldnt mind giving the game a shot with a controller.Years of clicking at enemies in Diablo 2 have destroyed my fingers, and I dont think I could handle doing that again.

It's definitely happening, whether this was an intentional confirmation or not.

The only thing that stands in the way of a successful console port that I can see is the real money auction house thing. I'm not aware of any prior case of a company being able to run a miniature business like that in a console game, though I could very well be wrong.
Blizzard could easily not include that feature in the console version, but then there'd probably be outrage at the blatant political injustice.

To be fair, Blizzard has confirmed a lot of things that never actually happened.

Every time I get my hopes up that something like this would happen, I then remember Starcraft: Ghost.

Blizzard is pretty fickle about consoles, even though Diablo III would totally work given how much action its genre has seen in the last decade on consoles and handhelds.

@article: I hope this is true. Arpgs and controllers are a match made in heaven imo. Moving your character rather than waypointing them, feels better imo.

There's very good reason to have interest in a console port - it might not have all the bullshit the PC version will have.

Online-only connection for single player.
Auction houses.

Those are a couple things keeping me from wanting Diablo III right now, neither are needed.

Pretty sure World of Warcraft is confirmed for consoles. I saw an ad for it on the Xbox dashboard.

Confirming the obvious. I would be shocked had they not been making it for consoles, considering how easily the game would fit into console play and considering today's market.

I think it's a great move.

@Space Moose - I don't want it in the game at all on principle alone, same as the online-only connection. Buying the game and pretending to ignore them is the same as a direct endorsement.

They said at blizzcon, i think, that it wouldn't be a simple port, it would be built for the console if they did a console version, and they already had a team looking into console controls for it.

If I were really as hardpressed as every one else seems to be about playing Diablo 3 offline by myself then I would just pirate the damn game, I really don't think Blizz will care.

I think the relevant question is not so much: "Will there be a console port?"

As: "Will the console port be released concurrently with the PC version?"

Warcraft II was ported to the PlayStation and the Saturn 2 years after its PC release. Did anyone give two shits about that? Would anyone care about Diablo III on the console 2 years after its PC debut?

I'd rather have it on consoles tbh. I know more people I'd be able to play it with. That and it'd prob be more difficult to have that stupid sounding "gold for money" market.

Blizzard has been "looking" into a console port of D3 for about a year. I remember when the Dtoid Show mis-reported a headline saying "Diablo III on consoles!" when the video was actual "Diablo III on consoles?" No one actually knows when or if it will be coming out.

At this point all we know is that a team is at Blizzard HQ working on a possible console port for the future. It most likely won't launch anywhere near the PC version - it'll probably be after they've saturated the PC market.

It's coming to consoles, they've done literally everything BUT officially confirm it which is as much transparency as Blizzard is capable of.

They say a 'Diablo console project' - not a 'Diablo III console project'.

I remember Blizzard saying they wanted a Diablo on consoles, that it just probably wouldn't be Diablo III - so, like a spin-off game.

You mean Battle net? The thing you always had to use for any Diablo game?

If you're talking SP, who played Diablo SP? The only people I know who did it just used trainers and hacks for fun.

I'm sure this was officially confirmed (or strongly hinted at) months ago. I think I read it on gamesradar or something.

They definitely announced that they had people looking into it, so that may be what this is.

@Magnalon

I've played Diablo 2 SP without online. I don't see a point with playing with other people online for the single player portion of the game. I wanted to enjoy by myself, that's why I'm upset Blizzard didn't leave the option open for people like me, who play the game offline (I'm not much of a multiplayer fan).

It is Blizzard's game, and they can do what they want with it. I just hope the console version will allow online\offline option.

@Captain
See, I would just play it on Bnet, but play it single player - I used to do that often in D2. Just make a passworded game and play online by myself.

It seems like you're prepared to miss out on the game for potentially a few years because of principle (if you have an online connection). Personally, it doesn't bother me enough to wait for a possible console version, but everyone is different, and I hope they patch out the "always on" DRM for people like you in the future.
