Diablo III is making some system changes photo

We all want Diablo III to be done, and we all want to be playing it right now. Blizzard wants it to be done too, but they are taking the time to make it a good game. Just when we thought everything was getting finished up, Blizzard is making some drastic changes to a few of Diablo III's system mechanics.

Jay Wilson, the game director for Diablo III, said in a blog post on the Diablo III site that, "We want Diablo III to be the best game it can be when it launches. To get there, we're going to be iterating on designs we've had in place for a long time, making changes to systems you've spent a lot of time theorycrafting, and removing features you may have come to associate with the core of the experience. Our hope is that by embracing our iterative design process in which we question ourselves and our decisions, Diablo III won't just live up to our expectations, but will continue to do so a decade after it's released."

They are making some big changes to the skill and rune systems, but they aren't ready to let us know about those yet. What we do know, is that they are completely removing Scrolls of Identification, one of the quick slot buttons is becoming a dedicated potion button, the Mystic artisan is being removed, they are removing the Cauldron of Jordan and Nephalem Cube, Stone of Recall is being renamed to Town Portal and it's being placed right into the UI, Blacksmiths will be able to salvage items, character attributes are getting new benefits, and your stats will be shown right on your inventory screen.

The full post has details on each of these changes, and they really stress how much they want Diablo III to be an amazing game, and that they aren't afraid to take as much time as they need to finish it. It's nice that they are actually taking some feedback from the beta testing and making changes to the game.

If you are in the beta and you have an opinion on these changes, please let us know in the comments!

I wonder when we will get more information on Torchlight 2. This is good news though for the people buying Diablo III.

Good to see Joshua posting again.

I'm in the beta, and honestly some people that will claim "hardcore" will probably nerd rage, but in the end it's all minor changes. I read the full article and noticed nothing that will significantly change the way the game is played. That said, the beta really tries to capture the great nostalgic feelings, but I'm not sure it will. I think they changed too many of the classes to ease the transition of WoW players.

I feel like I know the layout of the warehouse and school better than most places I've lived in real life. This might be worth a trip down memory lane.

@CaptainHowdy I really hope that Torchlight 2 doesn't come out around the time of D3. I like both series and I really want them both to succeed, but that would be absolute suicide for Torchlight.

"...one of the quick slot buttons is becoming a dedicated potion button..."

INB4 "they're ruining the game for the sake of the damn console port!"

@Kurdoth - I believe the opposite might be true. The Torchlight audience is indie gamers, mostly, who tend to be pretty loyal folk. Chances are they'd scoop up a good passel of them, and they may even snag some angry DRM-hating folks. (I agree, however, that in any normal market Torchlight 2 wouldn't have a chance)

@Kurdoth

I agree with you. Torchlight isn't as big of a franchise yet, BUT it's getting there.

Sweet! I'm all for more changes, as long as it makes for a bigger and better experience. I'm so excited for this!

I'm starting to think this game will become a DNF. Too many changes in development, taking way too long, it's going to end up being one clusterfuck of a game. I will be shocked if it comes out in 2012. Ah well maybe Guild Wars 2 will be out before it.

Blizzard just got +10 awesome points.

If you log into b.net for diablo 2 TODAY, there's a lot of people online, and the game's been out for 11 years. If they continue with this attitude, it just might happen again for D3

Most of the changes aren't huge, aside from the skill stuff which we haven't seen yet anyway. I'm in the beta, but ashamed to say I haven't had much time with it. I will say I'm going to miss the cube--it's nice to have on hand at all times to break stuff down. What they seem to be missing is that there ARE times on the battlefield where you have downtime. Why take away what works?

Whoa, whoa, whoa. A Blizzard game is being delayed a bit? Stop the presses.

I know that's not the point of the article, but still. I don't even pay attention to Blizzard's release dates anymore. It'll come out when it comes out, and it will be amazing when it does. That's all I need to know, baby!

Whatever they have to do to make it the best. Let them. We've already waited this long; surely we can wait a little bit more. Besides, it gives me time to exercise my index finger.

A lot of those changes make it sound a lot more like Torchlight, not like that is a bad thing but we do only need one Torchlight 2.

Some of these changes don't bode well with me, I mean why do we need a potion button? Are we not smart enough to choose our own button for potions? Also why replace identify scrolls with just a spell? What made getting gear fun was waiting for a scroll to drop and then try my luck with the loot I'm about to receive, having it available at a short fixed interval kinda kills the importance of gear, and why does the Stone of Recall need to be called "Town Portal"? I know that's what it is, but do we really need names simplified because no-one apparently knows what the fuck a recall is?

Perhaps I'm overreacting, and I can't exactly not buy it now I'm leashed into that WoW sub deal but yeah, I feel like Blizzard are insulting my intelligence with these changes if anything, and that I need to be spoken to real slowly to understand what the game is.

Simply put, let go of my hand Blizzard, it feels like you're mentally molesting me!

If the Scroll of Identify is being replaced by an unlimited-use spell, why not just get rid of unidentified items altogether? All it does is add about one second's worth of additional work at this point...

Then again, it IS kinda fun...

I love how blizzards drm is exactly the same as ubisofts but no one bats an eye lid, plus they are just copying torchlight to the t.

Not nessesarily bad changes at all. D2 didn't have that much complexity at all originally outside of maybe screwing around with the Horodric Cube in vanilla and runes in Lord of Destruction. I do worry about the influence of WoW though.

I played in the beta and I think the changes are perfectly fine.

The gameplay felt good. It was classic Diablo with more modern enhancements. The monk is crazy fun and very powerful.

If this game was nothing more than a bridge to an MMO, I'd be with that. I don't mean an MMO like WoW, but more like the way Guild Wars is structured (towns where you meet people, everything outside town is the instance). That structure is basically Diablo 1 and 2, except the chat rooms are replaced with graphical towns.

Overall I think the changes bode well for the game. The attribute change (to Strength, Dexterity, and Intellect; from Attack, Precision, and Defense) should be a good one. Previously, if you found a sword with "+Attack" it would be equally good for a barbarian and a wizard, and not only did that not make sense to some people, it also made the items feel a bit too uniform. Now when you find a sword with +Dexterity you know it's a Monk weapon, etc.. Items will be more diverse and finding just the right equipment for your class will be more of a challenge.

I'm not sure how I feel about the removal of the Stone of Jordan and Nephalem Cube. I quite liked the feel of salvaging all of my drops on the go and never really having to return to town, but I can see how this paradigm worked against the "Diablo" notion of many drops being worthless and some drops being great.

Well it's official. Another 10 years before Diablo 4 is released. I was so hyped about D3... then along came Torchlight and now Kingdoms of Amalur. D3 is going to get pushed back again, and it will be the new Duke Nuke'em Forever joke. Torchlight 2 will come out before this ever does. Usually your first instinct is the best one, you asshats! Ship the damn thing already instead of tinkering with it.

Also, taking out Identify Scrolls = Massive Fail. It's one the thing I loved about Diablo and its Rogue/Moria/Nethack heritage.

My issue is (even if I didn't join in on it, because I'll never play the WoW again) that they promised this game as a reward for saying you'll pay for WoW for a full year. They honestly won't make fans happy if they're going to bring this game out at the very end of most peoples year long payment, and I dare say that they could forgo that completely and mess with it as long as a couple of more years if they really think something isn't right and needs changing.

Also, as much as I have fun Theorycrafting myself -fuck theorycrafters when all is said and done. If things didn't change then more things couldn't be "crafted" and they'd all be bored. They tend to drag down most games 90% of the time any way (yes, even I have this effect on myself. It pissed me off to no end that I get sucked up into it something -very duality of me.)

10 to 1 they'll take those features they're taking away and find a way to sell them to players in some way, anyway. Aside from that, all the stuff they're adding/removing sounds like stuff they should have thought to add or remove a few years ago.
